Aloha

Please allow me one paragraph to describe why our home is one of the most desirable units at Puu Poa. Most important is location. Unit 211 is on the far right side of the complex and faces almost due west, thus having the best Bali Hai view. You can enjoy Bali Hai sunsets while dining, reclining in the living room, seated in the atrium, lying in the master bed, or of course, while relaxing on the lanai. (Each year two or three honeymoon couples are referred to our unit, and the primary reason is the view.) We are one of only fourteen owners to have an enclosed atrium and thus an additional 250 sq. ft. of living area. Our recent remodels include a fully appointed granite kitchen, newly designed master bath, and tile flooring throughout. Our unit is on the second floor which is the easiest to access. The first and fourth floors require a second set of stairs. As you read this description and those of other condos, please remember that the “postcard” Bali Hai view is available from the interior of only a few of the units and this greatly adds to the beauty and charm you will experience on your island vacation. And we accept payment through Paypal.

The three couches in the living room and atrium allow the vacationer the ability to lie down and read a book, listen to a CD, watch sports in Hi-Def, or just gaze out at the ocean and Bali Hai. If it sprinkles, you can stare at a rainbow. If it’s sunny, you can enjoy the tropical breeze that flows through the jalousie windows, which are in each room. (There are three ceiling fans to aid with the flow.) If it’s too sunny, you can draw the special shades that filter the sun and yet don’t hide the view. For those who must stay connected, there is DSL and WiFi.

The entry doors to this 2,000 sq.ft. condo were carved by James Hargraves, a nationally known Kauai glass artist. They lead into a sun room/atrium and a large living room. There is a 400 sq.ft. lanai with table, lounges and BBQ, which adjoins the living room. The master bedroom (with king bed) is open to the ocean view, but it can be separated from the atrium by moving a bank of plantation shutters. The large second bedroom has a queen bed and its own separate bath. The washer and dryer are in this bathroom. The fully equipped kitchen with maple cabinets and granite countertops, sits behind the living room and large dining room. In July you can be seated at the dining room table or preparing a late dinner in the kitchen and watch the sun set directly in front of you.

Puu Poa is located on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It adjoins the five-star St Regis Hotel (summer ’09) at the northeast tip of Hanalei Bay. The complex overlooks Hideaway Beach, which is accessible by a path separating Puu Poa from the hotel property. (Hideaways is considered one of the two finest snorkeling beaches on the island.)

Because Puu Poa is oceanfront, our home has 180 degree view to the horizon. Use the telescope to watch surfers, ships and boats, schools of dolphins, many varieties of Hawaiian birds and the migration of whales from December through April. And every night there is a fantastic sunset. Each night since the Princeville Hotel opened, crowds gather in the ninth floor lounge to enjoy and photograph the scenes available in our living room.

The Puu Poa complex has a heated pool that overlooks the Pacific and a beautifully maintained tennis court. The #1 golf course in Hawaii, the Prince, is two miles away. The hotel spa is currently located at the course. The exercise facilities including weight room sit behind a glass wall with a magnificent view of the golf course and the ocean beyond. The spa is complimentary with a round of golf and otherwise is available for a daily or weekly fee. The #8 golf course in Hawaii, the Makai, is half a mile away. It has three nines, two of which have spectacular ocean vistas on several holes. The hotel tennis center is located at the club house.

The north shore of Kauai is home to many of Hawaii’s best beaches including Ke’e (start of the Kalalau Trail), a scenic 20 minute ride to the west, and Kalihiwai is about ten minutes to the east. (Our condo has mats, coolers, and water sports equipment to make your day at the beach easier.) The other beaches lie in between as does Queen Emma’s Bath. This is an ocean adjoining lava swimming hole located in Princeville. A two minute drive followed by a ten minute hike will produce an unforgettable experience.

