The Sail Loft Villa...
Coral Bay is the "country" side of St. John and the village is reminiscent of the slow pace of the tropics decades ago. Located approximately 750 feet above the sea, on a beautiful mountainside overlooking the largest natural harbor in the Caribbean is "The Sail Loft Villa". The view from "The Sail Loft" encompasses not only the harbor and verdant mountains, but also a coral reef that forms a natural lagoon (Lagoon Point) as well as an island (Leduc Island), and of course, the blue Caribbean Sea, beyond.
It is an endlessly changing and interesting view. The elevation and the way the home is sited helps make it environmentally elegant and cool. The house is laid out east to west, which allows the trade winds to naturally cross ventilate the interior, as the trades blow from an easterly direction most of the time. The location further benefits comfortable island living by being accessed by paved public and estate roads and an easy driveway entrance.
In fact, after you arrive by ferry, the route to the home is best traveled by taking the North Shore Road, through the Virgin Islands National Park, one of the most scenic drives in the world, and thence via the Upper Carolina estate road to the residence. You are now very close to Coral Bay village and only a 20 minute drive through National Park lands to Cruz Bay. Ten minutes takes you to the famous beach at Maho Bay or ten minutes to the head of the Reef Bay Trail, the best hike on St John (IMHO).
The Villa: Situated on 1.2 acres, "The Sail Loft", was first and foremost designed as a home for a family just after they arrived on St John after a six year sailing adventure, sailing around the world. Their requirement was to have a home from which they could keep an eye on their sailboat in the harbor. The children are now grown and on their own, and the home has just had a six month total refit.
Naturally, the home is decorated in a nautical theme, with antiques, artifacts, original art and items collected from the owner's world travels. All the rooms are unique, this is not just another cookie cutter villa designed for the tourist trade.
Guests enter the residence through a curved stone arch, designed after the entrance to the Danish Fort at Fortsberg, into a courtyard tiled with coral stone, mined from an uplifted reef in Puerto Rico. A portion of the courtyard is a covered gallery and has classic white wicker chairs with a varnished teak center table. An ideal spot to enjoy the views, gather for drinks, dinner or entertaining.
The Great room is accessed from the courtyard through arched mahogany doors. It is a spacious room, with arched window openings, wonderful and varied views, and an exposed beam ceiling over varnished cypress planking. Three sets of varnished mahogany French doors open to the expansive decks. An oval cherry dining table is placed just back from the largest set of doors allowing guests to enjoy the view. The emphasis is on comfort.
Two overstuffed slip covered sofas face each other on either side of a large teak coffee table, in the sitting/media area. Between the sofas there is a flat screen LCD television connected to cable and a DVD. The stereo system has a CD player, with an iPod dock for your music. There is a CD music collection as well. At the far end of the room is a nook with a desk and DSL service for your computer, internet and email.
The Kitchen, open to the room, is equipped for all types of gourmet cooking. It is surrounded by a mahogany bar, and allows the cook to participate in any social gathering. Appliances are top of the line stainless steel, and custom mahogany cabinets offer plenty of storage with lots of plate ware.
The Upper Level Master Bedroom is also accessed from the courtyard and features a West Indian Colonial four poster queen bed, a reading chair, a teak armoire and mahogany dressers. The bathing area is unique. It is "ensuite" with the sleeping area, and is divided by a neck high partition.
In the bath is a two sink coral stone vanity framed by 2 windows. A stone outdoor shower inlayed with sea shells (collected from around the world) is accessed by a cypress door. Two French doors open out to the deck.
The lower level of "The Sail Loft" is accessed by an elegant mahogany and travertine spiral staircase from the center of the courtyard. On entering the lower deck, the guest has several choices. To your right are two bedrooms both opening out to the wide deck. To your left a third bedroom suite that opens onto a screened porch.
Straight ahead is a third deck area with hot tub. Additionally, there is a wet bar with full size refrigerator, a classic wooden Bonzini foosball table, a sitting area with chairs and umbrella. An outdoor shower is located at the very far end of the deck just before the laundry room.
The lower master bedroom has a king bed, private bathroom and a small kitchenette with sink, microwave, coffee-maker etc. This suite opens out to its own private, screened porch that overlooks the spa deck. The other two bedrooms suites are large and airy and are separated by a common bathroom. They both feature king size beds, and full size sofas and are very tastefully appointed, with sailing models and original art.
The laundry room is located at the extreme west end of the house.
