Location: Tulum, Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Mayan Riviera, Mexico (1 Hour drive from Cancun/A SHORT 5 MIN DRIVE TO THE SAND!!!)
Accommodations: House & Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths (Sleeps 8-12)
This romantic private home is enclosed in a high walled garden with many trees and tropical plants and a sit-float pool with a waterfall. This property is located in Tulum Pueblo, a village cut from the jungle, a short 5 min. drive to the many fine beaches and famous Ruins Tulum by the Sea. It is situated in the original ancient maya neighborhood of Tulum, a place the Chan Santa Cruz people have inhabited for centuries. Be local or tourist as you like in this culturally rich and friendly place. Within an easy walking distance are taxi's & main bus station, restaurants, shops, fiestas, bank with ATM, games, dances, a Circus sometimes. Tulum has a variety of ever changing activities to choose from. A stroll in the evenings is highly recommended and the bird songs are exquisite! The beaches are separated from the village by dense jungle and not walkable without a guide but an easy drive to the many beaches with easy access and parking. It is good to come home from the sand and other adventures to a home and town away from home.
There are 2 houses on the property. The Main House and a Cottage. The Main House has 2 bedrooms, each with a double bed and a main room with kitchen/dining/living area and living area has 2 single day beds, 1 bathroom and balcony. Main House Sleeps 6 max. The cottage has 2 floors. Each floor has a separate unit. Each "Cottage" unit is one large room with a kitchen at one end, locking large closet, a bathroom, double beds and single couch fold down beds. Each "Cottage" unit sleeps 3 max.
The Main House and Cottage units can be rented separate or together or a combination of one unit of Cottage with Main House. The pool and front garden patio area are shared by all guests. The Main House has a private back yard. The upper Cottage unit has a balcony. Maya neighbors did all the construction of stone, fine hardwoods and tile; a reminder of where you are. The style of the houses...well, I call it "accidental architecture", the end result of an ongoing collaboration between various local builders and a gringa (me). First they were built in 1985 and were destroyed by hurricane Roxanne . Only the floors remained. Ouch! These re-constructions are about 13 years old and as hurricane proof as they come is the hope. They appear ageless and without defineable style of solid stone. When I am there, guests often ask what part of the place was there when you started building. Nothing but the main house bathroom is the answer. They assume they have been there for many years. There is a comfy hard to explain atmosphere here in this garden and in these houses. Everything I need for comfort and inspiration. They are an interesting blend of ancient and modern with all the comforts of home but not too many. A great place to come with a group of friends or family. Also, many couples enjoy the place and lone travellers. It is very safe and private. Honeymoon couples love it and my manager loves surprising them with special preparations. It is a wonderful spot to enjoy the privacy of a home in the Maya village part of Tulum (as it continues to spread out and grow in all directions, our neighborhood does not change much and if one desires to dip into the tourist scene, that is nearby at beaches and ruin sites and restaurants.
Both houses have very high ceilings, thick stone walls, ceiling and floor fans throughout and this along with many trees on the property, creates the very cool atmosphere inside and out. The pool is a lovely spot to sink into after excursions and to chill out and children love it of course.
Testimonials:
Tulum feels alive. So many good restaurants, very cheap. Delicious sweet pineapples, $4 at home here $1.50 or less. Incredible! We also found our way to the pastry shop and ended up trying one of almost everything. I guess it wasn't a good idea to go there after diving all day but we certainly enjoyed our dessert brownies and pastries the next morning, by the pool, were quite a treat. We ate at several of the places you mentioned and also discovered a couple on our own.
The food was inexpensive and quite tasty and the casual atmosphere (shorts, tshirt, barefoot accepted) sure made it easy to go anywhere for a great meal. Coqueta (cat) was the perfect hostess. We were able to do 6 cenote dives and 4 ocean dives and I must say diving the cenotes was quite an adventure -- very different from diving in the ocean. Tulum is bursting with color! The beaches were beautiful and it seemed as if everything was in bloom -- so unlike things in Indiana.
We spent a day a Tankah Caleta and it was truly one of the most relaxing days of my life. We got there fairly early in the morning so we had the place to ourselves until early afternoon. It was so nice having a week where I only had to worry about finding a shady palm tree to lay under; one that would provide plenty of sun for an afternoon nap.
It was a fantastic vacation! I'm really glad I did the web search and found your house. The house is beautiful and so very comfortable. It is easy to relax and wind down. Lots of wonderful memories and time well spent with my family. Peg Main House March 2005
We were starting to fanaticize that we’d never have to leave. We could live here easy. Everything we need is close by. The townspeople are so kind and beautiful. There’s so much here to do and see and be. Thank you Donna for being our host. Do you rent by the year? Tira & Patrick Cot. March 2005
We enjoyed your lovely house. The courtyard and gardens are perfect. We spent hours here. The beaches are the prettiest we’ve ever seen. Kathleen & family, Main House March 2005
What a fantastic house. Our 4 Yr. Old spent the first 2 days in the pond/pool. Binda & Richard, Main April 2005
The Casa was mucho bonita. We love the cat and will miss her. Our time in Tulum has been magic. Thank you. Jason, Lauren Daniel & Hart, Main House May 2005
