Come and escape it all!

Majestic eagles, white swans, ducks, chipmunks and squirrels are just a few of the wildlife you'll enjoy watching from the wrap around deck overlooking 120' of extremely private waterfront. Listen to the loons call as you enjoy your coffee in the mornings. Take a boat trip around East Lake and catch an abundance of fish! The Lake has pike, perch, bluegills, and bass. Our shoreline starts out ankle depth and sandy for the little ones, and gradually gets deeper about 12' from shore. Swim out to the carpeted raft and sunbathe the afternoon away. You can also get adventurous and do some water skiing, boating, sailing or canoeing on our all sports lake. There's a public boat launch for your vessel, and we have a 16' dock for convenience. Or, you can rent a 14' boat with a 3 hp motor for $30/day or $150/week and have it delivered to the dock for free! Just bring your bait and your pole. For the hiking enthusiast, there are endless miles of trails to discover. Ask about the 23 waterfalls you can explore - all within 45 minutes of the Retreat. In the winter, ride three minutes to gas up and hit the hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails that are waiting! Or, spend a day ice fishing on the lake. It's simply excellent all season fun.

This home is fully stocked with everything you'll need - from towels and linens to pots and pans. If you don't feel like cooking - there is a family restaurant within walking distance. You can also walk to the mini grocery store and gas station nearby. There are four bedrooms in total. Two of the bedrooms have Queen beds, one bedroom holds 2 bunk beds that have a double bed on the bottom and a twin bed on top, and our newest addition to the home is the fourth bedroom - a large "Slumberjack Suite" complete with a new king log bed, rustic furnishings and your own private fireplace. This bedroom is located in the lower level - making it darker, cooler and quieter for those who want to catch up on their zzzz's. All of the beds have new, quality, comfortable mattresses and linens.

If you're in the mood for sightseeing - there is plenty to do! Take in Taquamenon Falls, Oswalds Bear Ranch, The Tahquamenon Logging Museum, The Toonerville Trolley, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum or the Crisp Point Lighthouse - just to name a few. Or, hop a fairy to Mackinac Island - it's only a 60 minute drive from the house.

At the end of the day, lay on one of the lounge chairs down by the lake and savor the gorgeous sunset. Then finish off with a cozy bonfire where you'll recount all of the memories made in this wonderful northern retreat.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

Our names are Randy and Barb Graham. We've owned the East Lake Retreat since 2003. We actually got married right in our home, and took advantage of the gorgeous setting for our wedding pictures! We are avid outdoors people - enjoying boating, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and all that nature has to offer.

Why the Owner Chose Newberry

The UP is simply the perfect place to be to enjoy the outdoors. We live in a larger city down state, and we just can't WAIT to get back to our East Lake Retreat! It's either adventure or relaxation at it's best - just whatever you're in the mood for! If you're looking to shop at the big malls, this is NOT the place to visit. :-)

The Unique Benefits of this House

Fishing, relaxing by the water and night time bonfires are our all time favorite things to do at the retreat. In the winter, it's our snowmobile heaven! We've made many fabulous memories here, and we hope that we can pass the opportunity along for you and your family to make your memories here too!

Perfect Family Getaway!

Guest: Kate (Beulah MI)
Date of Stay: 01/27/12 Review Submitted: 01/31/12

We stayed at Retreat on East Lake for a 50th wedding anniversary getaway. The house was a perfect place to stay and enjoy time together as a family. Our ages ranged from 5 to 71 and there was something for everyone to do. The kids enjoyed the games and snow shoeing around the property. The adults enjoyed xc skiing on the frozen East Lake and relaxing in front of the fire. One of the guests is a professional chef and found everything she needed in the kitchen to make us amazing meals. We also had a guest with us who has mobility issues and she had no problems navigating around the well-maintained house. The kids are already planning our return visit. The owner was easy to work with and very helpful recommending dining choices in the area. The owners also surprised us with a flower arrangement honoring the 50th wedding anniversary!

Owner response:We were very honored that this family chose the East Lake Retreat to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary! What a special time for all of them! We hope they return to the East Lake Retreat very soon.

Simply Beautiful! A true 'home' away from home...

Guest: Melissa (Ann Arbor)
Date of Stay: 07/11/11 Review Submitted: 07/26/11

Words can simply not describe how much we enjoyed our stay at East Lake retreat. This home is beautiful, homely and impeccably clean. The view from the deck, out over the lake, was something we enjoyed each and every day! From grilling on the deck to fishing in the lake with the kids, to feeding the ducks.... this was truly a most memorable vacation with our two children! This home is within easy reach of many sights - we enjoyed Tahquamenon falls, pictured rocks and Mackinaw Island to name but a few. However, we so enjoyed the property we set time aside just to spend quality time as a family - our son even learnt to ride his bike without training wheels in the safe area out front! We really enjoyed the feeling of being out in the country, and are very appreciative for the recommendation of taking our bikes with! We enjoyed riding our mountain bikes around the lake! We also hired kayaks for a day from a friendly person in town. We found the owners extremely helpful and welcoming. I highly recommend this property and will definitely do so to our friends. We truly hope to return! Thank you for an amazing week!

