You will find the Birch Leaf Guest House at the head of Pine Valley in Northeast Oregon near Halfway. We are quietly tucked away between Oregon's Eagle Cap Wilderness and Idaho's Hell's Canyon at the south end of the Wallowa Mountains. The Guest House is the perfect place to spend the night before rafting down Hells Canyon, or to stop over on your back country tour of the Wallowas from Halfway to Joseph, or whatever adventure brings you to this amazing outdoor paradise.
The Birch Leaf Guest House is a beautiful farm house originally built in 1906, recently updated with all of our modern amenities. The main Guest House sleeps up to 11 people with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. For parties of more than 8 guests, we offer access to two more bedrooms and another 1/2 bath. We have a wonderful dining room and library area, separate TV room, two covered wrap around decks, and a kitchen stocked with cooking staples ready for your use.
Visiting here you can get away from it all and truly enjoy the great outdoors. Just 5 miles north, Red Mountain climbs to an impressive 9,500 feet and forms the southern end of the Wallowa Mountains and Eagle Cap Wilderness. 15 miles east, on the Idaho border, lays the Snake River and 6,000 foot-deep Hell's Canyon. Summer activities include white-water rafting, fishing and hunting, llama trekking, hiking and backpacking. During the summer and fall we also have extensive flower gardens, fruit orchards, and a swimming pond at the back of the property. During the winter, enjoy snowmobile trail riding access directly from the property.
At an elevation of 3200 feet, we enjoy a sunny growing season, spectacular fall colors, and incredible powder snow in the winter. Enjoy sitting on the up or downstairs deck on our wrap around porches, gazing at the amazing views or taking in the clear starlit sky with nothing but the sound of crickets and the breeze rustling through the nearby trees.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2005
Andrew & Katy Nachman live year around in McCall, Idaho and own and operate an adventure travel business called Northwest Voyageurs. They lead whitewater rafting, trekking, climbing and other adventures in Idaho, Oregon and around the world. When not in McCall, they can be found in Halfway at the Birch Leaf, piddling in the orchard or hiking in the Wallowa Mountains behind the farm.
Why the Owner Chose Halfway
Andrew had stayed at the Birch Leaf Guest House several times in the previous few years, hosting clients the night before launching a Hells Canyon whitewater trip. When the property went up for sale, he thought he needed to show his fiancee Katy the place. As they drove from Baker City, OR towards Halfway, Katy thought "Why does he want to live in the middle of the desert?" And then they came over the ridge line and there were these beautiful snowcapped peaks rising in the background, with this beautiful verdant green valley at its base. "It's like a little Switzerland", Katy said. As the rest was history. The valley and our farm is peaceful, relaxing, rejuvenating and far away from anything but close to many outdoor pursuits like hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, berry and mushroom picking, hunting etc. We feel in love with the place on our first visit, and someday hope to move here permanently.
The Unique Benefits of this house
Here are just a few things we do while here:
Picking fruit in the orchard
Hiking in the Wallowas
Snowmobiling
Fishing in Brownlee and Oxbow reservoir
Hot springs
Rafting Hells Canyon
Watching amazing sunsets from the porch
Doing absolutely nothing

Great place to stay before a Hells Canyon rafting trip

Our company has used the Birch Leaf several times as our meeting place for guests the night before our Hells Canyon launch trips. Our guests have always loved their time at the Birch Leaf. It's a charming farm house and set in a spectacular spot with views of the mountains and valley. Butch, the caretaker, is a great guy. Great with our guests and sharing his knowledge of the area. All of us guides look forward to these trips and the chance to stay there for a night.
