VRBO Bear stayed here:
If you’re planning the perfect Costa Rican vacation look no further than Geckoe’s Lodge, Casa Bromelia. This bear couple on their honeymoon was spoiled with luxury accommodations in a private rainforest paradise. We were greeted by our friendly hosts Tom and Zoe, who have spared no expense in creating an eco-friendly abode with views that will take your breath away. A thoughtful fruit basket with Costa Rican snacks and a delicious pineapple along with a bottle of champagne were set out to celebrate the occasion.
The impeccable attention to detail makes Casa Bromelia a true home away from home. A fully stocked kitchen, cell phone with necessary numbers, helpful travel guides and daily cleaning ensured we had a relaxing vacation. The hammocks also helped, it was amazing to see toucans and the beautiful blue morpho butterfly from the front porch. This beautiful, large, 2 bedroom home has an open concept layout that provides rainforest views at almost every turn. The master bedroom is absolutely perfect with a very comfortable bed, seating and a spacious bathroom.
The natural light peering through the windows started off our day as we explored the many beaches of the Caribbean coast, visited the Jaguar Rescue Center (baby howler monkeys crawling all over us!),a relaxing couples massage at Indulgence spa and shopped in Puerto Viejo. For a truly unforgettable meal visit La Pecora Nera which is a scenic little walk from the property. We enjoyed a perfectly seasoned and seasonal tasting menu in a romantic open air setting. After our active days we looked forward to arriving at the secluded oasis and taking a dip in the plunge pool.
There is so much to do, see and enjoy in this area that 6 days wasn’t enough and we’re already planning a return trip! I haven’t hesitated in recommending this home to my family and friends. This was the most memorable and relaxing vacation these bears could have ever hoped for.

“Lived up to high expectations!”
My wife, two children and I stay at Geckoes Lodge and loved our experience. The house is beautiful, the pool was refreshing and the jungle surrounding us reminded us everyday how lucky we were. My wife and children travelled in Costa Rica for a month and joined them the last week at Geckoes. I looked at around 200 places before finally choosing Tom and Zoe's wonderful place. Initially, I was worried it was "too romantic" for our family. It was romantic but worked well for our entire family. We rented a golf cart (Tom and Zoe organized it for us) and travelled all around the coast and enjoyed the beaches and fantastic food in the area. We shopped a little in Puerto Viejo (2 KM away) and travelled down to the Jaguar Rescue Center. (1 KM). The place was private, had a great kitchen and a grill next to the pool. We loved using the hammocks and reading while listening to the monkey's in the morning (sometimes a little too early for me :). If you are thinking about this area of Costa Rica, this is your place. I looked high and low before I booked and while I was there. Our family loved the place and would visit again in a heartbeat.

We stayed at both La Casa de Bosque and La Casa de Bromelia at Geckoes: Both are beautiful. La Casa de Bosque is more secluded and intimate- probably the choice for honeymooners like us . La Casa Bromelia is larger, with a bigger kitchen and set on the side of a hill so you feel as though you are among the trees. Both houses enable you to feel immersed in a tropical rainforest but with all the high end luxuries of any 5 star hotel. There was always a filled bottled water reservoir, as well as a gas stove and blender to whip up any frozen smoothies you could want. The staff at Geckoes was amazing - Tito and Jose do an incredibly good job cleaning the living spaces and landscape daily. Tom and Zoe are two of the most welcoming and down to earth people we have ever met- in fact visiting with them was a highlight of our trip. They make themselves available all the time, anytime, for any questions you may have or situations you find yourself in. They also provided us with a pre-programmed cell phone for the week with any numbers we needed (Taxis, restaurants, guides, spa, etc). Although we spent all of our evenings at Geckoes lodge enjoying the amenities and seclusion we were active during the day and rented bikes to explore various beaches, Puerto Viejo, go on a chocolate tour, waterfall tour, a yoga class, surf lessons, etc. Bottom Line: Geckoes is luxury in the rain forest. Tom and Zoe helped create an experience we loved. It was a once in a lifetime trip- although we plan to be back:) We now know the meaning of the phrase Pura Vida..because we lived it!

We spent 9 nights in Casa Bromelia and absolutely loved it! The entire property is beautiful. It was really incredible sharing the rainforest with howler monkeys and toucans. The owners, Tom and Zoe are great people. They were amazing hosts and really made every effort to make our stay a memorable one. Thanks to Jose and Tita who did a great job keeping the place clean. An awesome place in a really beautiful part of the country.

