Just right for Cedar Key

Guest: Dean and Ella (Albany, Ga.)
Date of Stay: 12/30/11 Review Submitted: 02/04/12

My wife and I started off the new year at the Cypress House. Couldn't have been a better place to relax and recharge. The Cypress House makes you feel right at home. Maureen and Michael's hospitality makes you want to stay. Cedar Key has a magical pull - we're looking forward to our next trip.

Owner response:Thank you for your kind review and compliment. We enjoyed meeting the two of you also, and having you enjoy the comfort of the Cypress House, and the beauty of Cedar Key! Can't think of a better way to start the New Year! I hope we will get to visit with you again some time in the future. It was a blessing to have met you both! God Bless, Maureen

Great value for a quiet, restful vacation!

Guest: TenaB (Kissimmee, FL)
Date of Stay: 10/14/11 Review Submitted: 10/24/11

We went on the weekend of the Seafood Festival (mostly because my husband is a lighthouse freak and that is one of only two weekends that the lighthouse is open to the public) and had a wonderful time. The house is comfortable enough for 6 people, clean and a great value. I especially loved the hammock on the porch! We watched the Seafood Festival parade from the front porch, which was a really fun, home town parade. We wouldn't have even known about it except for the caretakers of the house, John and his wife, coming over to welcome us and let us know the "not to miss" things in town. They were awesome! The boat to Seahorse Key (Tidewater Tours) was fun and we were able to get lots of great pictures of the lighthouse, as well as of the dolphins as they chased us. I loved that the house was close enough to town to walk everywhere, but far enough away to be quiet and peaceful. Wonderful place to visit! Thanks Maureen!

Owner response:The Seafood Festival is a very entertaining time in Cedar Key! So glad you were able to experience the parade, good food, and the light house open to visitors! You described The Cypress House exactly how I feel! It is nice to go about and do things; but also such a comfort to come back to The Cypress House and relax in the hammock! I always hope my guests feel it is their "Home away from Home in Cedar key"! Thank You for Coming & God Bless! Maureen

We had a wonderful family reunion in old Cedar Key, the Cypress House was very convenient! My brother and nephew went fishing on Saturday morning, and came home with redfish and trout, which the chef at the Island Hotel fixed for us that night. A great time!

Owner response:Now red fish is something I have to try yet.It sounds delicious fixed by the Island Hotel! I'm glad you found the Cypress House convenient. When we get there we can walk everywhere, which is a big bonus for us too. Thanks for coming and I am glad your reunion went well! God Bless, Maureen

Taking Our Daughter to College

Guest: Lonesome Mom (Gastonia, North Carolina)
Date of Stay: 08/13/11 Review Submitted: 09/15/11

We recently made our first visit to Cedar Key and the Cypress house the week we took my only child to college at UF for the first time. What a great week we had! We had a few days to spend with our daughter before we "lost" her to college. The after a couple of days of traveling back and forth to Gainesville to settle her in, my husband and I had a couple of days to "recover and face the loss". It was a beautful place to be for all reasons. The house was amazing and so homey and comfortable. We can't wait to go back.

Owner response: So glad you were able to have some rest, relaxation, and adjustment to the new changes in your life. Looking forward to your return to Cedar Key and The Cypress House! We wish your daughter much success in her pursuits at the University of Florida, and a gentle adjustment period for you and your husband!

Family Time

Guest: Mike & Linda (Cleveland, TN)
Date of Stay: 08/02/11 Review Submitted: 08/22/11

My husband and I ended up in Cedar Key over 20 years ago one night for dinner. We were actually staying in Gainesville. We had talked about coming back to Cedar Key for an actual visit for a long time. We finally made it. This time it was with our 16 year old son. My husband is retired now, and my son is in school, but I still work and really needed some time to relax. Coming to Cedar Key was one of our better ideas. Even with the relaxing atmosphere my 16 year old enjoyed himself as well. The house was very nice and in a very good location and close to everything. Everything was clean and neat. Even though it was August and very hot we still enjoyed coffee on the front porch in the early mornings and my son enjoyed the hammock. Some outdoor ceiling fans on the porch would have been ideal. We did some fishing, shopping, sightseeing, eating and relaxing. I was really glad we came back for an actual visit this time. Hopefully it won't take 20 years to get back!