Many other sporting activities are available within five minutes. These include scuba diving, kayaking on the Hanalei River, canoeing on the ocean, surfing (lessons), horseback riding, and biking. For those who enjoy hiking, the path to the Napali Coast begins at Ke’e Beach. The Kalalau Trail may be taken for a day trip or longer. It is one of the most wonderful walks in the world (waterfalls, cliffs, streams, and deserted beaches). Joggers will enjoy the four mile run up to the top of Princeville and back.

One of the nation’s six tropical botanical gardens (Limahuli) is just fifteen minutes to the west at Makana Peak (Bali Hai). The private Na Aina Kai Garden has daily tours and is located just past Kilauea, about fifteen minutes east. Helicopter tours of the Garden Isle are available from several locations including the Princeville airport.

Boutique shopping and restaurants are available in Hanalei, Kilauea, the hotel, and the Princeville Shopping Center, which is just five minutes away. The Center also has a Foodland grocery market, Lappert’s ice cream shop, Chevron station, banks, post office, hardware store and several realtors.

I hope our description will convince you to give the north shore of Kauai a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Mahalo,
Ron and Gloria Burke

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1999

Gloria and I were born and raised in San Francisco. We moved 35 miles south, to Los Altos, in 1972 and raised our two children there. Our daughter, Veronica, and her husband, Andy, live about a mile away with their three children. Our son, Ken, works at SalesForce dot com and lives in San Francisco. We both retired two years ago and now spend time enjoying golf, travel, volunteering, and our grand children.

Why the Owner Chose Puu Poa

We first came to Kauai in 1984 and returned several time over the next 15 years. In 1999 we stayed at Pali Ke Kua in a unit with straight on Bali Hai views. During the vacation we visited a real estate office to ask if any of the PKK units were for sale. They weren't. Two months later we received a call about Puu Poa 211. We asked if you could see Bali Hai from the master bedroom. Answer: yes. We bought it sight unseen.

The Unique Benefits of this Condo

We visit 2-3 times a year and split our time between maintenance and fun. On the fun side there is daily golf, the beaches, shopping, jogging around Princeville, island tours, and so much more. We've been upgrading our unit since we moved in: tile throughout, atrium, new kitchen, new master bath, furniture, and window coverings. We spend time cleaning, painting, caring for the lanai plants, and doing household repairs that are part of normal upkeep. But at the end of each day we relax on the lanai and toast the magnificent sunsets.

Wonderful time - Wonderful condo

Oct/2011 We had a great time - fantastic view and sunsets. The condo was more than we were expecting. Perfect spot for our honeymoon; sad to leave after calling this home for ten days. Spent time hiking all over the island, snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing. Enjoyed our many trips down the path to Hideaway Beach. Our Wisconsin fall awaits us. So Mahalo and Aloha, until we see you again. Chrissy & Adam

Beautiful place. Thank you. Even made the path to Hideaway Beach. Postcards was great. Saw whales and rainbows and great waves. Did Safari Helicopter tour - fantastic. Dolphin Fish Market was good - so was the Olympic Cafe. The owners were wonderful and we will rent this unit again. There were no problems with any aspect of this rental.

Perfect Kauai

Guest: Renee and Jim (Anchorage, Alaska)
Date of Stay: 03/05/11 Review Submitted: 06/22/11

March 7th: We arrived on March 5th and today was the most perfect Kauai day. It was cloudy and rainy the first couple of days, but today was/is perfect. Coming from Alaska - this is a true "paradise" adventure and the condo makes it so enjoyable. Wonderful kitchen/ baths & showers/ lanais etc. Thanks so much for allowing us to share your paradise residence. We started off on the south shore (Waimea area). It was interesting, but we think the north shore is much more enjoyable. Great beach walking, snorkeling, hiking, etc. Shaved ice in Hanalei was a high point for cooling off after a hot day at the beaches. Mahalo for sharing this wonderful condo. We hope to visit again.

