'SOUTH BOWERS ISLAND'

Directly on the beach and located at the widest point of the Delaware Bay, approx 28 miles across to NJ, this Island home offers something very special that the large resorts don't have, peace and quiet.

Step right onto the sand from this beautiful beach home. If fishing is your thing, cast your line into the water and fresh fish are yours for breakfast or dinner, fishing license required.

You can put your small boat or kayak in the water right off the beach and explore local tributaries where you will find not only the serenity of a wilderness-like landscape but also many species of fish and crabs. Children can ride bikes on the quiet Island road, roller blade or play on the beach, collecting shells and sea glass and be amazed at the site of prehistoric horseshoe crabs that migrate to this area from South America.

Let the sun rising over the Bay and the sound of sea birds wake you in the morning and the gentle rustle of the Bay lapping at the beach lull you to sleep. Enjoy the 'Quiet Life', come to South Bowers Island...

Ahhhh..... The Iguana House was a great vacation! The kids enjoyed themselves too but I could see they wanted a little more action (they are young teens!). The house and area had everything my husband and I like in a vacation. The house offered me music, books, loads of magazine and movies and sun! My husband could fish to his hearts content! The neighborhood is very quiet and the beach is wonderful !It had no blasting radio's, loud conversations or other people sitting on top of your blanket. I really didn't have to worry about the kids riding their bikes on the street. (very little traffic) or being in the water without a life guard. The water was usually very shallow and calm. The house is very comfortable. It's roomy, beautifully decorated, the kitchen has everything you need and my favorite part ... a big laundry room! What a memorable vavcation!

This house is amazing and South Bowers is a real gem! The pictures do not do this house justice as it is absolutely beautiful. We had dinner every night on the porch overlooking the beautiful views - we spent hours on the beach swimming with the kids and viewing the wildlife - turtles, skates, and even dolphins! At lowtide we could walk out and find great conch shells and other beauties the bay has to offer. The kids rode their bikes under the house while I cooked dinner and each night we walked up the street and didn't have to worry about any traffic. This was a real freedom for them! We had the beach to ourselves most days and on the days we shared it with our neighbors, we were greeted by the friendliest people! The kitchen is stocked with everything you could possible need and there are plenty of games for family fun. This is the perfect house for a family looking to spend quality time together. The owner was excellent to deal with and was very patient answering my long list of questions when I initionally inquired about the house. I cannot wait to go back to this peaceful place!

Owner response: I must say our little Island is a very special place. Far enough away from the crowds of the ocean beachs but close enough for a day trip to take the kids to see the ocean and walk the boardwalk. When you return to the quiet life of South Bowers Island you can take a deep breath, sit on the decks, talk about the days adventures and watch a beautiful sunset over the Moores. Come, enjoy the quiet life, come to South Bowers Island.

We had high expectations for this property and unfortunately are very dissatisfied. The surrounding area is lovely. The location is very isolated in terms of attractions and restaurants. This makes for a mostly quiet atmosphere, but the houses on either side are tight. The bay and marshes on either side are beautiful and the house has great views of both. Walks on the beach were convenient, although we had to walk carefully to avoid all the dead and dying horseshoe crabs. The house is directly on the beach, but the term "island" in the title and description is not at all accurate (see the map above.) The house is well-furnished and the kitchen had plenty of utensils, but there was not enough dishwasher detergent, so we had to wash many dishes by hand. We did not think to bring along extra detergent, but we did bring toilet paper, paper towels, linens, and towels, as these are not provided by the owners. Our experience was soured when we were blindsided by a massive cleaning fee after our two-night stay. We were very surprised to be charged any fee, let alone one 25% of the cost of our stay. Everyone in our five-person party cleaned for hours and hours before we left--vacuuming, sweeping, washing dishes, wiping down counters, putting trash in cans outside, tidying, making beds--and left it as clean as it had been when we arrived. The owner informed us afterwards that he hires a professional cleaning service to stop by the house after each visit. According to the owner, the company called after our stay and told him "the place was not cleaned, trash cans not emptied, no floors cleaned etc." (This, unfortunately, was as specific as the owner got when I asked for clarification.) The owner could not explain how emptying trash and cleaning floors we already cleaned could lead to an such a bill. I asked specifically, but the owner declined to confirm whether the amount he charged us was the same amount he was charged by the cleaning company. The owner was rude and vague in our discussions afterwards before declaring "end of discussion" and refusing to respond further. Although the rental agreement did mention "high cleaning standards" and the possibility of a cleaning fee, this was completely unexpected. The owner claims that he has only had to charge a cleaning fee "two or three" times in six years, I have no idea if this is true, but I would urge other potential visitors to use caution. The area is beautiful, but there are better options available.