Owner response:Thank you for such a nice review! Also I am glad you finally were able to spend more time in Cedar Key! The Cypress House greets you with a "welcome home" feeling, after a day of activities. The large wrap around porch also is a great place to relax. Hammock's and Cedar Key go together. God Bless, Maureen

A most relaxing home

Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 07/01/11

This was our third trip back to Cedar Key for my wife and I. This time we took our 4 children and first time at the Cypress House. We all had a great time. The kids rode thier bikes all around and we walked to dock street for some good food and shopping, It was nice to come back to this house to sit on the front porch or relax in the hammock. We did not want to leave and should have rented it for the whole week. This house was our home for a short time and it was awesome. We will be back !

Owner response:Reading of your family's enjoyment of "The Cypress House" is prayers answered! I couldn't be happier knowing all of you had a good time and enjoyed The Cypress House. We will be glad to have you back! Your request months in advance assured the dates you needed. I'm glad you did because this relatively new listing is becoming a favorite. Our goal is to make "The Cypress House" your "Home Away From Home In Cedar Key!". God Bless, Maureen

Great Memorial Day Weekend

Guest: Nanny (Lakeland, FL)
Date of Stay: 05/27/11 Review Submitted: 06/08/11

My family and I had a great Memorial Day Weekend at Cypress House. We found the house to be very clean and well maintained and comfortable for our family and offered everything we needed. We really enjoyed the large wrap around porch with the hammock and adirondack chairs. Everything was in walking distance ... the boat docks, beach, restaurants, fishing, a small market, antique shops and boutiques. Just what you need for a quiet and relaxing get away. Maureen was very accommodating and anxious that we enjoy our stay. We hope to return.

Owner response:Thank you for your kind review! One of the great benefits of vacation rentals is meeting wonderful people., like you. This is our second summer and are going into our third winter. We have some return families, who have "The Cypress House On 1st Street", their ,"Home Away From Home". I was glad to read you are interested in returning also, and for all the fun reasons you listed are mine also! God Bless, Maureen

Wonderful week

Guest: Susan (Milton, FL)
Date of Stay: 04/01/11 Review Submitted: 04/13/11

Our week at the Cypress House was wonderful. The weather was perfect and each day we had cool breezes that led to long stays on the porch enjoying the views, relaxing, reading and lying in the hammock. Matter of fact when it came time for our 9 month old grandson's nap we placed him in the hammock with us and off to sleep he went. I spent my summers with my grandmother in Cedar Key until my latter teenage years. Our stay allowed me to reconnect with my love for the island and brought back many fond memories. It also allowed me to share that love and create new memories with our loved ones. Matter of fact it was suggested we make this an annual event. The house and location couldn't have been any better. We'll definitely be back and appreciate so much Maureen's help in making our stay possible and do enjoyable.

Owner response:It's always a great pleasure to read of our guests enjoyable stay at The Cypress House! I'm certainly glad your's went so well! Cedar Key certainly lends to that relaxed atmosphere we all need time to time. The Cypress House also continues this feeling whether in the house or resting on the front porch hammock. The image of your grandson sleeping is very precious! Thanks for sharing this with us! God Bless, Maureen

We found Cypress House to be just what the doctor ordered. It was comfortable and made us feel at home. Every morning we sat on the porch, drank our coffee, and watched the dolphins. The listing description was accurate. The property was clean, and the caretakers were so helpful in every respect. We loved Gay Lynn's chowder! We would definitely recommend this property to everyone. Our only complaint was in the restaurants. We only found a couple that we liked. One of the nicest things for us was that we could walk to almost anywhere of interest in Cedar Key. We plan to return in the near future.

