Frustration with owners

Home was as represented, although air conditioning did not work well in the second story, so we just opened windows and didn't use air. The twin beds did not have slats to hold mattresses in securely. The outside frame support may have been sufficient for small children's movement in bed, but not adult movement! (3) dirty adult "Depends" were left under one bed from the previous occupants. We were frustrated with the owners keeping our cleaning fee; we cleaned before we left, as we had been instructed, "leave the home as you found it".. The minor cleaning issues, (shower not wiped out, small utility room not swept), did not justify the amount withheld. Additionally, we were charged a significant amount for ostensible "ring" on the coffee table, that we were unaware of. Again, there didn't seem justification. We might have considered renting again, as the area is lovely, if not for the frustration of getting our full security deposit returned in a timely fashion , and losing our cleaning deposit, when we cleaned based on contract expectations.
Owner response:Our contract specifically states that our home must be left clean and in the condition in which it was given to our renters. Our home is immaculate and we kindly ask that for those who rent to please clean our home and leave it as it was given to them. To ensure this happens, a cleaning deposit is required at the time of rental and is returned after inspection Our home was left spic and span clean for our renters. Upon returning to our home, we discovered a large gouge on the top of our coffee table, a broken shower head, a broken curtain rod and missing bed pillows. A portion of the security deposit was retained for the repairs/replacement of the broken items listed above. In addition, the home was not cleaned, all bathroom showers, floors and sinks were filthy and furniture had been moved around the family room to accommodate their family. We have rented our home for 5 years now, and we have never had an issue with anyone prior to this family and who did not get their cleaning deposit back. It was also discovered that the renters exceeded the number of allowed occupants by about six people for a family reunion. The Renters were in violation of the contract and could have had their entire security deposit retained for exceeding the number of occupants. We feel the renters are disgruntled and were clearly wrong and we would not have them back again after this anyway.
