Owner Description

My husband Scott and I fell in love with Cape Charles the first time we visited at the urging of his business partner who had bought a turn of the century fixer upper there about a year or so earlier. We looked and bought the next weekend and the restoration began.
With our 10 year old son happily steaming wall paper and helping dad along side, we cleaned, restored, and/or replaced most every detail of the house including a new kitchen and bath over 4 years of visiting on "working" vacation. Still all along we enjoyed the beach, boating, fishing, local produce an seafood feasts with our friends that brought us down here, our new neighbors and friends, and anyone else we could convince to visit us in Cape Charles in the summer.
I enjoy being a mom, gardening, cooking, artistic endeavors, tennis, horseback riding and pony club with my daughter and am a graphic designer by profession. My husband, Scott, and his partner, Charlie, own and operate Carpenter Beach Construction Co., Inc. that provides high quality design/build, historic restoration, and custom home building services to Loudoun County, Clarke County and the Northern Virginia area. They also own and operate Local Wood, offering at the Berryville shop locally harvested, sawn, dried, custom milled hardwoods.

All in all, this vacation was simply one of our finest. Great quality time with the kids, beautiful atmosphere, and really got to recharge our batteries. Great reading time for the parents and the kids will stay occupied on the beach. I’m sure I left off some fun things but wanted to give you a flavor of an awesome week… One of the greatest features of the Carpenter’s Sunshine House is the huge wrap-around front porch. I would spend my mornings with a nice breeze coming in and sipping my first two cups of coffee for the day. Very peaceful and you will hear the bay/birds chirping. Good Way to start the day! Several rocking chairs and a couch. The evenings would allow for that same breeze, however I might have been sipping a Sam Adams instead of coffee. The dining room in the Carpenter’s Sunshine House is huge. Amy brought some food from the local establishment (Food Lion) and it really was nice to sit down in that room for some meals. Bay Creek Golf Course had some afternoon specials and we really enjoyed the course. Absolutely gorgeous place. There are two courses (Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus) and both are spectacular. If you did not want to hit the course in the afternoon or were looking to just hit a balls at the practice range/putting green, it’s only 10 bucks a person. We rented a golf cart for an hour one day. You can hit the whole town. Kids really enjoyed this…especially the polka dotted one we rented. If you are looking for a night out to eat in Cape Charles, we really liked Kelly’s Pub. I enjoyed the crab cakes and Amy really liked the sandwich that included a burger, crab cake and brie. Kids loved the chicken fingers and meatball subs…

The pizza train that appears to be a big hit. If you miss this opportunity, be sure to grab some pizza from ‘Veneto’s Pizzeria’. That place has delicious pizza and we found ourselves grabbing a couple of those and taking on the beach to watch the sunset a couple of nights. No need to rush to the beach each morning to grab a spot, there was plenty of room for everyone and the folks there are super friendly. You might want to hit one of the stores (Bailey’s Bait & Tackle) and get a schedule of the week’s high tides. The kids seemed to want to be on the beach when the tides were a little higher for the boogie board riding and skim boarding. When the tides are low, that’s when the hunt for hermit crabs and shells took place. I believe we caught over 50 hermit crabs. We had a total blast with a net that I purchased from Bailey’s Bait & Tackle. He caught several minnows (bait for Daddy to go fishing at night) and actually caught a 10-12 inch striped bass in the net. My daughter was totally infatuated with the shells and was on a mission to locate a couple of sand dollar shells before end of week. The kayak was a huge hit. We also had timed competitions for everyone to go around the rocks. That was a total blast. The kids really thought this was Camp Charles, as I had them all out there having way too much fun. We found it easy to place the front of the kayak in the big wagon and I typically just placed the back end on my shoulders as we headed two blocks to the beach. There is an awesome volleyball net right on the beach. We played a little game of plastic horseshoes on the beach…plenty of room….if you have any kites…bring them. There is an awesome breeze right off the bay… one of the mornings, we headed over to the tennis courts (2 blocks away) and had a boys vs. the girls match….good courts and really had a decent workout. There is a really cool playground with a zip line my kids enjoyed. If by chance you wanted your Billy and Mikey to throw the football or lacrosse sticks, there’s a big open soccer field right there. Also, a nice skateboarding area for kids. We brought our bikes down to the beach and found them being used every day. The shops on the main street are quaint and really bring back fond memories of the way good ole fashioned beach stores used to be. We really had some awesome nights catching croakers, flounder and several crabs. The pier is opened 24 hours, free, and does not require a license.
