  I gave 4 stars b/c it wasn’t the best fit for us but it’s a wonderful property that would be ideal for many travelers. The entire area is beautiful and the lake is clear, clean & cool! Farmers markets occur on different days of the week around the lake so fresh food is plentiful. Our visit timed out with the annual crafts show, which was great. Hammondsport has excellent restaurants, too, (Village Tavern and UBI) and don’t forget the Artisan’s Bakery! There is a small grocery store in Hammondsport and a Tops Market in Penn Yan. Penn Yan has the best ice cream shop, too. Hammondsport’s ice cream parlor sells Perry’s brand and it’s closer but I thought the ice cream mediocre. The property was as described online and the photos are accurate. The key provided didn’t open the front door, which was inconvenient so if you get there after dark, have a flashlight. There are a lot of stairs (14 inside, not sure how many out back) so it was not ideal for my 87 year old mother. No bathroom on the first floor makes this house better for a younger family. Also, caution upstairs – the railing is low, which for an older person with balance issues could cause a little vertigo. This is an old duplex so we heard creaking floor boards and the sound of bedroom doors sticking as they are opened on the other side of the wall. The entire site is flat, a big plus in this area. The yard is huge and perfect for kids and pets. The lake is just past a stand of trees, which is fun but they do block the view. If you like to lounge, bring your own chair. Plastic chairs were provided but we had nothing comfy to stretch out on and the beach is shale. Initially, our experience was soured b/c the house had not been cleaned prior to our arrival. We took possession after the realtor’s office closed so by time we spoke with the property mgr we had already cleaned up the place. When the owner learned of this, he was appalled and apologetic but the mgmt company made satisfactory amends, which is good. Sh*t happens at times so how it’s dealt with counts. Remember to bring linens (sheets, pillow cases and towels), laundry detergent (washer/dryer in basement), bath soap, shampoo, TP and paper towels. For some reason, there were no adult-sized forks. However, had we read the provided paperwork more closely, we would have known to check with the unit next door as sometimes one group rents both sides and things migrate. One wish – a dishwasher so that everyone knows the dishes are clean.

  Owner response: Thank you for your input and tips for other renters. Yes, this is an older duplex and we have worked hard to make it as comfortable for our renters, and we upgrade components for each season and we pay particular attention to ensuring that the kitchen is well stocked – adult forks included. We will re-examine the possibility of a dishwasher, but want to reiterate we are restricted by space in the kitchen. We will replace the door locks; we had not realized they were as problematic as they apparently are. We will also replace the beach furniture next year and include some chaise lounges. As for the cleaning, you are correct that we were horrified - we have not had this experience before with our cleaning service and certainly expect it not to happen again. We hope that the extra two days free rental were appropriate compensation.

  The location (close to downtown Hammondsport, on Keuka Lake) is unquestionably great. The unit itself however underperforms: for 5-7 people (as listed), 1 bathroom is not enough - similar units rented by me in the past usually had an additional 1/2 bathroom. Kitchen is well stocked but no dishwasher? Also, washer/dryer would be great for emergencies. Mattresses and pillows are of the cheapest possible kind - creaky uncomfortable beds affect your sleep... These small things individually added up to a mediocre experience that should have been so much better.

  Recommended for: Pet owners, age 55+, sightseeing.

  Owner response: We take feedback from all our renters seriously. Each year, we continue to upgrade important parts of these rental units - furniture, kitchen stock, electronics. We have replaced all the previous mattresses in the past two years and check them each year but will certainly check them again. Feedback on the bedding is appreciated and will result in us prioritizing this for the next set of purchases. As for a dishwasher and washer/dryer, we’ve accurately indicated they are not available (due to space limitations). The same is true for the single bathroom. While we know we can’t please everyone, we like to believe we have many happy renters due to the volume of repeat customers we have each season. Update 11/11/12: We have purchased six adirondack chairs and 3 beach tables to improve the beach environment.

  I had the pleasure of stayig at the Keuka Lake Duplex this month (October 2010) and found that the property was even more charming and lovely than the site displayed. The purpose of my visit was to see, enjoy, hike in and mostly photograph the wonderful Fall color of the Finger Lakes Region. My expectations were exceeded. We were indeed lucky to have fabulous weather however the property, the waterfront and the charm of the cottage made the stay memorable. I would highly recommend this property....without reservation of any kind. I use VRBO at least 3-4 times per year throughout the US and you will not go wrong with this rental. Nearby attractons are numerous - depending on your interests. The Figer Lakes Wineries of course are awesome...and drives around several of the Finger Lakes provide a great way to relax and enjoy some outstanding scenery. Watkins Glen, Letchworth State Park, and of course the Mountour Falls Town and 'falls/park' of the same name - not to be missed. I really believe, depending on your personal tastes, just hanging out at the cottage and beach would make for a wonderful, laid back, low key vacation. The cottage is wonderfully furnished and since I planned to cook 100% of all meals 'in' I was wonderfully surprised to find a fully equipped kitchen with all needed pots/pans/utensils etc.

  The property here is absolutely spacious! Unlike some other properties along the Keuka shoreline, this duplex and lot gave us plenty of privacy and room for the kids to run. Comfortable, reasonable and clean. We would go back.
