“A beautiful, peaceful property”
Geckoes is lovely, the property is surrounded by rain forest, with the most immaculate grounds. The house is glorious & the pool is just an added bonus. Tom and Zoe are so nice, nothing is too much trouble for them as they welcome you to visit them at their house any time. Their lovely Rhodesian ridgebacks are great at alerting them you are home. On our first night at Geckoes there was a 'storm' that came through and we spent most of the evening wandering around the garden looking for frogs & insect life & Golden Orb spiders - which we found in abundance. The howler monkey's wake you in the morning & the toucans arrive, stopping as they do so to grab some food before moving on to another property. Tom & Zoe helped us to arrange a day trip to Gandoca Lagoon with the most fabulous Junior. This is well worth doing. Overall: we just loved it at Geckoes! When I first made contact with Tom, some 6 months before our trip, he gave me so much information, I felt at this point Geckoes was going to be a wonderful stay and it was!

I am already trying to get back there!
The Geckoes Lodge is made of of two different rental properties. We stayed at the one bedroom Casa Del Bosque for four wonderful nights.. It is perfect for a couple. The living area and kitchen are totally open to the surrounding forest. At night you can hear all the different animals speaking to each other. It is almost like a sound machine turned to high, it's that perfect. We saw many hummingbirds and at night, a bat. A couple evenings we ate in. There is everything you need to cook nice meals if that is what you want to do. We had quite an experience getting to the house. A large tree had fallen across the road. Tom and Zoe had to meet us at the tree, help us climb over, and then brought us the rest of the way to the house. There is a book at the house that tells all about the area. The restaurant guide was spot on and so was the map and description of the closest beaches. The owners provide you with a very easy to use cell phone. There are many numbers already programmed in which made it so simple to call local places. We used Taxi Renee. He was wonderful. He was always ready, willing and able to drive us anywhere we wanted to go. We just told him what time to be back and he was there. We did not see any monkeys but we could hear them at certain times of the day. There are some big bugs around but nothing is going to hurt you. The house provides two beach towels and a blanket. Our favorite beach was Punta Uva due to the soft sand and surf. The plunge pool is very refreshing. It has two reclining lawn chairs to sit out next to the pool. It's just the right size and depth for two grown people. The bedroom is very large. The bed has netting around it but you really don't need it. The couple that live on the property, Jose and Tita come in once a day to freshen things up. I would like to come back and visit again. We really enjoyed our stay. It was so relaxing. Tom and Zoe are there is you need them but you never feel like there is anyone around. It's very private. We toured the Jaguar Center, it is a must do! We also had dinner at Malbec. You can read my review of that here on TripAdvisor. Tom and Zoe, be prepared to host us again!

Where to begin? My husband and I were looking for a honeymoon that struck a balance among luxury, relaxation, adventure, and excitement. We can't remember how exactly we got to Geckoes' website, but it must have been fate as we couldn't imagine a honeymoon anywhere else. When we arrived at Geckoes Tom greeted us with a smile as Charlie and Fred (their Norwegian Ridgeback dogs) gave us their best impression of guard dogs. Together our welcoming committee guided us through the winding paths to our future home for the week at La Casa del Bosque. We were not disappointed with our accommodations to say the least - in fact, it was romantic, secluded, and breathtakingly beautiful. Our adventure had begun.. With a fully equipped kitchen and grill, we planned to prepare a majority of our meals there- this was not only fun but also a good money-saver for us and allowed us to splurge on occasional dinners/lunches out. We spent the rest of the night enjoying our new paradise - a plunge pool just to ourselves (this is a gem - more like a mini-pool that is private, clean and felt amazingly good in hot tropical weather), hammocks to read in, chairs to lounge in, and an endless supply of new animal noises and sightings to keep us busy for hours. We stayed at both La Casa de Bosque and La Casa de Bromelia at Geckoes: Both are beautiful. La Casa de Bosque is more secluded and intimate- probably the choice for honeymooners like us . La Casa Bromelia is larger, with a bigger kitchen and set on the side of a hill so you feel as though you are among the trees. Both houses enable you to feel immersed in a tropical rainforest but with all the high end luxuries of any 5 star hotel. There was always a filled bottled water reservoir, as well as a gas stove and blender to whip up any frozen smoothies you could want. The staff at Geckoes was amazing - Tito and Jose do an incredibly good job cleaning the living spaces and landscape daily. Tom and Zoe are two of the most welcoming and down to earth people we have ever met- in fact visiting with them was a highlight of our trip. They make themselves available all the time, anytime, for any questions you may have or situations you find yourself in. They also provided us with a pre-programmed cell phone for the week with any numbers we needed. Bottom Line: Geckoes is luxury in the rain forest. Tom and Zoe helped create an experience we loved. It was a once in a lifetime trip- although we plan to be back:)

