Location: Greenbank, Whidbey Island, Puget Sound, Washington State, USA (1 1/2 hours from Seattle inlcuding 20 minute ferry ride)
Accommodations: House, 1 Bedroom, 1.25 Baths (Sleeps 1-2)
The new home, built in 2008, is extremely unique due to its proximity to the water, architectural design, custom craftsmanship and upscale furnishings. This beach lodge was originally a boat house in the 1960's and was built on a bulkhead just 20 feet from the water's edge. The current owners took the home down to the ground and meticulously re-built it in 2008.
The cozy main living area is a "great room" which opens on two sides to a wrap around deck overlooking Puget Sound's Honeymoon Bay. There is an outside entertainment area with gas BBQ, sink, refrigerator and plenty of seating. There is also a fire pit surrounded by sugar sand if you desire to roast hot dogs, marshmallows, make s'mores or just cuddle by the fire. The great room features a wood burning rock faced fireplace (gas starter) and hearth, comfortable seating and a kitchen island covered with a slab of carrera marble.
The kitchen features top of the line appliances (Wolf gas range, Subzero refrigerator and an Asko dishwasher). A custom wrought iron pot rack (forged and crafted by a local iron master/welder/artist) hangs over the kitchen island. The art on the walls truly compliment this retreat and are a collector's delight with original Indian photographs by Edward Curtis and original watercolors by Charles Reid and Nelson Boren. A tiled powder room with heated floors is also located on this level.
A custom made stick railing adorns the stairway ascending to the second story. As one moves into the large upstairs bedroom you feel as if you are on a cruise ship due to the view out the walls of glass (Nana doors) onto Puget Sound. From this room you only see water in front of you....the view is spectacular! This spacious room contains a king size bed and two comfortable chairs with ottomans. The upstairs gas fireplace warms you on those chilly winter nights. The linens and down pillows are luxuriously soft. Adjacent to the bedroom is the tiled bathroom with heated floors, shower and washer and dryer for your convenience.
Within the lodge/beach house are two flatscreen TV's with satellite service, a CD player AM/FM radio and an Ipod docking station. There are inside and outside speakers on both levels with individual volume controls. Wifi is available so you can still keep in touch with the outside world.
In addition to this incredible setting is the "beach". This is not a smooth sandy beach but a beach inhabited by clams, mussels and oysters. Does seafood interest you? If the tide is low, and you desire to venture out, you will have the opportunity to forage for seafood for lunch or an evening meal. If you happen to be vacationing during crabbing season - this may be another opportunity to try dungeness crab. The property owners will be happy to guide, instruct and aid you if any or all of the above interests you. The owners will gladly provide you with the crab traps and instruct you on baiting the traps to insure a catch for dinner!
If you want a true island getaway this is it. Relax and read a book, listen/watch the resident eagles soar, beachcomb, forage for dinner or just catch up with life.
In addition there is a charming cottage on the property that is available for rent and it sleeps two. No cooking facilities available in the cottage.