Can we go back... NOW?!
We got back to our hometown, Chicago, last night at around midnight. Having just spent 8 days in Puerto Viejo, I thought I'd be glad to be back in my own bed. However, I found myself unable to sleep; I was missing the sounds of the rainforest and the fresh air; I was missing Geckoes Lodge. Don't get me wrong, Puerto Viejo is an amazingly charming seaside town, and I'm so glad that we happened there. However, much of the success of our vacation is owed to Geckoes Lodge. The location, the privacy, the peace, and the hospitality all contributed to our having one of our most memorable travel experiences to date. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that I can't imagine staying anywhere other than Geckoes. I had high expectations of the property. Geckoes blew our expectations away. As cliché as it sounds, photos just do not do this place justice. We stayed in Casa Bromelia, the two-bedroom house. Not withstanding that fact that this house is in the middle of the rainforest--literally!--the design of the home is remarkable. There was so much attention paid to detail. Fresh flowers, decorative touches, every kitchen utensil you could possible want, rain showers, views of the rainforest from every window, the perfect-sized dip pool... I could go on. All of these things added up to a beautiful, comfortable, and welcoming home. The location of the property is also very special. Yes--it is a bit removed from the beaches, but that is exactly what makes it so special. You are close enough to access all of the restaurants, activities, and natural wonders you want, but you feel like you're in your own private sanctuary. There's no one walking past, no loud cards or motor bikes riding by. The land on which Geckoes is situated is a true oasis. And of course, the four people on the property--Tom, Zoe, Jose, Tita--all made it that much more special. Tom and Zoe are the best kind of hosts--welcoming, warm, and there whenever you need them, but never too intrusive. Jose and Tita do an impeccable job keeping the homes and the grounds clean. In fact, you will forget that you're staying in an open-air house in the middle of the rainforest (until you hear the frogs, that is). I can't say it enough: run, don't walk, to Geckoes Lodge. Puerto Viejo is a perfect vacation location, but you're vacation would be just as perfect if you never walked outside the Geckoes gate. That's how special this place is.

“Another Superb Stay!”
This is the 2nd time I've reviewed Geckoes Lodge, the first was after a 6 day stay in April 2011. That initial stay was so good, so enjoyable, so relaxing that we decided to break what for us is a golden rule - never stay in the same place twice. But, there is a first time for everything and the experience of staying at Geckoes Lodge is so incredible it not only induced us to break our golden rule it then managed to deliver a holiday worthy of the decision. I genuinely believe if you are planning to holiday in the area around Geckoes that, not only is there no better place to stay, a stay here is actually going to add an extra dimension and enjoyment to any trip to Costa Rica. Bold claim - let me back it up. Firstly the owners, Tom and Zoe. If there are two nicer, more considerate, more customer focussed individuals running a holiday rental business anywhere on the planet I would be surprised. Secondly the house. We stayed at Case Bromelia, both times. What can I say about this house that has not already been said? Well, it's close to perfection. At Case Bromelia you live in the forest, indoors but outdoors, and yet in 12 days there we didn't suffer a single insect bite or have to fend off anything worse than the occasional ant. The design of the house is such that it's brilliantly ventilated, beautifully lit and where you want it, completely protected from the elements. The bedrooms are completely open in the day and completely shuttered off, screened and safe in the night. We loved it so much there we more than once just spent the whole day in the house and gardens and pool. Thirdly the attention to detail. The property is cared for day to day by Tom and Zoe of course but also by Jose and Tita who keep the place spotless. And it has everything, a coffee machine, on tap pure water, a blender for your morning smoothie, enough crockery and cutlery to keep a family of four going with ease, a huge fridge freezer and that's just the kitchen. The living area is well provisioned with lights, fans and power points. A dining table and chairs complements a living area with comfy wicker sofa and chairs. Walk in showers, tons of hot water and good pressure and gorgeous bedrooms decorated with freshly cut flowers and cushions make it so obvious that Tom and Zoe are on a mission. The word paradise is over used and of course it's not paradise in Cocles, but it's close, damn close.

