Map & Owner's Profile
Why the Owner Chose Sandpoint
The Kotschervar family has been in Sandpoint since the late 1800's. Russell Kotschevar, last owner of Kotschevar House, was a well-known local and a bit of a character in his own right. He was also an entrepreneur, artist, architect & builder, sign-painter...built floats for parades and an exceptional wood worker/carver - Pend O'Reille Pete being the best known of these and can be seen at the US Bank on Church ST . This is only for starters. He was also a veteran of WWII at Iwo Jima. Having known him as larger than life, describing him is not so easy - he was one of those people you just have to experience for yourself.
The Unique Benefits at this House
I love being able to walk almost anyplace I want to go. The post office is about a block, cafes & restaurants start within a block. Starbucks is maybe 2 or 3. Strolling from the house to the beach is one of my great pleasures. I love to lounge around the park and watch the birds, swimmers & sailboats. Sometimes I'll sit in one of the swings and look out over the water - a great way to unwind from the day, or just the morning and go back to work refreshed and ready to take on whatever.
Cycling around Sandpoint and a little beyond is great as well - the air, always fresh, is rejuvenating. Visiting Cold Water Creek - about 2 blks away - is fun too, as is the Cedar St Bridge (3 blks) shopping area, Art Walk, Farmer's Market and concerts around town, especially when right on Lake Pend O'Reille each summer.
I will run out of space before I can possibly tell of all the things to do, places to visit and scenic sights to take in, so I hope you'll just come visit and see for yourself and enjoy the beauty of it as much as the rest of us do who are privileged enough to come back every year. You'll want to do the same, summer or winter because, from what I'm told, the skiing is unparalleled and Idaho's best kept secret - I think they're trying to keep down the crowds!
Owner's Map of Sandpoint
I'm a widowed artist raised mostly in the Pacific NW. My family history is rich with characters, artists (a few of the nefarious variety), as well as heroes - at least to me. Somehow I survived them and was improved by them and now I get to "play" in Sandpoint and pretend I'm working at Kotschevar House.

We very much enjoyed staying at the quaint home in down town Sand Point. Super easy walking distance to everything. The caretaker was very helpful about setting us up with some older funky bikes to cruise the town. The home is older but everything was clean and tidy. It is more than fully furnished and nothing was lacking in our stay. We felt it was a good price and relaxing like being at grandma's. If there was any negative point at all it was the city crosswalk warning beeper about 100 feet away. You only heard it when it was night with no traffic and we slept with the windows open for the fresh air. The mild beeping was something that I had to get used to. It sounded like a occasional beep from a microwave oven. I would most happily stay there again. I talked to the next door neighbors and they were very nice and helpful with local tips. The Pizza place on 2nd street was awesome. We rented a pontoon boat for a day on the lake..teens loved it. Silverwood was also a big hit.

We loved the layout of this house, with two adjoining bedrooms upstairs, and a queen bedroom and cute bunk room downstairs. The dining table and breakfast bar were our favorite 'hangout' place. The kitchen was well equipped with plenty of storage. We were a party of two families (4 adults/3 kids), and a dog. and found there was plenty of room to spread out. The beds were super comfy! The price was very reasonable, and we would definitely recommend this rental to friends.

We recently all go together in Sandpoint for a family reunion and this house was wonderful. We especially liked the kitchen and dining room area. A big highlight was the free wifi and the elevated table which was used to set up everyone's computers rather than to eat on. Modern technology even on vacation!!! The only downfall was one shower for all 13 of us but that sounds like it is changing with some remodeling and when the city of Sandpoint finally finishes the overpass to bypass traffic (that now goes right by the house) it will be ideal.

We had 3 couples and 2 young children. The house was comfortable for us - but be prepared: there is only 1 shower. Also, the upstairs bedrooms were more of a loft + bedroom. One room was really an open area that had to be traversed to get to the second room. The stairs up were quite steep and not good for the elderly or very young! It was nice that everything was in walking distance. We could walk to the grocery store for all our needs, and also walked to the lake and around town. There was a lot of street noise, but that should be minimized once the highway bypass is complete.
Owner response:Knowing nothing can ever be perfect, still we strive toward that end at Kotschevar House. It is true there's one shower, but there is a jacuzzi tub - we opted for that instead of the 2nd shower. However, this is the first time anyone has mentioned it. Future plans include an additional shower - all in good time; this is Kotschevar House's first year of operation and I'm sure we'll get the hang of it. I wasn't aware there was an elderly person in this group, but at 73 I have had no problem with those stairs and my uncles (all in their 90's, one even 98) used them with little difficulty. The people who stayed some months ago were all in their 80's & 90's and they wrote us a terrific review, never mentioning a problem to us with the stairs. I do think small or young children have a problem with all stairs, so it stands to reason they might find these difficult. I really appreciate the guests who take their time to write us a review. Thanks to all who have done so. The Management

Best Value and Convenience" My family, friends and I rented this house for a holiday ski trip. It was our first trip to Sandpoint, ID and to the local ski resort. After an extensive search for accomodations, I found Kotschevar House to be the best value I could find, particularly on such short notice and needing sleeping arrangements for eight. We could not have been more pleased, as it's a four bedroom, with two living areas and a huge kitchen/ dining area. It's a full kitchen and fully equipped, and we saved a lot of money having the ability to prepare our own meals. It has been beautifully re-modeled and updated. Conveniently located a brief 30 minute drive up the mountain to the ski resort, it was fantastic to be able to return from a long day of skiing and be able to soak my weary, aging muscles in the brand-new whirlpool tub, large enough for two, in the master bedroom! The amount of money we saved on lodging and meals literally paid for the skiing, and we had the privacy and convenience of a private home! They even have a small apartment behind the house for someone needing additional sleeping arrangements of lodging! We were ecstatic about our stay and vacation, and will return soon, possibly for Spring Break if it's available.

Charm, Comfort & Convenience! Loved it!" My girlfriends and I get together every couple of years and like to try new places to stay. This year we decided to stay in the newly remodeled Kotschevar House! We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find that the house had a very comfy cozy atmosphere. The house was very clean and was just as the owner told us it would be. I was especially impressed with the location of this home because it is literally in the mainstream of the quaint town of Sandpoint. We were able to walk to everything we wanted to do. There was everything that one might need if we wanted to cook a meal(which we did not as we ate at one of the many great restaurants that were close by)in the fully stocked bright kitchen. The whirl bath in the master was a delight to have. The mural on the living room wall was beautiful. The layout was perfect for us 4 girls. The owner was very helpful in answering our questions and very quick to return our security deposit when we returned back home after our trip was over. The owner has managed to make Kotschevar House feel like you are staying at a friends house for the weekend and not a rental! I travel a lot and am not too easily impressed with most places and would have to say that this was not your average rental house. It was very reasonably priced and exceeded my expectations. I hope to make it back to Sandpoint again this summer and if I do I will surely rent Kotschevar House again.