Owner response:Hope you can make it back! Thank you for your kind and generous review!

Great Cedar Key getaway

Guest: Paula (Atlanta)
Date of Stay: 10/10/10 Review Submitted: 10/18/10

My husband and I were looking for a mini vacation in a "non-touristy" Florida town. Cedar Key fit the bill and the Cypress House did not disappoint! The house was attractive, roomy, very clean and had everything we needed for comfort. We spent alot of time on the front porch, in the adirondack chairs and hammock, reading, having a glass of wine and just looking out at the gulf. We did alot of walking in the town which was a couple of blocks away. It has some cute shops, a few grocery stores and a few restaurants that were all good. Like I said, we were looking for a place that was laid back and non-commercialized....and we got it. Maureen, the owner, was very responsive prior to our arrival and I will have to say that we really didn't need to contact her after we got here except to tell her how awesome everything was. Oh yes, we also feel that the home was an exceptional value for the cost. We look forward to returning to the Cypress House.

Perfect Home, Perfect Week in Cedar Key!

Guest: Linda and Bob (Baltimore, MD)
Date of Stay: 09/15/10 Review Submitted: 02/27/11

Our first stay in Cedar Key was at The Cypress House in September, 2010 and we can't imagine staying anywhere else on our future trips! My husband, a guy who loves Hyatt Hotel Resorts, can’t wait to go back to Cypress House again. This lovely home feels like just that - a warm, inviting, comfortable home. The owners have thought of everything one might need or desire. In addition to making the BEST Seafood Chowder we have ever eaten (ANYWHERE), GayLynne recommended Captain Doug's Island Tour, and she was right on target. Capt. Doug is very knowledgeable about the abundant wildlife in this nature’s paradise. We even witnessed a “dolphin fish roundup” complete with the dolphins jumping for the tarpon they “caught”! What a thrill! Other friendly dolphin accompanied us, surfing the wake and playing at the bow on the ride back to Cedar Key. We also kayaked to Atsenie Otie – beautiful. We enjoyed the art shops and the well-done historical museum. The Market is adequate – it was nice to relax in the adirondack's while waiting for our steak to grill on the porch of Cypress House. We can’t wait to return to the relaxing pace of Cedar Key and the warm, homey welcome of Cypress House.

Owner response:Thank you for your kind review of "The Cypress House" and of Cedar Key! It seems you like it there as much as we do. Always glad to read of our guests happy vacation time. We'll be glad to have you back on the front porch adirondak chairs, when you're ready! God Bless, Maureen

Wonderful House, Wonderful views and Wonderful Island Experience

Guest: Ellen (Winston-Salem, North Carolin)
Date of Stay: 08/06/10 Review Submitted: 08/19/10

Never had a better vacation ! The home was perfect for this 80th birthday celebration for my Mom. We called this house " the quiet house " and the house across the street we rented " the party house". We were actually I thought, going to have to draw names to see who was going to sleep at "the quiet house" !!! My husband and I won out having the bedroom upstairs with the new air conditioning unit, which we only had to use at night. It was wonderful having the COOL room upstairs as my FL relatives leave the thermostat on 78 all year round. (I am after all a North Carolina girl). The other downstairs bedroom was my Moms and her husband of 27 years. Her husband retires almost before dark and the house is very shaded and makes resting easy. We would walk HOME late at night with Mom, after playing her favorite games and a set of children, some grandchildren and some nieces as they all wanted to take turns sleeping in" the quiet house". We rotated this experience quite well and no one was slighted. The members of "the quiet house" were always up hours before the party house having, a second, or third cup of coffee on the perfect porch. The porch was well shaded by the oak trees, which really must be 500 years old. They really have a character about them, we analyzed them every morning and they us !! We would watch the boats leave early going out to the gulf for a bounty of fish. We also were doing the same on selected days and ate very well mind you from the gulf waters. We always ate breakfast at the quiet house and prepared dinner on the wonderful large gas grill on the side of the porch. The men would do the grill cooking while the women of the house would enjoy the hammock. Even though there was such an age difference between cousins, they got along fine and the only little disagreements was who was going to drive the golf cart and who was going to ride !! Plenty of shopping which entertained the kids and they would always sneak out for chicken tenders...I think kids are just raised on that food item now !! The adults also got a chance to shop and ride, the library has internet access and great maps and free information. Learned alot about the island from the locals, everyone friendly. Ate at the Island Room for my sister in laws birthday and had a wonderful meal. The food was great, and the view of the water very quieting for this large crowd. We loved walking the trails and wildlife watching. STAY HERE, IT IS PERFECT, WE LOVED IT !!!!

