What a lovely place to vacation - both Anna Maria Island and this house! We knew nothing about the island before coming, and had never been to the Gulf Coast nor rented via vrbo.com, but are very glad we did. My husband and I came with the goal of doing very little and that's what we did. We each read two books by the pool, drank mimosas all day and grilled fish for dinner. The house is beautifully designed and furnished with understated luxury in the style of relaxed island living. You may not want to leave the house, but do! The tropical foliage around the pool makes it feel like a jungle oasis, and provides welcome spots of shade too. And you can't not love the beach, which right across the street. We walked it each night after dinner, enjoying the sunsets that seem to go on and on. It was fun to watch the dolphins frolic too. Our boys (15 and 17) spent most of their days in the gulf - like swimming in bathwater! Exhausted each night, they switched off between the second bedroom and an inflatable bed set up in the entertainment room - without complaint. The house provides plenty of privacy so two couples vacationing together would be very comfortable here also. Anna Maria Island is a quiet place, a world away from South Beach Miami, but you can find everything from restaurants to nightlife, fishing spots, water sports, sunset cruises, shopping and culture if you want to. I wish we had gone to the Beach Bistro - it's short walk up the beach and looked to be elegant and very popular. We went to The Sand Bar, known for grouper sandwiches and it was just ok. The free Anna Maria Island shuttle bus stops right across the street and runs early in the a.m. to late p.m. A must-see (if you can drag yourself away from the island) is the Ringling Museum complex in Sarasota. There are circus props, costumes, a vast miniature circus, John and Mable Ringling's 1926 dream home, and most impressive: JR's amazing art collection, valued as one of the top 20 in the US. Most noteworthy are the 17th Century Baroque period Old Master paintings. Not what you'd expect to see in Florida and a nice contrast to your days of paradise on Anna Maria Island.
Recommended for:Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
