Ansouis is rated one of the Plus Beaux /Most Beautiful Villages in France. Known by visitors for its historic chateau, and by locals for its exquisite restaurant, La Closerie, it has retained a truly authentic quality. The village itself will look after your daily needs with its bakery, café, post office, newspaper shop, and a small but well-equipped grocery market. On Sunday, a lively open air market comes to town, with the aroma of roasted chickens, cured meats, local cheeses, fruit, olives and delicious wines. The same market can be found at other local villages throughout the week.

The local area offers something for everyone; notable wineries, serious hikes or gentle promenades, biking tours (rentals are available in nearby Pertuis), ice cream heaven at L’Art Glacier, or a swim in our nearby fresh water lake, Etang de la Bonde. The historic villages of Loumarin, Cucuron, and Vaugines are minutes away.

Situated at the base of the Golden Triangle of the Luberon, the region offers many popular festivals throughout the year, photography in Arles, music and dance in Aix en Provence, and theatre in Avignon to name but three. It is less than 25 min to Aix en Provence, 45 minutes to the sprawling antique market at Isle sur la Sorgue, an hour to Cassis, Marseille, Avignon, and Arles. Take a ‘French’ picnic to the beach at Sanary Sur Mer or take a boat trip to swim in the hidden coves of the Calanques, or explore the wild beauty of the Camargue on horseback.

Easy access by train (Aix en Provence TGV 25 minutes by car from the house and 2.5 hours from Paris), airport (Marseilles, 40 minutes by car) and other cosmopolitan centers (Nice 3 hours, Avignon 45 minutes by car).

The house:
This authentic village house dating back to the 16th Century offers the perfect base for your stay in the region. Its southern aspect, and all the rooms, look over a gentle valley where each season brings new colors and sights, as the farmers nurture the land and their livelihood. Despite its antiquity, the house offers every modern convenience to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The house is new to the rental market, having been completely restored during 2008. Everything is new, from bed linens, to appliances, although much of the furniture is antique.

Garage: Provides valuable off-street parking, and storage for bikes and the like, and direct access to the house.

First Floor: Two adjoining bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, one with twin beds, one with a double bed. Both provide storage for clothing.

Second Floor: Open plan fully equipped kitchen/living area makes the most of the south facing light to create a very comfortable living space, which includes a fireplace, ample seating, and a large round dining table. There is also a bathroom equipped with a shower, basin, toilet, bath and washing machine. In the entrance, there is a writing table and chair, and an additional wc.

Third Floor: Large master bedroom with high ceilings, a queen sized four-poster bed, generous storage, an arm chair, and table and chair, with internet access. The terrace overlooks the valley, perfect for a quiet read, breakfast, a glass of rosé or a casual supper under the stars.

For shoppers, sightseers, tourists, and people who just love to eat and drink

Guest: Vancouver (Vancouver, Canada)

Our family (with teenagers) loved the town of Ansouis and used it as a starting point to tour the neighboring villages. Lucy (owner) provided us with a list of suggestions on what to do, which we extensively used and found very helpful. The house had everything that you would need and we often had meals on the upstaris terrace looking over a view that is much better than the one shown in the picture attached to the web site. There are a number of good antique and other markets near by that my wife and I enjoyed. The owner is very accomodating, easy to deal with and helpful. Highly recommend.

Best VRBO experience ever - can't wait to go back!

This was our first visit to Provence, and we were delighted with this lovely house! It was clean, spacious, and stylishly comfortable. We spent many hours dining, reading, and relaxing on the terrace, admiring the beautiful view. Our kids (15 and 11) enjoyed the privacy of the downstairs bedrooms. And we made day trips to Aix and Avignon, having no problem returning to Ansouis in time for a relaxing dinner. The village of Ansouis is picturesque and quite fun to explore. We loved buying our croissants every morning at the bakery across the street, and the little store nearby had an impressive selection of fresh produce, for the days we were too lazy to drive to a market. We highly recommend the tea house up the hill, Les Moissines! We were very impressed with the owner, who was very helpful and patient with us. We have already recommended this house to our friends, and can't wait to go back to Ansouis!

Our family of four spent a week in this charming house in the hilltop village. We loved the local people, markets and food. We found everything exceeded our expectations. The house was immaculate. The furnishings charming and the owners did all they could to recommend favorite sights. I thought this was a great value and a spectacular location to experience everything from Monoaco to Aix to Marseilles to Avignon. We rented a car and loved our experience. I would highly recomend it for a honeymoon or a family seeking an authentic experience en Provence.