Owner response:Dear Ellen, So glad your family reunion was a success. You worked very hard coordinating your mom's 80th birthday! Thank you for sharing your experience in Cedar Key and your relatives request for The Cypress House ! God Bless & you are all welcomed back anytime ! Maureen

Just stayed a week at The Cypress House on 1st Street. Surely the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. Our whole family enjoyed our stay. The house is exactly as pictured, very comfortable and spacious. Everything we needed was provided. It was so nice to be able to walk everywhere. I really enjoyed the shopping and dining out in Cedar Key. I spent a lot of time on the front porch reading and enjoying the view. I would definitley recommend this home to anyone who wants to get away from it all! I especially enjoyed the art stores and my husband loved having such close access to take his boat out fishing. Great place to stay! Thanks to Maureen and John, very nice owner and caretaker.

Owner response:Dear Jana, Your preference of art and your husbands of fishing is exactly the same for my husband and I !!! Thank you for mentioning John's part in making your stay special. When we come into Cedar Key, John's hospitality sets the mood for a very welcoming visit. Thank you for being a guest at The Cypress House and we are very glad you enjoyed your stay! My husband and I wanted to get away some place close, small, and on the coast. What a great time we had at such a beautiful house! We couldn't have asked for anything better. Everything we wanted to do we could walk to, down the road to see sunsets or the other way to eat or rent a skiff! The house was so much more spacious than the pictures revealed. Maureen, thanks so much for sharing with us and being such a joy to talk with! Thanks to John and his wife for the recommendations also. If you love fruit smoothies be sure to visit Kona Joe's, they have a wonderful Mango/Pineapple that I had to have every day! We look forward to coming again!!

Owner response:So Glad you had a great time. I'll have to try one of those Mango/Pineapple smoothies! Thank you also for being great guests! God Bless, Maureen

One of the best vacations I have ever had

Guest: Joan A. (Clermont, FL (west of Orlando))
Date of Stay: 06/04/10 Review Submitted: 06/08/10

A mug at the Cypress House expressed some of my sentiment about this trip: "My heart will always be in a cottage by the sea." The Cypress House and Cedar Key touched me. My heart is still there even though I have left. Our son and his girlfriend visited it first in February after a recommendatiion by a coworker in Melbourne. They said so much about Cedar Key that I had to visit it for myself. I love VRBO and Home Away websites and so I searched for a place to stay. I came upon Cypress House and because I love rustic looking homes, I became interested in this one. It sounded so good that I decided to spend a long weekend there with my husband, two sons and soon to be daughter-in-law. I looked at the pictures on the web site almost every night in anticipation of our trip. We loved the house. It was so spacious and homey. There were books and DVD's in case we needed something to do. I enjoyed browsing through the books. The porch and hammock were well used. We had breakfast on Sunday at the Rusty Rim on Dock Street which was delicious as well as affordable with a nice view of the Gulf. On Saturday we took a pontoon excursion from Island Hopper to collect sand dollars. It was a memorable trip. We collected 54 sand dollars and saw dolphins jumping on the way back. Sand dollar excursions are only April through October, weather permitting. Dock Street was fun with all it's little shops. Everyone enjoyed this trip. We can not wait to go back. It is only one and a half hours from Clermont FL where we live. Maureen personally called me after she got my check and I loved talking to her. I pray that the oil spill and hurricanes will not harm this gem of a town that we grew to love so quickly. If you are looking to get away from it all and live the simple life for a few days, I recommend the Cypress House at Cedar Key. But check availability first, because we may be there again! --- Joan, Bob, Robby, Richard, and Jessica