Excellent honeymoon spot after our giant car crash
On our way from the San Jose airport to Geckoes Lodge, our shuttle driver had a head-on collision with a cargo van. We all walked away fine from the accident, but my new husband and I were bruised and shaken by the time we arrived at Geckoes many hours later. The hosts, Tom and Zoe, went shopping for us and had a refrigerator stocked with groceries by the time we arrived. They greeted us at the gate and had our rooms prepared. This just goes to show the attention to detail and caring they have for their guests. The next morning, we awoke to the chorus of howler monkeys, which was our daily wake up call while there. Each of the houses on the property is secluded and private, which makes for perfect honeymoon experience! The beach is about a mile walk. One nice perk is that the lodge provides a local cell phone to use while there, with helpful numbers pre programmed. Rene the local taxi driver was very prompt and courteous. We would absolutely go back here and recommend this place highly to anyone who asks.

Amazing Honeymoon!Guest comment entered by owner
My husband and I wanted an amazing Romantic honeymoon with a little added adventure. A place where we could spend the day just the two of us relaxing in a beautiful setting or go out and have a fun adventure. Geckoes Lodge in Costa Rica was exactly that!! First off we have to start with Tom and Zoe, the owners. They were amazing from the very beginning. We talked to them through email to plan the honeymoon. They answered all our questions and helped us set up the whole trip. When we arrived there Zoe greeted us (Tom was away) and she was just as friendly as expected. We arrived after dark and she gave us a quick introduction to the house, the phone they give you with multiple helpful numbers, and a binder they put together about the area. So wonderful! We met Tom a day or two later. They invited us over for a visit and drinks. It was very nice. They truly are the nicest people and we really enjoyed getting to know them! The House we stayed at was Casa Del Bosque. They have two different houses, one is for a group of people. Casa del Bosque is great for a couple. It has one bedroom, it's secluded and surrounded by the rainforest. Very luxurious and romantic. The pictures on their website don't do it justice. The kitchen and living area are completely outside and their is a wonderful plunge pool. It's a great place to relax and spend some quit time together, and you never know what you are gunna see in the jungle while you're out there. We enjoyed all the butterflies and hummingbirds, saw a few toucans in the trees and of course there's always the Howler monkeys. We always heard them in the trees and saw them almost everyday! There is also a path to walk through the jungle!! Jose and Tita take care of the grounds and the homes. They do a wonderful job, they come everyday to clean and especially make sure there are no bugs ( wink, wink). They really help to make your stay extremely enjoyable!! Costa Rica in general was amazing. The country is beautiful. The beaches were very close to Geckoes lodge. We went in May which is the off season there. We hardly saw other people on the beaches. The locals were great. We were very close to Puerto Viejo. Travel was very easy. We rented bikes to get around during the day and at night we used the phone Tom and Zoe gave us to call a taxi. Thank you so much Tom and Zoe for the unforgettable honeymoon!!

Great Experience!Guest comment entered by owner
We recently enjoyed almost ten days in Casa del Bosque, one of Tom and Zoe's two beautiful guest houses. As everyone has said before us, their warm hospitality, helpful tips, and kind gestures made us feel very comfortable and cared for. They have created a wonderfully private paradise in the rainforest. You could not ask for better accommodations and you certainly can't beat the magnificent setting. We will definitely recommend Geckoes to others in the future. Thank you Tom, Zoe, Tita, and Jose!

Very Difficult to Leave...Guest comment entered by owner
Very Difficult to Leave...
...and I don't mean at the end of our stay, it was difficult to leave the house each morning! My 13 year old and I had a rare mother/son escape to Costa Rica, and taking advice from all the emphatic reviewers here, chose Geckoes Lodge. It exceeded our expectations, and those were already high! Everything everyone has already said here is true. The setting is extraordinary, (toucans flying past, howler monkeys frolicking in the trees above, hummingbirds flitting past exotic blooms), the hosts warm, welcoming, thoughtful and generous, the location perfect for exploring this beautiful part of Costa Rica. It is a ridiculously romantic place, rather wasted on the two of us, but we had excellent fun snorkelling and zip-lining and hiking and riding bikes, and I'll just have to return with my partner! Thank you, Tom and Zoe, for creating such a beautiful refuge from a seemingly interminable New York Winter!