“Magical & Mystical Jungle Experience”Guest comment entered by owner
“Magical & Mystical Jungle Experience”
I have to begin by saying, nobody could write a review that could possible describe this special jungle retreat and the feeling you have while standing and looking in amazement at the perfectly situated Bali styled homes in this dense, beautiful, magically mystical, piece of paradise. Wildlife was something we have never experienced. It was incredible waking up to howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and many others right outside your window. We got up early every morning with coffee to sit and listen and watch as the jungle came alive. Tom and Zoe are the perfect couple and hosts. We were celebrating our anniversary, so I emailed Tom and asked if he could put a card out to surprise my husband. They went well beyond our expectations. We arrived to a plate of fresh strawberries, assortment of chocloates & nuts and champagne...and they acted like it was no big deal...To us, it was something that made our day more memorable and unforgettable. This was truly an experience of a lifetime, not only the location in the middle of the jungle but only ten minutes from the beach by golf cart. The owners could not have been more welcoming, just like old freinds from the start. We really enjoyed talking to them, they are very knowledgable on local area and activites. Their accents and world traveling made the conversation so interesting that we could sit and talk for hours over wine, which we did, and hope to do on our return visit. Pueto Veijo was really laidback, island vibe, safe, close, great shops, and incredible food. Matter of fact, Tom and Zoe made several restaurant suggestions and these are the ones we tried and you wont be disappointed. El Refugo, Jungle Love, Malbec, El Paso, Todo "everything is possible". And we cannot forget the hospitality of Jose and Tica, who kept the place immaculate and well supplied. Junior, who picked us up at the airport and was a blast to hang with. Stopped at several "local" places for authenitic food and drinks, along with a history lesson on the way...very interesting. We have been to most of the USVI, BVI, Aruba, Jamacia, St.Lucia, Bahamas, Mexico and this was by far the best vacation for hospitality, location, safety, diversity, culture, weather, wildlife, scenery, mountains, jungle, rainforest, beaches. Most importantly Geckoes, when you read Barefoot Luxury its true, thats the closest any one could come to describing this Magical & Mystical place. To be more accurate, I should say Expereince.

Best Vacation EVER! (Honeymoon)
Of all the places we stayed in Costa Rica, coast-to-coast, Geckoes was by far the most engaging, interesting and memorable! It truly was "barefoot luxury" - a laid back, jungle hut surrounded (and sometimes infiltrated) by wildlife. Tom and Zoe are amazing hosts - there when you need them, full of insight and and information and recommendations, and not there when you don't need them! It's the perfect balance of hospitality and privacy! AND THEN THERE ARE THE BEACHES.... oh, the beaches!

Casa Bromelia. Patrick, Sheila and Ria. 'Fantastic hideaway in Paradise.' Date of stay October, 2009 The rooms are luxurious, the setting amazing and the hospitality and service faultless at this beautiful private guest lodge in Puerto Viejo. Zoe and Tom took great care of us organising trips and helping us to get around and discover the beaches and rain forests in the area (renting a car or golfcart is recommended to get around easily). We hiked in the rainforest, saw many exotic animals, tried new cuisine and relaxed on lovely beaches and in our own private plunge pool - unfortunately a week was too short to see and do everything we wanted to!

Casa Bromelia. Richard. 'Truly a Hidden Jem' Date of stay October, 2009 Our stay at Geckoes Lodge could not have been better. The location, while off the beaten path enough to be quiet and secluded, was just a short ride away from restaurants and attractions. If you're looking for a place to stay right in the middle of the Puerto Viejo nightlife, this is not the place, if you want some peace and quiet (jungle sounds aside), this is the place for you. Tom and Zoe, the owners, were incredibly helpful and did everything they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. If you don't have a rental car, we would recommend renting a golf cart or 4-wheeler (quad). The taxi service is reliable and efficient, but we enjoyed the freedom to be able to go the beach and town without having to call a taxi.

Ably assisted by caretaker team Jose & Tita, Geckoes is the culmination of a two year project to create private and luxurious holiday accommodation whilst maintaining the beauty and minimising the impact on the surrounding rainforest and its inhabitants. Geckoes was so named to symbolise the symbiotic relationship possible between wildlife and humans. With a commitment to Sustainable development, eco-friendly practices and environmental consciousness our operating practices and the houses have been designed to fit the landscape rather than vice versa. Why the Owner Chose Cocles:
The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is for us the perfect place to be. Here we have everything we could wish for; a spectacular property, beautiful nature, spectacular beaches, a warm sea and a fantastic climate. What we don't have is high-rise buildings and big developments but plenty of individually owned restaurants and businesses with a great mix of nationalities.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Being just 1km off the main road, we can feel as if we are miles from anywhere but in fact we are within easy reach of everything. World-class beaches and marvellous and affordable restaurants are just around the corner. This is what most people would consider living the Caribbean life but we have the rainforest as well! With the rainforest comes the wildlife and we can regularly see Howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and the magnificent Blue Morpho butterflies from our veranda. Geckoes is a beautiful piece of rainforest that we are lucky enough to be able to call home. We look forward to sharing this unique place with you.
