CHIC & CHARMING PETITE MAISON -- ACROSS FROM NOTRE DAME

You will feel so much "at home" in our beautiful Petite Maison, on the easily accessible ground floor of a lovely 17th century building, situated in one of Paris' most charming neighborhoods. Our little "quartier" is featured in Frommer's "Memorable Walks in Paris;" it is truly one of the most historic, lovingly preserved areas in the entire city.

Our chic two-bedroom, two-bath 820 s.f. pied a terre is tucked away on a serene side street (at 1, rue Maitre Albert) named for a famous 17th century educator. You will awaken to the sounds of birds chirping in our private garden, along with the bells of the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame, which appears like magic when you turn right out of our front door.

Our "little house" in the city (so-named by some Parisian friends) is just steps from the bouquinistes (booksellers) which line the Seine, and a five minute walk to the famous Place St. Michel and the excitement of the Latin Quarter. Within minutes you can see the Sorbonne, the Roman baths and Unicorn Tapestries at the Cluny Museum, take a quick stroll to Ile St. Louis, visit the Conciergerie where Marie Antoinette spent her waning days, or take in a fabulous classical concert at the famous St. Chappelle built by Louis the IX.

Our lovely neighborhood is very French, a rarified historic district filled with galleries, artisans, restaurants and unique shops. (The restaurant Maitre Albert, headed by gastronomic chef Guy Savoy, is right next door). The wonderful open air market on Place Maubert is a three-minute walk, as is the Metro and a plethora of bakeries, wine purveyors and a fabulous cheese shop.

The apartment itself is exceedingly comfortable and handsomely furnished. It features two quiet bedrooms (one upstairs, and one down), each with a en suite bathroom -- perfect for two couples or a family. Both can be made up with two twins, or one king sized bed. A comfortable day bed in the living room accommodates a fifth guest. (We also offer an Aero bed if you have a sixth, child-sized guest traveling with you). Two oversized chairs grace the spacious living room; it is a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine with friends and recount the day's adventures.

The modern kitchen is fully equipped to whip up some French cuisine using your finds from the market at Place Maubert. Petite Maison's unique architectural features include classic "tommettes" (old tiles) on the floor and a barrel vaulted brick ceiling in the living room. A striking iron chandelier illuminates the large dining table, where you can spread out your repast, and bask in the light from two walls of windows. We are also blessed with a private garden, a lovely place to enjoy a morning coffee during the warm summer months.

Our Paris based staff is just a phone call away should an unexpected problem arise. They are also available to assist with restaurant, event or tour reservations, as well as to arrange transportation. A personalized "users guide" filled with our personal recommendations will help make the most of your sojourn in our favorite city in the world. A DVD with French themed movies; a CD player with music library and travel guides are also on hand should you decide to enjoy a quiet evening "chez nous."

If you are looking for lovely, comfortable and quiet accommodations just steps away from all the best Paris has to offer, look no further than Petite Maison.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

We're Alan, Michelle & Tess Heilpern, the "Three Muskateers" as we like to call ourselves -- certainly an appropriate name when we're staying in Petite Maison, our slice of 17th century heaven in a picture-perfect corner of the Left Bank. Here we're seen having loads of fun (in front of the Louvre) in our favorite city on earth.

Our full-time habitat is Los Angeles where we enjoy basking in the sunny weather. But whenever we get a chance, we're staying in one of our Parisian homes away from home.

Alan is an Emergency Physician; Michelle a former health care executive now happily marketing our two fantastic Parisian apartments on VRBO. (Don't miss our other listing, #218078, Juliette, on Ile St. Louis). Thirteen-year-old Tess knows Paris inside and out, having traveled here regularly since she was an infant. An afficianado of Berthillon ice cream, French cheese and Angelina's hot chocolate, she has developed an impressive array of recommendations for kids staying in our properties.

Why the Owner Chose Paris Arrondissement 5

Alan had the pleasure of studying medicine in France, where he became enamored with its people, culture and beauty (and undoubtedly a few French women). Fortunately for Michelle, he waited for her to arrive on the scene, ultimately proposing to her on bent knee in front of Notre Dame -- smack in the middle of our two properties on Ile St. Louis and the Left Bank. (We can most certainly offer advice on all things romantic in Paris!) When we decided to take the “leap” into home ownership (after visiting for more than a decade) we knew the exact location that surpassed all others in Paris -- our little Petite Maison quartier.

The Unique Benefits of this Apartment

Petite Maison was our first “home away from home” in Paris; it’s where we always choose to stay when we are visiting ourselves. Not only is it incredibly comfortable, quiet and charming, but the neighborhood couldn’t be more perfect. It’s just a three-minute walk to the metro and amazing open air market at Place Maubert, where we pick up our morning croissants, luscious yogurts and cheeses, and the makings of dinner “a la maison” at the organic vegetable stands. During the summer there is our very special private garden retreat; in the cooler months, a wonderful hearth, oversized chairs into which to sink and share a glass of wine at the end of the day; plus luxury robes and hotel-quality mattresses. It’s a five minute walk to the attractions of the lively Left Bank -- Shakespeare & Company, St. Chappelle and Ile St. Louis; another ten minutes on foot takes you to the oh so chic yet bohemian Marais and Jewish Quarter. Most important, we take special care with our guests, offering our personal recommendations on things to do and see. And our really fabulous Paris-based management company can help arrange airport transfers, securing French cell phones, making reservations and be waiting with even warm croissants and cafe upon your arrival. We call our company Perfect Paris, because we strive to ensure that every moment of your valuable vacation time is just that -- perfect.