Pure Romance!Guest comment entered by owner
We finished our stay at Casa del Bosque. I still vision myself there, lying in the hammock, doing absolutely nothing except enjoying the noises of the jungle and the rainforest. Each of the houses had games provided, which we hadn't thought to bring anything with us, so it worked quite well. The best part, was not having to do anything. Tom and Zoe thought of absolutely everything to make our stay as relaxing, romantic, and as enjoyable as they could. Jose takes such good care of the grounds, and his wife, Tita, kept the Casa's in immaculate condition. Overall, while this was my first out of country experience, I have traveled to many places in the US. Staying at Geckoes is Pure Romance and worth every penny and every minute of your time. We cannot wait to return! Pura Vida

The Magic of the RainforestGuest comment entered by owner
The Magic of the Rainforest
Barefoot Luxury they say! A secluded hideaway they say! It is all this and more!!! Firstly the owners Tom and Zoe are the most hospitable couple we have ever met. After spending a couple of hours chatting we had a great knowledge of the area, and felt we had met great new friends. The lodges themselves are beautiful, with the most comfortable beds a truly secluded hideaway, there is a welcome pack of fruit and nibbles in your lodge which was greatly appreciated. In fact there are a few surprises and touches that Tom and Zoe do not advertise, but make your stay feel very special. Their are some great restaurants in the area, el refugio being our favourite, but breakfast at banana and chocolate should not be missed. We will definitely be returning to Geckoes, it is everything they say it is and a lot more.

Private, Perfect Paradise!Guest comment entered by owner
Private, Perfect Paradise!
We stayed at Geckoes in Jan 2013 as the conclusion to our 3 week honeymoon touring Costa Rica. My husband booked the place, and I will be honest; as we drove away from the palm lined beaches and into the forest my heart dropped... Would this be an anticlimax to an incredible 3 weeks...? Well, I am big enough and ugly enough to admit that I should've trusted him (and the reviews on Tripadvisor he'd used as research)! Geckoes was a fabulous secluded island of luxury tucked away in its own private jungle. The house itself is a fabulously indulgent triumph of dark wood, shutter doors and canopied beds...whilst Zoe & Tom's attention to detail and little surprises (won't ruin them for you) made this place feel truly special. Sitting by the plunge pool watching Toucans play in the trees, fishing a tree frog out of the plunge pool and feeling very intrepid with our first Costa Rican BBQ were all highlights of our stay. Couple this with Zoe & Tom - the two most hospitable people around - and you have a fabulous destination well worth the stop off. We kept popping in "for 5 mins" to mine them for information about the local area and then wandering out 2 hours later, hopelessly late for dinner reservations and having debated life, love and the universe. I can't wait til we go back!

About the owner: Geckoes is owned and managed by husband and wife team, Tom Keller & Zoë Courtier. With backgrounds in hospitality education and tourism and extensive international experience we decided it was time for a new adventure. Ably assisted by caretaker team Jose & Tita, Geckoes Lodge is the culmination of a two year project to create private and luxurious holiday accommodation whilst maintaining the beauty and minimising the impact on the surrounding rainforest and its inhabitants. Geckoes was so named to symbolise the symbiotic relationship possible between wildlife and humans. With a commitment to Sustainable development, eco-friendly practices and environmental consciousness our operating practices and the houses have been designed to fit the landscape rather than vice versa. We look forward to welcoming you at Geckoes and helping to make your holiday unforgettable.
Why the Owner Chose Cocles:
The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is for us the perfect place to be. Here we have everything we could wish for; a spectacular property, beautiful nature, a warm sea and a fantastic climate. What we don't have is high-rise buildings and big developments but plenty of individually owned restaurants and businesses with a great mix of nationalities. At Geckoes you can feel 'away from it all' yet be within easy reach of all amenities. It's a place to unwind, relax, enjoy the spectacular rainforest surroundings and wildlife.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Being just 1km off the main road, we can feel as if we are miles from anywhere but in fact we are within easy reach of everything. World-class beaches and marvellous and affordable restaurants are just around the corner. This is what most people would consider living the Caribbean life but we have the rainforest as well! With the rainforest comes the wildlife and we regularly see Howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and the magnificent Blue Morpho butterflies from our veranda. Geckoes is a gorgeous piece of rainforest that we are lucky enough to be able to call Home. We look forward to sharing this remarkable place with you.
