This romantic private home is enclosed in a high walled garden with many tres and tropical plants and a sit-float pool with a waterfall. The pool is shared by all guests and there is an outside shower. The property is located in Tulum Pueblo, in the original Maya neighborhood, a land the Chan Santa Cruz Maya have inhabited for centuries; a short 7 min. drive to the lovely white powder sand beaches and maya ruins of Tulum. Be local or tourist as you like in this culturally rich and friendly place. It is 5 blocks to Town Plaza and 3 Blks to Maya church; an easy walking distance to restaurants, transportation, markets, shops, fiestas, and bank. Houses have Wifi internet access and air conditioning.

There are 2 houses on the property. The Main House and a Cottage.
The Main House has 3 bedrooms; the upstairs bedrooms have a large terraces overlooking the garden and pool. It has a full service kitchen, 2 bathrooms; upstairs and downstairs and a main living/dining room with a bar. A stairway leads to 2nd floor and continues on up to a large roof terrace. The living room has 2 single day beds. The Main House Sleeps 8 or 9 if rented with all 3 bedrooms or if rented w/only 2 bedrooms 6 or 7.

The cottage has 2 floors. Each floor has a separate unit. Each "Cottage" unit is one large room with a kitchen at one end, locking large closet, a bathroom, double bed in lower unit and queen bed in upper unit. Each "Cottage" unit sleeps 2 and can accomodate a child also.

The Main House and Cottage units can be rented separate or together. If all are rented, 13 people can be accomodated. The pool and front garden patio area are shared by all guests. There is also an outdoor shower for removing sand after beach excursions. The Main House has a private back yard w/barbeque. The upper Cottage unit has a balcony and both Cottage units share a large roof terraza on top.

Maya neighbors did all the construction of stone, fine hardwoods and tile; a reminder of where you are. The style of the houses...well, I call it "accidental architecture", the end result of an ongoing collaboration between various local builders and a gringa (me). First they were built in 1985 and were destroyed by hurricane Roxanne . Only the floors remained. There is a comfy hard to explain atmosphere here in this garden and in these houses. Everything I need for comfort and inspiration. They are an interesting blend of ancient and modern with all the comforts of home but not too many. A great place to come with a group of friends or family. Also, many couples enjoy the place and lone travellers. It is very safe and private. Honeymoon couples love it and my manager loves surprising them with special preparations. It is a wonderful spot to enjoy the privacy of a home in the Maya village part of Tulum. The town continues to spread out and grow in all directions. Our neighborhood does not change much and if one desires to dip into the tourist scene, that is nearby at the beaches and their restaurants and ruin sites. Costs for everything in town are about 50% less than on the beach.

Both houses have very high ceilings, thick stone walls, ceiling and floor fans throughout. Both Cottage Units and all bedrooms in the Main House have air conditioning. There are many trees on the property creating a very cool atmosphere inside and out. The pool is a lovely spot to sink into after excursions and to chill out and children love it of course.

Testimonials:

Tulum feels alive. So many good restaurants, very cheap. Delicious sweet pineapples, $4 at home here $1.50 or less. Incredible! We also found our way to the pastry shop and ended up trying one of almost everything. I guess it wasn't a good idea to go there after diving all day but we certainly enjoyed our dessert brownies and pastries the next morning, by the pool, were quite a treat. We ate at several of the places you mentioned and also discovered a couple on our own.

The food was inexpensive and quite tasty and the casual atmosphere (shorts, tshirt, barefoot accepted) sure made it easy to go anywhere for a great meal. Coqueta (cat) was the perfect hostess. We were able to do 6 cenote dives and 4 ocean dives and I must say diving the cenotes was quite an adventure -- very different from diving in the ocean. Tulum is bursting with color! The beaches were beautiful and it seemed as if everything was in bloom -- so unlike things in Indiana.

We spent a day a Tankah Caleta and it was truly one of the most relaxing days of my life. We got there fairly early in the morning so we had the place to ourselves until early afternoon. It was so nice having a week where I only had to worry about finding a shady palm tree to lay under; one that would provide plenty of sun for an afternoon nap.

It was a fantastic vacation! I'm really glad I did the web search and found your house. The house is beautiful and so very comfortable. It is easy to relax and wind down. Lots of wonderful memories and time well spent with my family. Peg Main House March 2005

We were starting to fanaticize that we’d never have to leave. We could live here easy. Everything we need is close by. The townspeople are so kind and beautiful. There’s so much here to do and see and be. Thank you Donna for being our host. Do you rent by the year? Tira & Patrick Cot. March 2005

We enjoyed your lovely house. The courtyard and gardens are perfect. We spent hours here. The beaches are the prettiest we’ve ever seen. Kathleen & family, Main House March 2005

What a fantastic house. Our 4 Yr. Old spent the first 2 days in the pond/pool. Binda & Richard, Main April 2005

The Unique Benefits at this House & Cottage

Since I have opened the houses to vacation rentors, it has been a pleasure to meet you in person when I happen to be there when you are and when not, to enjoy reading your remarks in the guest books in the houses. Tulum is growing leaps and bounds. My neighborhood remains much the same on a scale of things. Streets are paved now and fewer pigs roaming the street. I don't mind at all 24 hour electricity and predictable town water and the wonderful italian/french/argentinian restaurants and a super market I can drive to. Still there are completely abandoned beaches to roam and new ceynotes and lagoons to explore and discover. Most enjoyable though is to touch base again with my wonderful Maya neighbors who continue to teach me so many things.

Owner's Map of Tulum

I discovered Tulum by accident. I had never taken a vacation. One evening a lifelong friend, a school teacher phoned and said she was pouring over a map and had a terrific idea. She wanted me to go with her to Tulum and stay on a white sand beach with our children and explore Maya Ruins for the summer. I was between jobs at the time and she was so insistent and I was too tired to protest so I agreed to go to this off the beaten path place in Mexico she had found on the map. We arrived and it began to look very sketchy that we would find a place to stay. The children were getting antsy and the road was barely a road. There were only 3 resorts on the beach and they were pretty much abandoned and nowhere to stay in town. but we found one abandoned resort on the beach and the owner agreed to rent to us a cabana with a bathroom and we cooked for our kids in their kitchen. We were the only tourists. We returned our rental car to Cancun the next day and spent an idyllic 2 months there on the beach with our children, hitching rides with the local maya into town to buy groceries. This is how I discovered Tulum. We were the only white faces in the area and one woman in town had a refrigerator and she sold ice cubes by the cube! This was quite a treat! We would sit on the curb enjoying our one ice cube before it melted. I found myself returning to Tulum and on about my 3rd trip there, a local Maya friend convinced me I should purchase a part of his property in town and I did. I have been returning every year since for 25 years and continue my love affair with Tulum and continue to discover new things every trip! Donna, Owner of Stone Tree Little Ceynot
