Welcome to Villa des Carrières – our home in Vers-Pont-du-Gard.
Our two bedroom, one-level villa is ideally situated on the edge of a charming village in the shadow of that most famous of Roman aqueducts – the Pont-du-Gard. The old quarries (carrières) that supplied stone for the Roman structures in our area are just a short walk from our front door, as is the village bakery, tabac and grocer.
We are 11 kilometres from the beautiful medieval town of Uzès, with its cafes and restaurants, Ducal Palace and colourful weekly markets at the Place aux Herbes. We are 25 minutes from Avignon and Nîmes, and just over an hour from the delightful coastal towns of Aigues-Mortes and Grau du Roi.
If it’s beach that you are looking for La Grande Motte (reputed to be the best beach on the French Mediterranean) is also just about an hour’s drive away. The beach at Grau du Roi is smaller but also very fine, with all the services of the town close at hand. But with our pool and patio you can also just sit back and laze the days away at home.
With outstanding wine and 300 days of sunshine a year in our region of France, life is good.
Inside: Our house was built in 1990 with thick walls to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s ideal for a small family or one or two couples and anyone who wants to enjoy indoor-outdoor living at its best. We have two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with two singles. A portable baby bed is also available. There is a double sofa bed in the living room, which also features a wood-burning stone fireplace, flat screen TV, DVD and CD player. The kitchen is fully-equipped ‘Provençal-style’ with a large gas range and grill, microwave, dishwasher and plenty of dishes and utensils. The veranda sunroom is ideal for dining (except in winter) with a large family table seating eight. The modern bathroom has a large jetted tub and separate shower. There is a washing machine.
We have Wi-Fi internet (ADSL), and free local calling.
Outside: The pool is the perfect place to cool off after sightseeing, shopping or any activity. It is accompanied by a beautiful stone patio ideal for sunbathing, or a bit of leisurely reading.
The house is surrounded by a high wall, ensuring your privacy. There is a barbeque and furniture for sitting or dining outdoors. There is also a playhouse for children.
Activities: The Pont-du-Gard is just 4 kilometres from our house. It’s spectacular. You can visit at your own pace, picnic and swim in the river, or make an afternoon of it by renting a kayak in Collias and paddling underneath the arches.
The markets in Uzès (Wednesday for produce and Saturday for some of everything) are not to be missed. Nearby are Avignon, (visit the Palace of the Popes, or enjoy the summer theatre festival), Nîmes (with its Roman Arena and the Maison Carré), Arles (Roman Arena, Van Gogh house and excellent Museum of Antiquities), and Orange (exceptionally well-preserved Roman amphitheatre).
And of course the entire area is a feast for eyes as you walk, bicycle or drive through vineyards and villages. It’s real France, without the tourist hype of the Cote d’Azur. Bon appetit et santé!