A stunning house in the heart of Ansouis that oozes authentic Provencal charm, yet offers all the modern comforts of a home from home with a well equipped kitchen, beautiful bathroom and tasteful furnishings. We loved cooking in the open plan kitchen and sitting on the terrace, sipping Rose and watching the sun set over the Luberon Hills. The large master bedroom on the top floor with is original terracotta tiles and wooden beams is light, airy and one of the most relaxing spaces we've ever encountered on holiday. Perfect for catching up on holiday reading! Ansouis itself is a picturesque little village, with a boulangerie, village shop, castle and a market at the weekend. We found a shady square close to the castle where we could play boules in the evening. It's a perfect spot for exploring the Luberon and the coast. The well stocked bookcase and information provided by the thoughtful owner, Lucy, offers excellent suggestions for exploring the region. Our favourite places included Cassis and a boat trip to the calanques; Aix en Provence, Loumarin's Friday morning market and Fort Buoux an extraordinary archeological site at the head of a gorge, where you can experience 60,000 years of human history. We had a fantastic holiday and managed to combine everything you could wish for to keep a family happy - beach, city, countryside and even a little bit of shopping. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

The Perfect Easter Holiday

Guest: Lucy (London, UK)
Date of Stay: 04/09/11 Review Submitted: 04/20/11

What more is there to say than...excellent in every way. The house is amazing, a beautiful constrast of antique and simple decor. Spent every evening enjoying the spectacular view from the terrace over a few glasses of the local rose. There are not many places where one can have a view like this from their bedroom, it was a truely magical getaway for all. The location is idyllic, morning trip into Cucuron for patesseries followed by long walks and visits to nearby lakes. La Closerie restaurant in Ansouis combines delicious food with a friendly atmosphere, a visit there is a necessity. The choice of local markets is excellent, definitely worth a few trips to see the local delicacies, Luberon was a personal favourite. Overall the whole trip was a total success and we loved every minute of it. We would recommend this beautiful house to anyone, it has a wonderfully serene atmosphere that we all loved. Can't wait to come back next year!

Autumn in Ansouis 10/25/10 - 11/4/2010

Guest: Melissa (Fire Island, NY, U.S.A.)
Date of Stay: 10/25/10 Review Submitted: 11/20/10

We absolutely loved staying in this house! It is extremely comfortable, offering the amenities and convenience of a contemporary house while maintaining all the taste and charm of a genuine 17th century French villa. The view from the terrace is breathtaking and the southern exposure allowed us to lunch al fresco even though is was Autumn. The house is very clean and complete with crisp linens and towels, a huge gorgeous bath-tub, great shower with excellent water-pressure and hot water, modern uncluttered kitchen complete with supplies one would need to whip up a delicious meal after a day of marketing! As we were there "off" season, we were unnecessarily worried about being cold in the house as the heating system is excellent. To top it off, Ansouis is the perfect starting point for experiencing the many wonderful aspects of the surrounding areas. There are nearby vineyards and wineries, ancient churches and towns, farms and markets, excellent restaurants and spectacular views everywhere you turn. It is also a manageable driving distance to nearby cities such as Aix and Marseilles. As such, we were able to fit in quite a number of sightseeing activities during our stay. Ansouis itself perfect. Peaceful, small, beautiful and very French. Most of the locals speak only French and were unobtrusive yet very friendly when approached. Lucy, the owner of the house was an incredible resource and helpful beyond expectation which I expect comes from her passion an appreciation of this area which she obviously enjoys sharing. In addition to her notebook of suggestions and information about the house, she has supplied the house with up-to-date guidebooks and maps which we really made use of. Our stay in Ansouis and in this house could not have gone smoother or been more satisfying!

Idyllic!

Guest: Travel Junkie (Holland, Michigan, USA)
Date of Stay: 09/11/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

We found this charming home in Ansouis to be a perfect location for exploring Provence and the coast. Highlights of the property include its modern kitchen, very roomy bathroom and the upper level master spanning the entire floor. Some of our favorite moments were spent on the patio enjoying breakfast in the morning and watching the sun set, glass of wine in hand, in the evening. The view, and the setting, is phenomenal. From linens to kitchenware, the home is very well appointed and exceptionally clean and well maintained. Our transaction was handled flawlessly. Lucy, the homeowner, is a pleasure to communicate with and provides a great deal of practical information about the home and the area. Her neighborhood contacts are equally a pleasure to meet. We hope to return and relive one of our best holidays ever!

Wonderful home, view, and stay.

Guest: Sarah (London, UK)
Date of Stay: 09/18/10 Review Submitted: 10/13/10

The best thing about this house, apart from comfort and the simple but stylish taste, is that you can combine many vacations in one. You can spend the morning at the market in Aix, spend a day by the sea, or visit the idyllic villages of the Luberon. Ansouis is still very French which is bonus, but our lack of French was never a problem. We stayed for a week, but wished we had stayed longer. The house has every gudie book it seems, which helped us make the most of our time there. Lucy could not have been more helpful in guding us through many aspects of our trip (travel and our time at the house.) Thank you... we will be back!

Lovely Home in Central Provence

Guest: Kelley (Westchester, New York)
Date of Stay: 08/21/10 Review Submitted: 09/13/10

Wonderful location for day trips all over Provence! Very comfortable, authentic village home, tastefully modernized with respect for original detail. Fabulous view from the terrace across the valley, perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after a day of touring. The owners have wonderful suggestions for excursions and restaurants, but have all the comforts of home if you want to have a day of rest. Small village is charming and historic with a bakery just steps away. Ideal for a family of 4 or 5.
