~ Kiplinger's Personal Finance Names Flagstaff One of 10 Best Cities June 1, 2009
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has named Flagstaff as one of the "Best Cities 2009" in its July issue. Flagstaff was the only city from Arizona to make the top 10 list and it puts our town in company with Huntsville, Ala., Madison, Wisconsin and Raleigh, N.C.
"Unlike the trains that regularly come through town, singing out reminders of Flagstaff's heritage, this city is far from predictable," the Kiplinger summary of Flagstaff begins. "You can feel its Old West charm through and through, but Flagstaff is infused with new energy -- both from its residents and college students and Northern Arizona University. The university adds jobs to the city's economy, plus arts and entertainment to its cultural scene."
In determining its top 10, Kiplinger said it was "all about jobs." It reviewed the number of jobs in a community, the quality of those jobs and the ability of the cities to hold onto them when the economy softens.
It also gave points to those cities with a "creative class" of jobs where people are "paid to think." It noted that 29% of the jobs in Flagstaff fall into this category. Research has shown that communities with a high percentage of "creative class" jobs are not as highly impacted by economic downturns.
