Wellfleet house description
This historic home is only steps away from the Cape Cod bike trail, which begins here and extends southward some 25 miles. The trail is popularly used for bikes, but also for walking, roller-balding, running, or simply strolling. Bike rentals are available locally, or bring your own. The National Seashore is located right beside the bike trail, and has fascinating hiking trails maintained by the National Park Service. All these trails lead to the Atlantic Ocean. The rental home itself is on a vast tidal inlet and salt marsh. Its sunny living room has a working fireplace. If you're a book-lover, you'll be happy with its extensive library. The dining room has a table that seats 10 people. There is an eat-in-kitchen, a laundry room and a shaded three season porch. Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor with an adjacent bath with new plumbing fixtures. Upstairs are four more bedrooms, double and single, and a bathroom that has beautiful hand-set tiles for its shower. The home is surrounded by lawns and gardens. Behind the house, the backyard which includes a brick terrace, umbrella table and chairs, picnic table and gas and charcoal grills, opens out to the salt-marsh and spectacular sunsets over the water. The enclosed outdoor shower with hot water is also behind the house.

We enjoyed the overall atmosphere of this period Cape-Cod house. In particular, the kitchen, dining room, and living room were favorites. Our young grandchildren could roam around the property freely, without our fearing for their safety. The views over the salt marsh at sunset were stunning. The house is well-situated for trips to both ocean beach and inland ponds. We should mention, however, that the exterior of the house is badly in need of refurbishing, and the bathrooms definitely need rehabbing (we used the outdoor shower).

Owner response: We take all our reviews to heart. Since Judy stayed with us back in 2011, we've made some major changes. Repainted the entire house and completely re-shingled the back. We installed a new shower upstairs that has real hand-set ceramic tiles, and put in new plumbing in the downstairs bathroom with a new tub-surround. Really nice. Ed

About the owner: This home was built in 1849 by Captain Scotto Foster, whose whaling ship made his fortune. Just before the First World War, my grandmother, Lillian Meeser, purchased the property to live and work in. She was a famous painter in her day, one of the founding members of the Provincetown Art Association, and an early practitioner of the style of work known as block-printing. She helped to introduce the American public at large to the qualities of light on landscape and architecture, for which the Cape has subsequently become famous. Many of her oils still decorate the walls of this home.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Accessibility. Because all the vacation attractions on Cape Cod can be accessed only by means of a single highway on the Outer Cape, it's important to be able to reach Route 6 without having to travel over-crowded secondary roads. Although this property isn't exactly on Route 6, being separated by a wooded island ad an abandoned road, it has immediate access.
