Tired of trying to get away from it all only to find yourself wading through the world's biggest fanny-pack convention? If yes, then consider going off the beaten path with a stay at our oceanfront tower and guest house tucked away in the real Hawaiian jungle.
This rental sits on three acres of pristine oceanfront property located in the Kapoho area of the Puna district, approximately 28 miles from the city of Hilo and 10 miles Southeast of the historical town of Pahoa. The house includes a master bedroom, additional sleeping area, one bath, kitchen and adjoining living room overlooking the lauhala forest and rugged coastline. A detached guest house with its own bedroom, bathroom and kitchen afford additional space and privacy. The ocean and adjoining tide pools make a great spot for secluded swimming, snorkeling, and picnicking. Migrating whales can be seen and heard in the winter.
Utilities are provided by alternative means for a greener, more sustainable off-the-grid experience. Electricity is generated by fourteen photovoltaic panels, an inverter, and a bank of twelve deep cycle batteries. Lighting is provided by compact fluorescent bulbs and all the appliances in the house are energy efficient, including 'on demand' water heaters. Rainwater is collected in a 7,500 gallon catchment tank.
Native wilderness and natural history abound. Native and endangered Hawaiian hawks ('Io) inhabit the lauhala forest bordering the ocean. Nearby are ancient heiaus, fishing grounds and villages, lava flows touching the ocean, geothermally heated warm ponds and Volcanoes National Park.
Whether you seek sanctum or adventure or both, the natural beauty, rugged jungle, and peaceful lodging on this private oceanfront property are here and ready to provide a vacation unlike any other!

Map & Owner's Profile
Hale Hala - Secluded Three Story Oceanfront Jungle Tower
Year Purchased: 1995
Why the Owner Chose Kapoho
We were immediately attracted to the location for its rugged coastline and dynamic daily weather cycles. Although Puna is on the windward (rainier) side of the islnd (and when it rains, it really rains buckets), being on the most Easterly tip gives us a drier, sunnier climate than other sites on the windward coast. What sold us on this spot was its seclusion and intense beauty which has an otherworldy quality.
Initially we pitched a tent on the knoll overlooking the ocean; the creation of the driveway and other landscaping projects soon followed, and gradually over the next six years we built a three story beach house and guest quarters. It has been a challenge to develop the property in the raw jungle, use alternative solar power and have modern comforts while preserving the unique and wild nature of the area.
The Unique Benefits at this Beach House with Guest House
Above all we enjoy the total privacy and immersion in the native Hawaiian environment. The abutting tide pools are always there for swimming and recreation. It's a short trip to towns like Pahoa and Hilo, and many hiking and swimming spots, parks, and things to do are nearby. Living here has taught us how to manage solar power and other resources independently without the aid of city-provided services.
Since moving to town, we most miss falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and hearing the sounds of whales in the winter.
Old logging town with boardwalk sidewalks. Offers groceries, natural food, gasoline, banking, internet cafe, restaurants, urgent care clinic and various stores. Recommendations in house manual.
Volcano summit is 13,800 feet and home to world class obervatories. Visitor center at 9,000 feet. Spec-tacular sunrises and sunsets.
Fresh water lake located in an extinct volcanic crater. Great hiking and swimming...old hawaii.
Wai'opae Reserve offers spec- tacular snorkeling with beautiful fish, fans, corals, turtles. Protected ponds to open ocean.
Volcanically heated warm pond connected to the ocean. Great place to soak and take in the local scene.
Best viewing is a short walk from the end of the road. Watch the lava flow over the pali and into the sea.
Eastern most tip of the island. The juncture of Hwys. 132 and 137 marks the old village of Kapoho, destroyed in the 1960 erruptions. Short hike to nearby heiau.
The major tourist attraction on the island. Visitor center, art center, numerous hikes and activities.
Surf and swim beach with a boat ramp. Camping, picnicing, rest rooms. Rocky shoreline - but very picturesque. Newly rebuilt.
Very scenic spot on cliffs overlooking the ocean. Very nice picnic area (bring beach chairs etc). You can drive to a spot on the ocean - but slowly and carefully as there a bumps, ruts and large roo
Small park with circular path around 'lava tree' formations. Picnic table and restrooms.
Large open market with food stands, fresh locally grown veggies, arts and crafts. Open weekends on Sunday mornings and recently Saturdays too.
Owner's Map of Kapoho
We first visited the island in 1974 and fell in love with its paradisaical environment and easy-going aloha spirit. In 1988 we settled down in the coffee lands above Kona, but as modern urban development expanded in the 1990’s, we started branching out in search of other places to live that still had the feel of old Hawaii.

Four of us enjoyed eight days of jungle living. What a treat! Could have done without the 20 + inches of rain but we still managed to experience the best Puna has to offer - Champagne Ponds, Wai'Ope tide pools, Kalapana with trips up the Hamakua coast to Waipio Valley too! The sunny days were mixed in with lots of good times and we'll certainly be back for more off the grid experiences! The Conrads - Pasadena, California
