Our property in located inside the ancient walls of the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Caneda, while enjoying modern conveniences like satellite TV and Broadband Wi-Fi.
Sarlat's history dates back to 840AD. In 1223 the town swore loyalty to King Louis VIII and therefore received freedoms to govern themselves. The town remained loyal to the king of France during the 100 year war. After the war ended in the mid 15th century, the town went through another period of prosperity as they were afforded new privileges by the Crown for their support during the war. Many of the buildings that exist today were built in this period.
After the wars of religion in the 16th century, Sarlat went into a period of decline. Because of this the town missed out on the modernisation brought about by the Industrial Revolution.
The only reminder of this period was that most of the walls were torn down and the Rue de la Republique or "Great Traverse" was cut through the town. The centre was in a poor state and it was only an act of parliament in 1962 - the Malroux Act - that helped fund the restoration of the town centre.
So today, when you walk through the cobbled streets of Sarlat, you are taken back to a time of renaissance buildings, unspoilt and unmatched in all of France. For this reason, Sarlat has become a tourist Mecca and base from which to explore all that the Dordogne and Vezere Valley have to offer
Sarlat is located in France's Dordogne department. This region is also known by it's ancient name of Perigord. The Perigord is further divided into 4 distinct regions.
Sarlat is in the Black Perigord (Perigord Noir) named for the abundance of dense, mainly oak, forests. To the north is the White Perigord (Perigord Blanc), an area of limestone cliffs and caves. Further north again is the Green Perigord (Perigord Vert), filled with rolling farm land and, to the west, is the Purple Perigord (Perigord Pourpre) where vineyards abound.

Stay Inside the Walls of the Medieval Town of Sarlat-La-Caneda
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Sarlat-la-Canéda
We chose to buy here because it is a great base to explore the town of Sarlat and the Dordogne region. Sarlat is a large enough town to offer a variety of restaurants, great shopping and is close to many of the attractions on offer in the Perigord Noir.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Wander down to one of the local bakery shops to pickup your fresh bread / pastries for breakfast. At night, sit in the court yard and relax with on eof the fine wines of the region or wander into town to sit at one of the many restaurants that are found not only in the town square but hidden away through-out the small alley ways within the walled town.
Home of the Museum of Pre-History. Human remains from 40,000 years ago found in this area.
Famous prehistoric cave paintings from 15,000 years ago. The cave was rediscovered in 1940. The original cave was replicated after the wear and tear caused by visitors.
One of the biggests caves in Europe open to the public. A sinkhole 100 metres deep and 40 metres in diameter leads th way to an underground river and spectacular cave formations
If travelling by train from Paris Gare Austerlitz (4 hours), Brive is an ideal place to pick up a hire car and drive to Sarlat (55KM)
Trains stop here from Paris and Toulouse. A regular bus service can then transport you into the centre of Sarlat
Regular trains from Bordeaux terminate here (2 1/2 hour trip) also the bus from Soulliac stops here and in town.

"My friend and I like to refer to our first visit to France as "those salad days". Last year, with my parents, we were able to meet up for a reunion in Sarlat. It was a magical stay. We cooked tarte tatin and coq au vin at home, using fresh produce from the markets. We picked walnuts and apples straight out of the trees and took wonderful daytrips all over the Dordogne. We shared wine with some of the locals in a beautiful garden overlooking the medieval centre of town, and bought up big at La Croix Rouge opportunity shop. It was so relaxing to have a house to feel at home in during out stay. Now we all fondly recall that time as "those Sarlat Days"."

“We greatly enjoyed our stay in the Residence Reygate. It is extremely comfortable, well appointed and with tons of space and it’s only a few minutes walk to the middle of town. The owner is easy to deal with and for what the Residence provides his prices are a bargain. For value and convenience there’s unlikely to be a better place to stay in Sarlat.”