    • We had a wonderful stay. There were 2 of us girls celebrating our 40th birthdays. The pictures on the site are accurate except that the rooms are smaller in person as should be expected in one of the oldest sections of Paris. Highlights: 1. We each had our own bedroom and bath giving us privacy. The beds can be set up as twins making it even more versatile. 2. The location is excellent. The Maubert station is at the end of the street. You can easily walk to the I'le St. Louis, one of my favorite areas of Paris. You're on the back side of Notre Dame when you walk out the door and walk a few steps. The Latin Quarter was a really neat area that I hadn't explored before this trip. It's now a new favorite. 3. Food and shopping options are great. The market at Place Maubert is great and open Tues, Thur, and Sat. We bought linens to take home and produce for the week. There are 2 great boulangeries on the Place Maubert. There were also other food shops we didn't take advantage of. There are 2 Franprixs close by with the closer one open on Sundays and until 9:00 at night. We could have eaten every meal at home between the market, the grocers, and the very well-equipped kitchen, but we chose not to! Atelier Maitre Albert next door was our last meal Saturday night and worth every penny. We should have tried the prix fixe lunch but didn't make it back in time during the day. 4. Just about everything you need is supplied in the apartment. Dishwashing and clothes-washing detergent, coffee, tea, spices, sugar, many guidebooks, videos, books. The kitchen had a good sized refrigerator, microwave, oven, stove, and dishwasher. 5. The owner is located in LA and was very approachable and responsive to all questions. 6. It's amazing how quiet this location is. We walked off the RER B into all that Notre Dame tourist traffic and were initially discouraged. Then a few minutes later we cleared that and found our street, Maitre Albert, which is almost hidden. In summary, we loved this place. My friend and I would both highly recommend the property and the owner. We plan on using it again when we bring our families.

    • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Michelle's apartment - so comfortable and thoughtfully fitted out. We recommend it to our friends - but don't tell everyone, or we won't be able to get a booking next time we go to Paris!

    • I reserved Petite Maison for an upcoming trip and then unfortunately had to cancel our reservation. So I cannot comment on the apartment itself, but I did want to pass along that Michelle was a delight to deal with. She was very professional, helpful, candid, and prompt in responding. I would not hesitate to reserve.

    • We have stayed in various rental apartments in Paris every year for the past 9 years, but none of them match the comfort, convenience, charm, and location of the "Petite Maison". We stayed at the Petite Maison from August 28 to September 10th--and it was two weeks of sheer bliss. whenever we traveled for a night or two and returned, we felt like we came "home". Michelle is the most knowledgeable and most "available" owner we have ever come across, and absolutely no detail in comfort and class was omitted. Everything was spic-and-span, beautiful, and very home-y. Bakeries, cheese stores, delis, grocery stores, banks, newspaper kiosks, book stores, subway stations, and at least 20 restaurants were only 1/2 block to 1/ block away. The location, just off the Seine overlooking the Notre Dame, and a few steps to charming Ile St. Louis (& its myriad of Berthillon ice creame shops), is absolutely unparalleled. You can't possibly have dreamed of a better location. Michelle gave the best recommendations for the most fabulous little out-of-the-way restaurants just a block or three away, and she knew and readily shared all of the best kept shopping secrets in Paris. We're never staying in Paris again unless we can have the use of this apartment--when you've experienced the best, there is no settling for second-rate.

    • We just returned from Petite Maison and it was terrific. The owners are extremely helpful, offering up great tips and help and with travel arrangements. The location is perfect, close to everything but on a quiet street. The apartment had great amenities and plenty of space for four. We had a great time and would definitely go back.

    • Our family of four stayed at Petite Maison this past summer and loved it! The location was great -- close to the metro, Notre Dame, the Marais, the Latin Quarter. We loved getting fresh breakfast food in Place Maubert and eating it in the apartment garden. The apartment is comfortable, nicely decorated, and had all the amenities we needed for a great stay in Paris. I would highly recommend Petite Maison for an authentic stay in Paris.

    • Michelle, "Les Girls" cannot thank you enough for the stay at "Petite Maison". It truly felt like home the minute we stepped inside. Olivier was there to greet us and tell us everything we needed to know about the apt., as well as valuable tourist info. It was so convenient to everything, restaurants, banks, shopping, the metro, and of course, Notre Dame. We visited almost all of your suggestions in the info. packet and we think you are truly an expert tour guide. Ii will certainly return to "Petite Maison" on my next visit to Paris!

    • We truly enjoyed everything about our stay at the "Petite Maison". The apartment is centrally located on the left bank of the Seine almost directly across from Notre Dame. We were able to walk almost anywhere, were close to shopping, wonderful restaurants, the metro and many of the Paris highlights. My husband and I were there with our college-aged son and a friend. It was perfect for us-- allowing us to enjoy some meals at home and providing common space to visit with one another when we were'nt touring the city. Everything was clean and welcoming (very European)in an old neighborhood with so much charm. I only wish we had visited when the weather might have allowed us to enjoy the inviting garden area. We were so happy to stay in a place where we felt so much a part of Paris--like we belonged! We can't wait to visit again.
