Loads of recreation opportunities await you in the Big Horn River Valley and Bighorn National Recreation Area. Book now for your summer vacation!
*Bighorn Lake: Fish for Walleye, Lake Trout and other game fish, water ski and go tubing, sail and enjoy the views of the red rock canyon. The canyon provides lots of opportunities for photography. Rent a boat or pontoon at the marina for a day on the lake with your group.
*Yellowtail Dam: Drive up to the visitor center to learn about the construction of this hydroelectric facility that is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and how it has influenced the valley through irrigation, flood control, fishing and recreation.
*Bighorn River: Fly fish the world famous trout-rich waters, or hunt Canada geese and Mallard ducks from your drift boat.
*Hunt upland game birds, or ducks and Canada geese from your drift boat on the river.(with permission & licenses as required)
*History: Visit Little Bighorn Battlefield and the site of Fort C.F. Smith and its Hayfield Fight. There are also several other battlefield sites in the region, a well-planned day will allow you to visit them.
*In the region: Pompey's Pillar, the only remaining physical evidence of of the Clark's voyage down the Yellowstone, is located about 80 miles away. Billings and Sheridan (WY) are great shopping and theater destinations and are each about 90 miles.

Unlike the lodges in the area, this self-catering house offers you the ability to cook and eat what you want - when you want, come and go as you please and save money in the process. Your Bighorn Valley experience will be so much better then just renting a motel room!

This home is located just 2 miles from the "Bighorn" river fishing access (known as "13 mile" to the locals) and is 12 miles from Ft. Smith. It offers all of the creature comforts you're looking for. You'll be able to spend the day on the water and be "home" within minutes to a hot shower, ice cold beverage and grill that fish you just caught.

The warm water in the Bighorn river and many farmers' fields attracts many Canada geese during the winter, making the valley a prime area for waterfowl hunters and upland game birds trive in the many fields and pastures of the farms and ranches.

The home is situated on a large parcel of land, so you'll have lots of privacy, peace and quiet. The parking area is huge and there is plenty of room for your boats and pickup trucks.

The house has 2 bedrooms, and I have them set up with 2 full-size beds in each room. It will sleep 4 adults comfortably, with a maximum of 8. Very large groups will have restrictions of water use, and require special instructions so the septic system isn't overloaded.

There are only a few vacation rental properties in the area, and this is by far the best value in the valley. I understand times are tough right now but that shouldn't stop you from having an enjoyable vacation - so give me a call and let's negotiate a price that works for both of us.

We are continually working on the house and property to make it the best it can be for our customers. We did a lot of work on the exterior of the house in 2011, including new decks and a huge patio.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2009

I was raised on a ranch, about 20 miles from here, southwest of Lodge Grass. My parents raised sheep and then cattle, a few horses and four daughters! We worked hard and always said "there has to be an easier way to make a living"! Come to find out there are different ways to make a living, but I'm certain there are easier ones. My husband and I enjoy traveling and have rented properties similar to mine.

Why the Owner Chose Fort Smith

This property was my parent's retirement home. The house was designed by Mom and reflects the rancher in her. That generation spent a lot of time at the kitchen table, drinking coffee, visiting with neighbors and playing cards; so the kitchen/dining room is the centerpiece of the house. She also designed in a huge utility room and lots of storage. I believe all of this combines to make a perfect vacation home, plus I couldn't have hoped for a better location!

The Unique Benefits of this House

Some of the most enjoyable moments I have at this property are when I have the binoculars up to my eyes. There is always something to look at. There is a great horned owl that can be seen most mornings on a fence post in the coulee. We've seen many colorful songbirds flitting around eating bugs. The Bighorn mountains are beautiful at any time of day, but it's fun to watch storms come across from Wyoming. I've also seen quite a few white tail deer browsing in the pasture area and a coyote or two hunting along. (No big game hunting is allowed on the Crow Reservation, sorry.)

Amazing

Guest: Megan (Thornton, CO)
Date of Stay: 11/24/10 Review Submitted: 11/30/10

I had the pleasure of staying over Thanksgiving. It was great to have a place where we could bring family together and host a small dinner. We also had other family in town that were able to come and visit on Friday and we had a wonderful time sitting and just enjoying each other's company. The house had everything imaginable to be able to host a gathering. Everything from a platter, to a serving bowl and beautiful dishes, it was better than hosting it at my own house. You can tell from the vast assortment of items that much thought and planning went into the house. The bedrooms were very large and the sitting area was comfortable. It was nice to wake up every morning to a family of pheasants that were living just out from the house. We also woke up one morning to 2 does that were bedded down. Beautiful scenery and a nice secluded feel just added to the experience. My boys loved being able to play in the snow. I will definitely make the trip again! Thanks Barb for allowing me to have a beautiful Thanksgiving.

Owner response:I am happy that you and your family were able to enjoy the holiday, visit with our cuz-ins and your folks, and enjoy the country. Thanks for the great compliments, they mean a lot to me...I will buy a cookie sheet this week! Barb

Great Family Vacation Home

Guest: Vicky (Billings, Mt/Yellowstone County/United States)
Date of Stay: 07/29/10 Review Submitted: 08/03/10

My family enjoyed staying here immensely...besides drinks and food...everything you could possible need is provided to make your visit enjoyable...we especially love the solitude after a fun day on the lake boating and tubing...plus there is a huge parking area to put a truck towing a boat along with many other vehicles. The square footage of the house is so much larger than the top floor of our regular home...we were very impressed!!!! We can't wait to head back to the Bighorn area and stay at this vacation home again and do some great trout fishing as well....

Owner response:I have the most wonderful guests in the world! Thanks for your great comments and compliments - I appreciate them very much. Also, thanks for the suggestion that I needed big mixing bowls! I have bought a set of mixing bowls as well as a huge serving bowl and platter, even a griddle for use on that great middle burner on the range. Any suggestions are appreciated; I want my guests to never say "I wish I had a _____"! I am glad you had such a nice time with your family here and at the lake. Please tell your husband hello for us.

Peaceful place

Guest: cwp (Driftwood, TX)
Date of Stay: 07/19/10 Review Submitted: 07/28/10

This vacation rental was just as described, and more. It was very well equipped and clean, with lots of room to spread out. More, it was in a very peaceful and quiet location, with a lovely view of the Bighorn Mountains in the distance. It also had modern amenities, (satellite t.v. and wifi). The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well-equipped. Fishing, birding and boating are the local activities. We enjoyed the frontier museum in Hardin and the Little Bighorn National Monument. The owner was very eager to make our stay a good one - and it was.

Thanks Barbara for renting us your home! The location is great and very relaxing! We enjoyed the peace and fresh air. At night the white tail deer came up behind the house to eat the apples off the apple tree. We didn't do any cooking, (except coffee) however I would recommend preparing your own meals. The place has a great kitchen and the local dinning is ok at best. The fishing was great and close by. We would definitely recommend this place and would stay again.
