My family had a wonderful time during our month-long stay at this home! Upon arrival, the home was extremely clean and inviting. There were plenty of kitchen items to accommodate our needs for the month. Also, there was a substantial amount of towels for all three baths. The yard was absolutely beautiful and great for our standard poodle and toy poodle. The deck was amazing for watching the sunrise and evening meals--plenty of ocean breeze! The owners were very accommodating and easy to work with! The home is close to the beach and town--I rode my bike everywhere! My only complaint is the lack of clothing storage and closet space, but I just lived out of my suitcase! I highly recommend this home!

Not Safe for Family with Small Children
Not Safe for Family with Small Children
The 3rd bedroom of this house is not suitable or safe for younger children. It's separated from the rest of the house by an exterior door, down a flight of deck stairs, through a garage exterior door, through the garage, and inside a separate exterior-style door. My family with a 4-yr-old planned a long weekend getaway with another family that had a 4-yr-old and 1-yr-old. We informed the owner of the ages of the children and said we were looking for a 3-bedroom. She agreed the house was appropriate, and then waited nearly 24 hours to return my call after we arrived and discovered it was not safe to expect young kids to be so far away all night. We made due by having children sleep on couches and mattresses on the floor of the main part of the house, but essentially it was a 2-bedroom for us. I asked that she make some sort of accommodation on the price since it basically only had 2 useable bedrooms, and she said it was not her problem that we chose not to use the basement room. Also, the lack of response when we arrived and learned that the keys that were supposed to be in the kitchen weren’t there was disturbing. It took 5 hours for the owner’s partner to call about the missing keys, and then she told us we would just need to get by without them because the last renters must have taken them. She also advised us not to bother to lock the door, because the area is safe. I mentioned how the floorplan of the house wasn’t safe for our young kids, but that obviously we were going to stay since so many hours had gone by and we'd settled in. I told the partner that I thought it was fair that they make some sort of reduction to the price, considering they knew about our young kids and didn't warn us the kids room wasn't appropriate for us. She said she’d tell the owner, but she didn’t expect she would do that. We enjoyed Port A, and juggled kids’ nap schedules, and sleeping arrangements, making it work. But, the owner was first unresponsive, then outright rude on the phone when I pointed out that I had included the kids’ ages in my rental request. She claimed I was the first person in 40 years to complain, that the kids could sleep on the upstairs couches, and that I could just leave and get a refund. Since this offer was made on the second day of our trip, naturally, we didn’t cut our vacation short. The house was well-equipped, in a good location, but very musty. All of our clothes and hair smelled musty after leaving. I would not recommend this property.

Owner response: First let me respond by saying to characterize this house as not safe for children is totally false, misleading and unfair. For over 40 years this house has been enjoyed by my family and many others, including loads of children. Our reputation precedes us. Please read our many other positive reviews. Second of all, let me quote VRBO's own Review Content Guidelines: "Users cannot post a review or response for the purpose of trying to force an owner or a traveler to do something that the user wants him or her to do. The reviews are for the benefit of future travelers, not to allow one party to THREATEN the other." That is exactly what happened in this case. When this guest arrived and in their first phone call with the office mgr kept THREATENING they were going to give us a bad review if we did not refund a third of the rental because they could not use the downstairs room at all. We had a reservation for 4 adults/3 children. Contrary to their claim, at no time did we have detailed information about the ages of the adult guests, nor the three children. It is not our practice to assign rooms for our guests. We had absolutely no idea of the sleeping arrangement preferences. Certainly two adults and a child could have slept in the downstairs room. They rented a fully useable 3 bedroom home and chose not to use the 3rd bedroom. We offered to find them other accommodations. That was not good enough. They stated they were not going to leave our property no matter what we offered and expected a one-third refund of their stay. At that point we offered a FULL refund without charging for the first night they stayed there if they wanted to leave . And we again, offered to find other accommodations for them. This did not suffice. It was made abundantly clear to us, they were staying there so they could post a negative review if we did not bow to their THREATS. Let me address the lost key issue. It is a perpetual problem keeping up with guests misplacing keys. At no time were they without a key, as they did have the original key provided. In conclusion, my understanding from the numerous phone conversations we had, the intentions were they would give a POSITIVE REVIEW for this house and, in fact, would NOT have claimed it was unsafe for children if we had compensated them by providing a refund according to the terms of their THREATS. And here we are.
1st time in Port A

Really enjoyed our stay! The property was close To the beach....Marine view obstructed by new property being built. Yard was awesome....couldn't believe how often watered since in Austin area we are On drought water restrictions. Rental had lots of nick naks...but nice beach Decor theme. Enjoyed sitting out on deck in morning and having coffee. Would remove rusty shower condiment holder in shower. Do not remember reading in description that bunk Beds were in basement....concern when traveling With small children. Safety issue. Overall....nice property.

