Very, Very Nice
Came down from SE PA (Lancaster County) to celebrate the 60th birthday for my wife with two other couples. House made a very nice weekend home for six people. Enjoyed the porch - sitting on the porch telling stores at night -- We had a wonderful day at Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. Saw several bald eagles and blue herons up close - amazing! Saw a large turtle stretched out warming itself on a rock in a waterway --head and legs fully extended for a long period of time. None in the group had ever seen anything like that before! The fall weather was fine -- warm and comfortable. We even stumbled upon a schooner show in Cambridge. Boarded several boats and enjoyed free folk music about the sean and the Chesapeake Bay. All in all it was a very nice weekend. Thanks for sharing the house!

The Beauty of the Chesapeake in Winter

We just spent 3 months at this house and really enjoyed it. We are travel writers and were looking for a quiet place to spend the winter months to work on our writing. Chesapeake Country House was perfect for our needs. The house is definitely on the funky/quirky side (it's a 100 year old house that has had a few additions over the years, so the floor plan isn't "cookie cutter subdivision"), but everything worked. The location was terrific. The area is remote and very pretty. Not a lot of car traffic so very quiet. I loved taking walks along the creek and in the nearby neighborhood toward the bay. We saw plenty of wildlife-herds of deer (more than 20!), wild turkeys, foxes, blue heron and even bald eagles soaring above. Jackie, the property manager/housekeeper was very conscientious. The house was clean and ready for us upon arrival, and Jackie stopped by frequently to make sure we had everything we needed.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers.

I am an avid biker and the roads around this home are spectacular. The house itself is charming and clean with plenty of room for the five if us who shared it. The front porch at cocktail time was a truly glorious end of each day. The owner is helpful with her local knowledge of activities and restaurants. Across from the house was Hudson creek where we used their canoe to drift along the shoreline. It was a relaxing and idyllic weekend. Thank you Barbara!! Our dog Barney loved it too!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

This was the worst rental, I have ever been to. The house shows all signs that it is 100 years old. Upon entry was greeted by a stink and found the garbage including discarded food in the kitchen trash can, there was a pile of dirty clothes on the drier and all the bed linens shabby. The master bedroom, guest bedroom and the kid bedroom share a common bathroom and there was a half inch hole in the door between the master bedroom and the bathroom. The kitchen had uneaten snacks by earlier visitors and the whole place was a complete mess. Called up the owner and said we are leaving and need a refund. The owner agreed will refund, but later sent a mail saying the cancellation policy is a 10 day notice so cannot refund. The owner feels returning of the damage deposity and cleaning charages for the unoccupied rental, itself over and above the agreement. All in all a nightmare of an experience and will not recommend this place even to my worst enemy.Owner response: There was a problem with my housekeeper who did not show up in time and I addressed the problem immediately by having another housekeeper come right away and clean the house. I offered these people free rent for that evening and a free meal out while the house was cleaned plus a refund on the cleaning fee. Instead they chose to leave the area and then try to get out of the contract, expecting a full refund, which was not what our contract stipulates, unfortunately. These people were not reasonable and made no effort to work out a solution. I did refund their security deposit and the cleaning fee but the house was left empty on a holiday weekend. Not all guests behave nicely, nor does every housekeeper! This is part of running a business and I do my best to ensure a pleasant stay. By the way, now I have a wonderful and reliable housekeeper, Jackie, who lives 2 houses away.

About the owner: that's me: Barbara Bose, of Chesapeake Country House
Why the Owner Chose Cambridge:
This is a spectacularly beautiful area - unspoiled, serene and historic. Staying there is like pushing the reset button. It is situated on a long peninsula that juts out into the Chesapeake Bay and there is a picturesque creek across the street. I never didn't love the 10-mile drive from town, whatever the weather or season. Keep a keen eye for nature, which abounds - you'll always see something - wild turkeys, rabbits, deer, turtles, geese, ducks, crabs, eagles, osprey, and lots more.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This neighborhood is gorgeous 365 days a year - wake up early and have a cup if coffee on the front porch to witness the sun's glow through the morning mist that rises off the creek. Step outside at night at see a billion stars twinkling overhead, free of any competing city lights. Take a walk in the crisp fall and hear the geese which are settling into their winter rest right nearby. Be reminded by a friendly wave (and almost everyone does) that there are places where people are actually nice.
