Romantic Rhododendrun and Bark Getaway with Great Views of Grandfather Mountain
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Built upon the original 'Potato House', this luxurious cottage has beautiful wood beams and bark construction. Boulders surround this unique place, with a private hot tub hidden away from the road, but not from the view! Situated just outside Banner Elk and a neighboring vineyard, this oasis sits amidst a 43 acre farm that has been preserved through a conservation easement. From the front porch, there is a tremendous pastoral view with Grandfather Mountain is the distance. This view is so striking it has been used in commercial calendars. The cottage overlooks a tranquil farm scene with a beautiful barn and pond across the road. Private trails climb behind the cottage to the back side of Beech Mountain, while a unique walk through the Rhododendrum thicket below the pasture lies in front of you. My wife and I were very please with our stay in the Potato House. The furnishings were much newer and nicer than we had expected, and although everything felt top of the line, the cabin also felt cozy and inviting. We spent a lot of time in the VERY nice hot tub and enjoying the gas fireplace in the cellar. The bedrooms have beautiful vaulted ceilings which feel very spacious and each bedroom had a very nice jacuzzi tub as well. The view on our first day there was obscured by the clouds, but when the sun burned them away the view was fantastic. We also enjoyed hiking the trail behind the house and saw a wild turkey on our way up. The town of Banner Elk is only a short 5 minute drive away but the cabin felt like it was far from everything. A great stay. We can't wait to come back for a visit.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My wife an I stay here twice a year - in December and May. It is the most wonderful place in the world and it gives us something to look forward to. One really great thing is that every time we have visited we have noticed the owner had made additions and improvements since the previous visit. The views are wonderful and the house and property itself is all anyone could ask for.Recommended for: Families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thanks Dick! We'll see you in the 2013. Happy Holidays!

This house is completely awesome! My cousin and I are huge fans of high comfort, and we love to do a lot of cooking while on vacation. This house is great for both! The two master suites are ideal for two adults who love their own space -- um, and jacuzzi tubs in each bathroom? That rocks. Love the armchairs in the kitchen and the breakfast nook. Perfect for laptopping and the WiFi works very well -- essential for a partial working vacation. There are 4 flat screen TVs, two porches, and an indoor fireplace. Hiking all around. Love it. The view is beautiful, the house is impeccably clean. This house has the most well-stocked kitchen for cooking that we have ever encountered at a vacation rental. There are even vintage Pyrex baking dishes (in excellent condition)! And a hand mixer for making mashed potatoes! And a grater for zesting lemons! And a blender! And a coffee grinder and 2 coffeemakers! Obviously we are happy. Can't wait to go make a fire in the outdoor fire pit, which has a rotisserie and a cooking grate. Hello, awesome. And then we're going to get in the hot tub. Which faces Grandfather Mountain. Note: This is not a house for more than 4 people. Really. It is cozy and fabulous and all-around awesome, but it is cozy. It is clear that the owners love life and enjoy spending time here. We're super happy to be here and it's only day one of four. HA! Extra points for bark siding on the exterior!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Potato House. We had wonderful weather while there and spent a lot of time exploring the property. The leaves had already turned and the views from the decks were amazing. The home has everything anyone would need. There were televisions in each bedroom, the kitchen and the family room. The furniture was comfortable. From the hot tub you can see Grandfather Mountain. We saw deer and wild turkeys on the property. We would recommend this property to any couple that wants a wonderful getaway.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

If I could add more than five stars, I would! My wife and I had an absolutely perfect long weekend vacation in celebration of our six year wedding anniversary. As promised, the house was amazing. In fact, even with all the raving reviews, it was beyond our expectations. The attention to detail in the construction of the home, from floor to ceiling, is spectacular. The house has everything: hot tub, fire pit, fire place, gas appliances, gas grill, spectacular view of Grandfather Mountain, blackout blinds in the bedrooms for lazy mornings, flat screen satellite TVs in every room, comfortable bedding and mattresses, even heated tile floors in the bathrooms! The furniture is all very unique and comfortable. The house is close to Banner Elk - even closer to the Banner Elk Winery (highly recommend) - close to Boone, close to Blowing Rock. I can't say enough - perfect long weekend. We will be back!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Kyle we are so glad you enjoyed your anniversary in our home. We look forward to you coming back again!

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home! Very clean & just gorgeous! The view was outstanding & truly the best way to see Grandfather Mountain! A very pastoral & scenic location. We loved the attention to detail that the owners gave this home. Fell in love with the elk antlers on the porch & staircase railings. And, having 2 super comfortable king bedrooms was fantastic...great jacuzzi bath! Hated to leave this paradise!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We had a great time at the Potato House...we enjoyed our time just relaxing in the beautiful house, on the deck, and in the hot tub. We enjoyed exploring the barns, pastures, and hiking the path up to the top of the mountain for an amazing view. Saw turkey, deer, chipmunks, groundhogs and fish. Gazed at the view of Grandfather Mountain every day...even when it was rainy, we just pulled the deck chairs under the overhang and watched the rain move in and out. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms like a spa, and the kitchen well supplied, so we had late lazy breakfasts and a few other meals at home. There's plenty to do nearby, like tubing the New River and zipline at Hawksnest. Visit Grandfather Mountain, and Beacon Heights and Rough Ridge overlooks. Be sure not to miss the Linn Cove Viaduct Visitor Center and trail. Good restaurants and even a health food store nearby. We look forward to visiting again!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

About the owner: This property belonged to my Aunt and Uncle who were avid environmentalists. I fell in love with its beauty in college, and helped them establish an easement on the property so the peaceful feeling and incredible view would never be spoiled. I share this "potato house" with you so I can maintain this special place and protect it from development! I also like the local winery and restaurants!
Why the Owner Chose Banner Elk:
This area has a wonderful balance of incredible hiking and excellent entertainment.