Owner response:Dear Joan, Thank you for your great review ! It is always a pleasure to know the guests enjoyed their vacation! I didn't know that about the sand dollars and will try to schedule a trip on the Island Hopper. Looking forward to this being "your home away from home", in Cedar Key. Blessings to you and your family! Maureen

The Cypress House on 1st Street

Guest: Em and Tom (Niceville, FL )
Date of Stay: 05/10/10 Review Submitted: 05/28/10

Our group had a very special week in the Cypress House at Cedar Key. We could hardly drag ourselves off the delightful front porch, to do other activities! We grew lazier with each passing day, just sitting and watching the friendly bikers, walkers and golf cart riders going by (and waving at us)! However, we were in such close proximity to shops, restaurants and the marina, that we walked and biked a lot. We also launched our boat and left it at the city marina overnight. The beds were so comfortable, that everyone slept well and then prepared breakfasts in the large kitchen each morning. We grilled our dinners on the nice large grill provided, Cypress House is cozy, comfortable and well appointed. The location is just perfect. What a lazy, relaxed location for a vacation. We felt as if we were on a Bahamian island. Group from Niceville, FL.

Owner response:Emily's review so fits the feeling and experience I have also when visiting The Cypress House in Cedar Key. Thank you Emily for wording it so perfectly!, I love being there, and when we are not able, it is with great enjoyment to know other's like Emily & Tom are enjoying their stay in "The Cypress House, on 1st Street"! Our little family wanted to try an alternetive to staying in Gainsville during our daughters graduation and got pleasantly surprised by Cedar Key overall. We had never been there before and the beautiful surroundings came as a surprise. Sitting out on the front porch with gentle sea breeze and nice scenery made our stay wonderful. The house is nice with a great kitchen that has a island or bar in the middle. We thank you very much for a wonderful time. Hope to stay with you again. Family Olaf.

A weekend that lasted 6 days

Guest: Widgetser (Ocoee, FL)
Date of Stay: 04/09/10 Review Submitted: 04/18/10

We went for a weekend and stayed longer, thanks to the easy going nature of the owner and the crew that maintains the place; thank-you again, Maureen, John and Gaylynne. We had a brilliant time. This Beautiful house is large enough that it handled the 5 of us with ease. If you need to unwind, this is the place. The Adirondack chairs on the large porch are so comfortable, you can sit on the porch for hours, watching the traffic drive by, wave to all who walk by and watch the ocean and the sailboats as they sail by. They have a beautiful hammock that rocks you to sleep. The top priority of this house is to think of everything you might possible want, including a book that shows you around town. In the Bathrooms you can find hairdryers, towels, hand soap, etc…. In the Kitchen, they have stocked it up with a big 12 cup coffee pot, a great refrigerator with automatic ice machine, hand towels, hand soap, plates, silverware, a bowl for chips and dips,etc.... They have a full stock laundry area. A large gas grill, which we took advantage of just about everyday. The House is located 5 minutes from Main Street, stores and Restaurant Docks. It was easier to walk than drive. Be aware that you have minimal access to the internet on the island. If you fish, check out the Florida laws to see if you will need a license. We went to City Hall to get one, it was very easy. I know that our little party wants to come back in October for another stay.