Special Time at Puu Poa

Date of Stay: 07/12/10 Review Submitted: 12/16/10

Can't thank you enough for this special time at Puu Poa. Our family of four loved being here. From the fabulous frog sculptures which greeted us on day one, to the glorious sunset evenings on the lanai, sleeping and waking to the sounds of the surf below, smelling and tasting food whipped up in your fab kitchen, much laughing at the pool, evenings watching Jurassic Park and South Pacific on your great entertainment system, and being entertained by snorkelers and surfers that we watched with our binoculars below. The kids and we are sad to be packing up to say good bye. We are all grateful that we could relax in such a wonderful, wonderful place. Your home was appreciated more than you could imagine. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We'll be back soon.

Home Sweet Paradise!!!

This unit met all of our expectations and more. Virtually, every room offers unmatched views of Big Blue. The overall square footage was a real plus and provided that "home away from home" feelling. We never felt crowded or cramped. The bedrooms, kitchen, den/family room, bathrooms are all very large and accomomdating. In fact, the master bedroom provides excellent views of the ocean, sunsets, and nighttime stars. Everything in this unit is exceptionally clean and well maintained. We appreciated all the extra amenities such as the BBQ, washer/dryer, beach towels, cd/stereo, dvd player, ice chests, beach mats...just to name a few. We greatly enjoyed the lanai. It is large and well equipped with chairs, table, umbrella and BBQ. It makes a great hangout for morning coffee, afternoon mai tais, evening cookouts, and beautiful sunsets. This property also gives you easy access to great beaches, hiking/walking trails, snorkeling, waterfalls, river kayaking, shopping, grocery stores, golf, and tasty restaurants. We have fallen in love with Kauai and your condo. Mahalo, The Childers (Go Sooners)

Could not have asked for anything more!

This was our first time in Hawaii and we could not have picked a better spot. The photos and description on the listing were accurate and were even better than expected. The property was clean and maintained and was in a gorgeous location. The owner was extremely helpful in answering questions about Kauai and what to do and see. We stopped in San Fransisco on the way to Hawaii and the owner gave us excellent information about the city where he lives as well. The "Welcome Book" with suggestions of places to see and do was great but needs some updating, since restaurants and some hotels have changed names. One restaurant where we had an excellent meal was "Postcards" in Honalei. I would have no problem recommending this property to anyone visiting Kauai.

Ron & Gloria, This was our 7th trip to Kauai, our favorite place on Earth. We have always stayed in Princeville due to the perfect location for views, best beaches, whale watching, shopping, grocery store & restaurants, but your condo was by far the most incredible place we have ever stayed. The perfect ocean & Bali Hai views from the lanai and master bedroom, the large, open and bright rooms throughout, incredible walk-in shower for two, the super comfortable king size bed in the master and the well equipped kitchen, your place has it all. We will stay with you again and again! Just wish it was ours....MAHALO!

We love staying at Puu Poa, because they are spacious, luxury condos. We particularly liked yours because of the view. During our week there some of the other units were being shown, and we checked them out. They are all nice, but none had your views. We think Princeville has an unbeatable location and the surrounding amenities (shops, restaurants, beaches, the hotel) make us want to return. And when we do, we will be sure to stay in your beautiful unit. Where did you get those lovely stained glass windows?

My husband and I have stayed on Kauai several times, usually on the eastern shore. I love being able to walk out of the condo and be on the beach. Your unit at Puu Poa does not offer this, but there are so many positives, I'm really torn. The location across from the Princeville Hotel and near Hanalei is great. My husband can't wait to get on the golf course, and the local beaches are excellent. But the most amazing things are the sunsets. Your unit has fantasic views from almost every room, but the sunsets over Bali Hai are just the best. I can't imagine a more romantic location.

Our family has stayed at Puu Poa several times and this is the nicest unit we have been in. The first floor doesn't suit us, because of the cliff and our younger children. Being close to the pool is nice(except for some noise), but down at this end we get the fabulous Bali Hai views. The enclosed atrium is a huge plus, because having more room for the children is a good thing. The north shore of Kauai is the perfect place for us and your unit is a dream.
