This little piece of heaven is nestled in between the Gulf of Mexico and Little Sarasota Bay. In your backyard there are two brand new piers with boat slips shooting out into Little Sarasota Bay. As you’re walking out on these piers, keep an eye out for “Nicholas” the dolphin. We named him that because he has a nick in his dorsal fin. You may find him following you up and down the pier! At high tide the fishing can be great from the piers. Shrimp is the bait of choice, and can be found just before crossing back over the South bridge at CB’s Bait & Tackle Shop. This is also a great place for boat rentals, fishing poles, t-shirts and sweatshirts. Also in your backyard on the bayside you’ll find a beautiful pool, as well as a grill area with picnic tables.

It’s just a short walk across the street to your private beach access to Turtle Beach on the Gulf, where you’ll find the most incredible shells I’ve ever seen! There is a cabana waiting for you on that side loaded with beach chairs and umbrellas, as well as some other goodies, so you don’t have to carry everything. Just bring your cooler, sunscreen, towels, a good book and sunglasses (and don’t forget the Cabana key)! Take a ride up to Anna’s Deli before you go (just past 7-11 on the right), and pick up wonderful sandwiches for a beach picnic. The “Surfer” is our favorite. Beware, as the sandwiches are big and loaded! They’re perfect to split.

You’ll also find another pool, as well as another grill, on the Gulf side. There is a bathroom on this side about halfway down the cabanas, so you don’t have to walk (or run!) all the way back home from the beach. You can also find good fishing on the Gulf side depending on the tide. An hour before high tide to an hour after is ideal.

There are a few other beaches in the area quite worthy of mention. About 3 miles north is Siesta Key Public Beach, which has won awards for “the whitest and finest sand in the world”, and has been featured on the Travel Channel as “Best Sand Beach in America”. It’s like walking on baby powder! The shells are not nearly as good as Turtle Beach, but if you keep your eye out you’re likely to find sand dollars. They celebrate sunset here every night, but on Sundays at sunset you can witness the “Drum Circle” (if you can find parking!). This kind of resembles a Key West sunset celebration.

Crescent Beach, just across from Captain Curt’s, has the same white sand but not as many people, and also not as much parking. And last, but certainly not least (and one of our favorites!) is Casperson Beach, or “Shark’s Tooth Beach” in Venice. This is about 15 miles south, but worth the trip! You can wade in the surf and sift through the sand and find fossilized sharks teeth millions of years old by the dozens! Right by Casperson Beach you’ll find Sharky’s on the Pier, a really neat Tiki Bar and Restaurant at the beginning of the fishing pier right on the beach.

When you get bored with all of the beaching (or just sunburned!), head on into Siesta Key Village for some oysters and beer. Or, for a day of very nice outdoor shopping and dining, head over the North bridge into St. Armand’s Circle. This is a really pretty drive, and the shops are wonderful (and plentiful!). The “Cork & Bottle” has the best steamed clams that I’ve ever had!

Heaven forbid that it rains, but if it does, you could always check out the Ringling Museum. We haven’t been there yet, but hear it’s incredible and worth the trip. Or just rent a bike and explore Midnight Pass. There are some really beautiful properties that are just too hard to see from the car!

When you don’t feel like cooking and you don’t feel like driving, walk out the door, turn left at the road, and walk about 250 steps (2 tenths of a mile!) to Turtle’s Restaurant, where you can sit on the water and take in incredible views while enjoying very good food and drink (lunch and dinner) at very reasonable prices. The crab bisque is wonderful! Tell the bartenders Jennifer & Andy sent you! We ate there 6 nights a week while we were remodeling. They make us wash our own dishes now! They also have a good Sunday Brunch. Turtle’s Pub (right beside the restaurant) is also a local favorite for burgers and sandwiches, but is not affiliated with the restaurant.

Our next closest favorite would be Clayton’s Siesta Grille. For this you would want to drive back up and take a right just past Captain Curt’s. It’s up a little on the right. It’s a little pricier than Turtle’s, but VERY good food and a nice atmosphere (indoor and outdoor dining). These are just a few of our favorites. I could go on all day, but I guess that’s what they make those tourist books for!