Owner response:It was a fun visit for Mary and her friends and I was glad each time they asked to stay longer. Also they are return guests at The Cypress House and have given me helpful suggestions for making their visit more comfortable. The blender was added by Mary's request to save her from bringing the one she had from home. I love when details are asked to make the house more comfortable. My aim is to make your visit to The Cypress House, as comfortable and pleasant as possible. God Bless! Maureen

We almost rented a little bungalow style house but decided against it because there was only one bath. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that the Cypress House is right across the street from the bungalow but with much better accomadations. We were extremely pleased with our stay.

One of the unique features on 1st Street are the 500 year old oak trees in the front yard. They have such character and are beautiful to look at from the front porch. The Gulf waters bring a relaxing serenity . Beside the location of Cedar Key, it is the people there that make it so special! Thank you for coming to The Cypress House! Thank you for your review and for coming! Maureen

We want to thank you for providing such a beautiful place to stay in for our vacation. Everything was first class and also anything you would need was supplied including a needle and thread. Our special thanks for John who called several times to make sure we were on our way and everything was ok during our stay. The cottage was very convenient to everything and we totally fell in love with Cedar Key.

Owner response:Dear Fred & Jane, You had scheduled your vacation, well in advance, which allowed us communications over several months. It was always a pleasure to answer your questions and share my love for Cedar Key and The Cypress House. I'm so glad the house met your expectations and thank you for your kind review. God Bless, Maureen

I was fortunate to be a guest at this fabulous property October 23 - October 25, 2009. This house was very comfortable and welcoming, and the views were fantastic. I can't wait to return.

Owner response:Dear Teresa, Thank you for your review and coming back to The Cypress House! It is always nice corresponding with you! Many Blessings, Maureen

Three of us had a girlfriends weekend away from our busy work environments and the hustle & bustle of busy Jacksonville. The Cypress House and Cedar Key was the perfect environment to relax and take life easy. The town was fun to explore, then coming back to just sit on the porch with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down over the Gulf was the best way to end the day. The house was very roomy and comfortable. It is definitely a "come back to" place!

"The Cypress House On 1st Street" has many advantages for a perfect stay in Cedar Key. If you would like to bring your boat or kayak, we are a few blocks from the fishing dock. The house has a long drive along side of the house and ample parking in front of the house for a small boat. There are about 6-7 small steps to the front porch. The first floor has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom, laundry room, living room & kitchen. The open and wide design could accommodate most guests with limited mobility. Those escaping the colder north will love the location. Once you are settled into the house, you can stroll around town, visit the shops, eat at the seafood restaurants, or just sit on the porch in the adirondak chairs or swing in the hammock, with views of the Gulf of Mexico across the street. Our hope is that you have a restful, wonderful, blessed vacation ! My husband loves to fish the waters. I love to oil paint the scenery, read relax, shop and walk, when visiting.

My husband, my grandaughter, and myself just spent a week at your home in cedar keys. We loved it and didn't want to leave. We spent every morning and evening on the large porch , very relaxing. Your house is very homey and comfortable and so close to everything. We made many great memories. Thanks for everything . The Collins Family

My husband and I, plus my son and his family, stayed at Cypress House in June. Accommodations were perfect for a large number of people. The adults and 2 children had their own rooms, which worked out very well. The kids loved playing on the stairs pretending it was a fort. Now they want a two story house! The kitchen/dining set-up was great for meals. The feel of the house is casual but very adequate to your needs. Thanks for your hospitality Maureen! We always have a great time in Cedar Key.

We were so pleased with our stay in this home. Our two children had a blast and mommy loved laying in the hammock with a glass of wine at sunset! We had two other families that went to the island that weekend and stayed in a hotel when they came to the house they were amazed at the size of it and the amazing price we had paid....less than their rooms! It rained the weekend that we were there but it did not matter we had a cook out on the covered porch with our friends and the kids played...it was great! I couldn't have asked for a better time or a better place to stay! Thank you so much, we will be there again soon! Judy
