You may rent only the 1st Floor if you are only 4 or 5 people. The 1st floor bedroom has a double and a single bed. The living room has 2 single beds that can if you choose form a king bed. The houses are stone built with thick stone walls, high ceilings. All bedrooms in the Main House and both Cottage units have air conditioners. The windows are of fine local hardwoods, tiled floors and the houses are fully screened. They have stairways leading to large roof terrazas; ideal places for star gazing and catching the maximum caribbean breezes. The Cottage roof has a fine street view of who and what is passing by below. Don't be surprised if you indeed see an elefant being led down the street or a camel; this signals the circus is in town. Food vendors pass by with excellent offerings and women selling their fine embroidery and hammocks. You can easily live here and never leave home and purchase excellent food, produce, disher, pots, pans and furniture from people passing by on the street.
This property is as safe and private as they come and lends itself to either large group of family or friends or singles and honeymoon couples. Often we have a combo of both . Guests come from various countries. The calendar on this website does not facilitate which house or unit is available on any given night so it is only marked unavailable when all units are reserved for a specific night. You need to inquire as to availability. The small pool and front garden area are shared by all guests.
I started building in 1985. The first houses were built entirely from trees, stones, jungle vine and thatch. Hurricane Roxanne took them down. When I decided to rebuild and this time of solid stone, my neighbors joked with me that I was like the 3 pigs. The rebuilding took place in stages beginning about 18 years ago. The style of the houses, well I call it accidental architecture. I do make plans but it never seems to turn out that way and ends up better than me or my local maya builders intended. For me, they have everything I need for comforts of home and not too much. A great place to bring a group of friends and family for reunions/weddings or just to enjoy the unique privacy of a home in a Maya village in Mexico. Tulum is growing fast in all directions but my neighborhood is protected and has not changed too much. Once you enter the high walls of this preserved tropical garden, you are in your own world unless you decide you want to open the small entrance to the property door. It is very safe and secure. The advantages of staying in the village as opposed to the beaches are many. Prices for everything are half or less in the town and there is a wider selection of restaurants, etc. Much safer and no sand in the beds, 24 hour electricity (beach resorts have generators). You can enjoy interacting with the locals and not only be with other tourists. It goes on and on as far as I'm concerned and past guests have echoed my sentiments.

The Unique Benefits at this House & Cottage
Since I have opened the houses to vacation rentors, it has been a pleasure to meet you in person when I happen to be there when you are and when not, to enjoy reading your remarks in the guest books in the houses. Tulum is growing leaps and bounds. My neighborhood remains much the same on a scale of things. Streets are paved now and fewer pigs roaming the street. Still there are completely abandoned beaches and new ceynotes and lagoons to explore and discover. Most enjoyable though is to touch base again with my wonderful Maya neighbors who continue to teach me so many things.
Owner's Map of Tulum
I discovered Tulum by accident. I had never taken a vacation. One evening a lifelong friend, a school teacher phoned and said she was pouring over a map and had a terrific idea. She wanted me to go with her to Tulum and stay on a white sand beach with our children and explore Maya Ruins for the summer. I was between jobs at the time and she was so insistent and I was too tired to protest so I agreed to go to this off the beaten path place in Mexico she had found on the map. We arrived and it began to look very sketchy that we would find a place to stay. The children were getting antsy and the road was barely a road. There were only 3 resorts on the beach and they were pretty much abandoned and nowhere to stay in town. but we found one abandoned resort on the beach and the owner agreed to rent to us a cabana with a bathroom and we cooked for our kids in their kitchen. We were the only tourists. We returned our rental car to Cancun the next day and spent an idyllic 2 months there on the beach with our children, hitching rides with the local maya into town to buy groceries. This is how I discovered Tulum. We were the only white faces in the area and one woman in town had a refrigerator and she sold ice cubes by the cube! This was quite a treat! We would sit on the curb enjoying our one ice cube before it melted. I found myself returning to Tulum and on about my 3rd trip there, a local Maya friend convinced me I should purchase a part of his property in town and I did. I have been returning every year since for 25 years and continue my love affair with Tulum and continue to discover new things every trip! Donna, Owner of Stone Tree Little Ceynot