Owner response: The cleanliness of The Iguana House, our home, is now and has always been a top priority and is well documented in our rental agreement. The threat of a poor review from this visitor, who chose not to live up to this agreement, will not sway us from maintaining these high standards. I am sure all future visitors will be happy to know of our diligence. Thank you, Owner

I had read the reviews, checked out the maps, and already knew the 'beachy' areas of Delaware... and still I was overwhelming pleased with the Iguana House. The openness of the layout, the cleanliness of the whole house, and the views, especially the views, were all appreciated. We enjoyed puzzling about the horseshoe crabs and witnessed a turtle laying an egg. Our week was the first summer vacation we got to spend with our 6-month old granddaughter, and we even celebrated our 35th anniversary; the Iguana House made the occasions even more special. We also enjoyed the visits to the John Dickinson Plantation and to the Lewes historical areas. Next time we visit, we will bring along a boat/kayaks and do more adventuring. Thank you for a relaxing and unforgettable vacation!

Our family just returned from our fantastic vacation! The house has everything you will need - and when we noticed the blender was broken, the owner sent over a new one for us right away:0) My two children enjoyed playing in the sand and water, searching for shells and watching the giant horseshoe crabs along the shore. And my husband and I coiuld keep an eye on them from the deck - the beach is literally right outside your door! It was so nice to be able to sit on the deck at sunset and watch the tide come in. The view is beautiful! The house is close enough to nearby Rehoboth if you are in need of some entertainment for the kids and close to restaurants in Milford, too. We had a fabulous week, got plenty of R & R and look forward to another visit next summer!

Owner response: Mendy and Jason, We want the first word out of our visitors mouth when they open the door to be WOW!!, not just for the unbelievable view of the beach and Bay, which is certainly worthy of a "wow" but also for the way the house seems to take you to a quiet place and lower stress levels by a factor of 100. Don't forget that the house is available year round so keep us in mind for that special event or holiday getaway. Seeya at "South Bowers Island" Bob

We've had the pleasure of staying at South Bowers 5 times. It's becoming our home away from home. The home is beautifully appointed, clean and airy. The elevated tub in the master bath is to die for. Open the window and you can hear the water lapping at the shore. My grown kids loved the open floor plan and 2 decks. We went to the outlets in Rehobeth, mimi golf and you just cant miss Grotto's Pizza. The restaurant on Route 1 where you turn has fabulous seafood. Take out or just get fresh fish from their seafood case. We can't wait for trip #6.

We were a party of 7 adults and a kid. The information presented here in the VRBO site is very understated and subtle. Yes, the place is a bit off the typical NJ-DE tourist circuit and we were a bit apprehensive while approaching it. However, once we reached here, we were stunned by the combination of the beauty, elegance and calmness of this place. The house itself is very beautiful, located in a small and calm community. It is decorated very tastefully and has a great collection of books and DVDs. It has gorgeous views of the bay on one side and green fields on the other side of the road (as mentioned by reviewers before me, the pictures in VRBO do not do justice to this place). My uncle, who was visiting us from Mumbai (India) and is well travelled throughout the world, commented that he never expected that anything like this can surprise him anymore - beautiful and serene. There is a quotation in a showpiece hanging in the main living room – “If you are lucky enough to live on the beach, you are lucky enough”. My wife and I consider ourselves very lucky to have the privilege of enjoying a piece of this heaven. In fact, I thought of keeping this beautiful secret to myself (and share it only with the lucky group of folks who have visited this place before me), but that would be an injustice to thoroughly professional and helpful owner - Bob. Thank you Bob, for everything. And if you are still reading this review to decide whether to book this place or not, please go ahead and do so. You will thank me when you come back. Practical Tip - do not forget to take your supplies of paper products, linens, food and drinks. The kitchen has lots of utensils and is well equipped. Enjoy, Jit - Isha

We had an amazing time -- we truly have not felt this relaxed in quite a long time. The house is beautiful -- and there are stunning views of the marsh and the bay every where you look. Our two young children had fun playing on both expansive decks (there is one in the front of the house and one in the back), combing the beach for treasures, including sea glass and shells, and watching the wildlife (birds, hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, and snails). We took a couple of day trips to Lewes and Rehobeth. And the guys golfed at the Rookery and took a tour of Dogfish Head Brewery in Milford. We were all sad to leave and we can't wait to come back. Book this house today--you won't be disappointed.

Bill and I enjoyed our time tremendously during our week stay. Beautiful weather, beautiful sunsets and beautiful views. We can't wait to visit again! Each morning we would drink our coffee on the deck and watch as the local fisherman left for their morning catch. Long strolls on the beach collecting various treasures was a favorite for both of us. We also enjoyed hanging out on the sand dune that is exposed during low tides. We even dabbled in fishing off the point. The house was gorgeous, decorated with great taste and luxury, we felt very much at home (although we spent most of our time on the decks and out on the beach). We would however come in to watch the Phils! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Best Vacation I've ever had. Very relaxing. Beautiful house and views, watched turtles come out of the sand in the morning and go to the water. Sea glass everywhere, conch shells. A sand bar to play on, boats. I could go on and on. The house has everything you need. The pictures do not do the house or the view justice. If your looking for peace and serenity this is the place for you.

June is the month turtles come on shore to lay eggs, the kids can't wait for the eggs to hatch and then watching the young find there way to the water.