First impression... Could have been better
First impression... Could have been better
The owners were very easy to work with. Beach and restaurants were 5 minute drive. Huge yard but better suited for big dogs. My mini schnauzers easily got out of the fence and when we were there the grass was too tall and there were a lot of stickers so really couldn't play with them back there. The deck was wrap around on 3 sides so that was nice and it had wire mesh around the bottom so the dogs would be safe and also had gates on the entrances to deck so you could let your dogs roam free without worry. First impression could have been better. On the deck was an ashtray full of cigarette butts and the kitchen was the first room we walked in and the cleanliness was a big disappointment. The sink had not been clean and there was a dead roach above the sink. I could understand the dead roach if the house had been cleaned days ago but I was told that they had just left hours before our arrival. I also don't think the bathroom floors had been moped because there was a Q-tip on the floor. The king size bed was very comfortable. I'm sure that the owners have addressed the cleaning issues and the overgrown yard with their team. The dog poop greeting us at the entrance to the stairs was a big turn off also. I understand that dogs will roam into your yard and you can't always help that but again with the cleaning crew just leaving it seems like it would have been picked up. All in all though the house is comfortable. But the reason I choosing this house was the willingness of the owners to allow out 3 small dogs to stay. But because of the fence and overgrown yard we really could not take full advantage of the property. We got a bigger place than needed because we thought it would be a fun time with our dogs.

I spent Mother's Day weekend here with my husband, two adult sons and two carin terriers. I really enjoyed being in "old town" where you could easily walk around the island. A bit disappointed that the fenced in yard does not accomodate small dogs. My dogs are 15 lbs and and could easily slip through the slats and some boards in the fence are broken and missing. The palm trees are beautiful but does block any view of the channel. The main part of the house upstairs is very large and comfortable. I did have to rearrange and put away a lot of collectibles before unpacking to make room for my things. There is nowhere to hang your clothes and all the counter space in the kitchen, bedroom and bathrooms are cluttered with collectibles. A lot of mermaids!! Very friendly neighbors and a great area for walking with the dogs.

Great Find in Port A
Great Find in Port A
We have visited Port A regularly for 12 years but have stayed primarily outside of town. This time we wanted to stay close in and to bring our dogs. Because Tropical Getaway allows pets we were able to do both. What a great location, yard for dogs, and view from the house! The layout of the house worked well for our group of 5. Three bathrooms helps a lot. It was very clean and well stocked. Two small drawbacks were very little closet space and no outdoor grill. We walked to the beach and to restaurants which was a lot more fun than driving. Morning coffee on the deck was so nice! Glad we found this place.

Great stay in Port A
Great stay in Port A
Really nice house in Port A. 5 minute drive to most restaurants. We were two couples and two dogs. Having 2 bedrooms, both with their own full bath was perfect. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook (we cooked breakfast each morning). Coffee maker (uses basket style filters), plenty of dishes, pans, utensils, etc. 2 refrigerators was plenty of room for food and drinks. Big patio was perfect for morning coffee and evening drinks. HUGE, fully-fenced backyard was great for the dogs. We could just let them run free in the backyard. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a fantastic time in this condo. There was plenty of room which helped create a relaxing atmosphere. Literally walking distance to the beach and into town. Clean linins, plenty of parking. I could have not asked for anything better than what we got with this Condo. If you are able to rent this property you will not be disappointed!!!!!

Lots of Character
Lots of Character
While our first impression of this property was not particularly favorable, upon contacting the owner and voicing our concerns, they were quick to respond. The one issue they could not correct was repairing the clothes dryer, which did not work. Traveling with 3 boys, and fishing/swimming every day, dirty clothes piled up quickly. I was able to wash clothes at the house, but had to find a laundry mat to dry our clothes; which was inconvenient to say the least. HOWEVER, the house was clean and cheerfully decorated. Would recommend to family and friends.

What a great place to stay! Can't beat the location, close to the beach, marina, restaraunts, and shops. The house was immaculate and comfortable with great decor of the beach! We loved the huge wraparound deck and backyard with all the Palm Trees. Thanks again Tressa and Sherrie! We had a great time and can't wait to come back! Highly recommend this home!