Owner response:This family was an absolute delight! We find it so endearing that their son learned how to ride with no training wheels at our beautiful Retreat! What great memories! We hope to see you all again. Thank you!

Beautiful Lake Home

Guest: Anne (North Carolina)
Date of Stay: 07/03/11 Review Submitted: 07/11/11

Review: We really enjoyed our stay in this home. It is a beautiful home and well maintained. Everything was so clean. This home is located so that we were able to go for day trips and short trips during our stay. However our favorite parts were swimming in the lake, boating on the lake and fishing in the lake. We very much enjoyed our visit to the Bear Ranch. It is a beautiful home and a pleasure to work with Barb. She was very helpful since we really didn't know the area. She patiently answered all of our questions. I would recommend this home to others.

Owner response:We love working with all of our guests to make sure they get the most out of their vacations! We realize that many times, our guests are coming from other states, and this may be their first trip to Michigan or the Upper Peninsula. The East Lake Retreat is perfectly situated for many fun day trips. This family was a pleasure to work with, and we certainly hope to see them again!

Beautiful!

Guest: Dave, Kim & the girls (Valparaiso, IN)
Date of Stay: 07/24/10 Review Submitted: 11/30/10

Two teenage girls without cell phone signal, what more could a parent ask for? No complaints from them either after the first few minutes. The house is absolutely gorgeous and there is just not enough room here to list all of the amenities. The pictures here can not capture the beauty of the home. The owners thought of everything and I would definitely recommend staying here to friends and family. The home was very clean and comfortable. Everyone fully enjoyed themselves and we are all hoping to return again next July. Oswald's Bear Ranch was a lot of fun. Tahquamenon Falls was breathtaking. We loved feeding the ducks every morning & it was fun watching the otter swim about. The property is very quiet and the lake was not overcrowded. I would highly recommend this home if you are looking for a private, peaceful getaway but still near attractions.

Owner response:Dave and Kim were, without a doubt, very memorable guests, and we loved having them at the Retreat! They had fantastic energy, and really took in the special gifts of the lake. Kim shared some awesome pictures that she had taken, and I still enjoy them today as my screensaver at the office! (Thanks, Kim!) We look forward to having them return!

What a great place to stay

Guest: UP lover (Livonia, MI)
Date of Stay: 08/21/10 Review Submitted: 09/07/10

We had a most enjoyable stay at this property. The location and condition of the property on the website was accurate and complete but we found the home to be even nicer and more well equiped than described. The property was very neat and everything was in good working order. If we return to the area we would definitely consider a repeat stay and would recommend this property to others. The location is conveniently located and the owner was very helpful in recommending interesting activities in the area. There may be some good restaurants nearby but we chose to grill at the retreat and enjoy the beautiful view from the deck instead. Overall this is a great place to vacation with a family.

Owner response:Our goal is to help our guests enjoy their vacation in any way possible! We love to answer questions about the area and offer suggestions to those who may have questions about activities. This family was a delight to have at our Retreat, and we hope to see them again in the future!

Perfect

Guest: Paige & Chris (Sheboygan Falls, WI)
Date of Stay: 06/21/10 Review Submitted: 07/01/10

This home is amazing! The pictures do not do it justice. Clean, clean, clean! This property is impeccably kept. My husband and I have four kids ranging in ages from 9-12 and we had more than enough room for everyone. Not to mention that the "slumberjack" suite allowed us a little "couple away time" from the kids. I haven't slept better in months. There was plenty to do for the kids at the property, from board games, to DVD players with movies, to fishing off the dock, to the water trampoline. Add to the package that Newberry is a reasonable drive to many, many major attractions in the U.P and there is nothing about this property I could complain about! This time we only ventured to the Soo Locks, Taquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point. We would have spent more time at the property, unfortunately the weather did not always cooperate! If you question how well this property could be a fit for your family...take this into consideration...all 4 kids are begging to return, including the usually very hard to please child with Asperger's Syndrome - a child normally enthralled with video games and movies (only movies here...no video games!) wants to return to the property! Barb was very easy and friendly to work with. We had a "surprise" vacation time that worked for us and on very short notice Barb made it happen. With all the stress we had at work the week prior to vacation, booking this property was not one of those stresses. Next time, and there will be a next time...we will plan days at the property just to enjoy the property more itself - it really is that comfortable and inviting.

Owner response:Paige and her family were a delight to have at the Retreat! We are so thrilled that the kids had a great time, and we are happy to have been able to offer mom and dad some quiet time away from it all in the Slumberjack Suite. We look forward to seeing you all again!!
