Lancaster farmhouse description
The VonHottenstein Homestead is on a 26 acre farm that has been in our family since our immigrants bought the land in 1770. After a recent renovation and modernization while maintaining our rich historical roots, we now invite our guests to enjoy this beautiful farmhouse and included spacious lawns. You can sit on the front porch and watch the world go by and the farmers working their fields, or you can enjoy the quietness of the back yard, the orchard, gardens and fields. Best of all, you have the freedom and spaciousness of your “home” away from home. There are many Amish farms in the neighborhood, and Amish Tourist areas are close by. If you are attending a meeting or convention nearby, bring the family and just relax and spend time together. If you are relocating and want a 'home' instead of hotel room or apartment until you find your own home, call or email us for special rates. Our homestead is also an excellent place for your Small Group Retreat or Ladies Get-Away with a large meeting room and smaller breakaway rooms.
The kitchen is equipped with a toaster, coffee maker, tea maker and blender. The cupboards and refrigerator are stocked with breakfast items such as milk, OJ, coffee, cereal, bread, salt, pepper, sugar, creamer, etc.-enough to get you started. An iron and ironing board are also available. There are many great restaurants in the area if you don't want to cook, or you can have pizza delivered.
Bedroom #1 has a queen bed, bedroom #2 has a double bed and bedroom #3 has 2 twin beds. We also have 2 single mattresses, a full size Futon sofa/bed in the den, and a queen air mattress if you need more sleeping space.
We will meet you upon arrival with the keys and information on the area; and can answer any questions you may have. We look forward to sharing our heritage with you and your family and making your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Just Being Objective
Just Being Objective
I would like to give an objective review of this place and will try to stay away from voicing my personal opinion regarding furnishings, etc. I'll start with the day we checked in to the place, where the person letting us in to the property was an hour late. Our first glance at the property left us deflated as the weeds were so overgrown and the yard so unkempt. I would say that no one had pulled or mowed the weeds in several months. To their credit, the owners did come out at the end of our 3rd day and cleaned up the yard. Our second day left us without running water (i.e. toilets, sinks) for 8 hours. Yes, we called the owners several times and they managed to send someone out 8 hours later. As far as I'm concerned, that's almost an entire day of disruption. A hotel would have given you a free night's stay. On our second day, we ran out of toilet paper. At this point I should mention that there was no extra toilet paper, no tissues and no waste cans. We ran out to the store to buy necessities. I should also mention here that my sister and my mother stayed for a couple of days. My mother for 1 night and my sister for 2 nights. I ran this by the owners prior to the stay and they were accomodating to that. But back to my point, my little family of 5 ran out of these necessities before anyone else showed up at all. Now, the third day we woke up to huge puddles on the counter in the kitchen. It had rained the night before and the ceiling leaks. Boy, am I glad I didn't have my ipad or other appliances sitting close to these puddles or they would be demolished. One more thing regarding the property: there is a barn right next to the property and the barn also shares a driveway. There was someone tending to the horses once or twice a day. It was a bit of a nuisance --- I'm not sure I'd call this property "private" given this fact. On a brighter note, the property is located close to many highways.

Owner response: We welcome any families who want to relax and enjoy the country. Our farmhouse is on a farm, so you may expect to see farm animals and the people who care for them. At times there will be tractors working in the fields, equipment and hay being put in the barn, horses being exercised in the meadow, apples being picked in the orchard and the grapes being picked by the walk. That is part of the charm of staying in the country. The lawn is mowed at least once a week, and the flowers weeded regularly. With all this activity, there will be people around the property at times, usually during the day when most people are out touring the area. We keep supplies in the house according to the number of people who are renting. If one family is renting, there will be supplies for one family. If more families join that family without reservations, you will run out of supplies. We have a water safety valve which prevents excess water usage. Again, if there are more people than registered, you will have problems. If you are looking for a condo-type property with manicured gardens and daily maid service, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a home where you can relax, enjoy the scenery, watch the children run in the back yard, climb trees or swing on the tire swing and catch lightening bugs or lay in the grass and count the stars in the evening; then you will enjoy our farmhouse.
We had a very nice stay at this rental property. Pretty much everything you need in a house was there and then some. My only suggestion would be a trash can is needed in the upstairs bathroom and, possibly, in the bedrooms. Even though the house sits close to the road - the traffic was not disturbing at all. My 4 year old grandson wanted to stay at the house forever!!! He really enjoyed going from room to room and upstairs as well as the "kids" room. We have all decided that we would rent this house again if we decide to take another vacation to Lancaster. Thank you for the opportunity.

We found this home to be unsatisfactory in many ways. The owner tried to be helpful, but the appearance of the rooms was old and unattractive. The house and furnishings should be better kept and updated to be suitable for renting to others.

Our wedding p.rep stay
Our wedding p.rep stay
My son, his wife and my 2 toddler grandsons stayed at this wonderful home for the days preceding and through my other son's wedding. It was perfect! There was plenty of space to spread out and relax. The kids had a playroom and quiet space for their naps. The large kitchen with all the equipment was great for preparing food, for the rehearsal dinner. My daughter in law and I were able to complete craft projects for the wedding. Sunday morning we were able to serve breakfast for 20 relatives and friends and all watch the bride and groom open their gifts. This home was a perfect fit for our needs... and the country setting was stunning.

A bit of a let down.
A bit of a let down.
Five of us stayed at the Farmhouse recently and we had mixed feelings about the home. We were met on time and given the tour as well as the keys. The home appeared to be clean and tidy with nicely painted and papered walls. Four of us grew up on farms and are quite familiar with 100+ year old farm homes. Much of their charm is the squeaky floor or sticky door. Part of the fun is trying to figure out what was there first and what was added later. This home has many nice features, but also had some drawbacks. The first thing we noticed was a pronounced musty smell. We used various sprays throughout the week and they did help to minimize the smell, but we were unsuccessful in completely removing the odor and eventually got used to it. The home is also on a very busy road. The front step is about 25 feet from the road and make no mistake, this is a busy highway. If you do not know what a compression brake is you will by the time you leave. The home may be in the country but it has all of the noise of a busy city street. I feel the on line pictures are somewhat misleading. The home has many charms but it was furnished by Flea Market and decorated by Goodwill. When I think of farm homes I think of the pride my parents or grandparents took in their homes. My Grandmother's front room was where she kept the good stuff. This home is filled with good enough. There are a few things in need of repair. The television has a poor picture that flickers and jumps. We only had it on a few times so not a biggy. The downstairs bathroom door really should be fixed. I realize pocket doors are a pain to work on, but trying to open and close the door was difficult. Our stay in Lancaster was enjoyable. Mr. Sticky Buns was a delight. The country is beautiful and there are so many things to do. This home has so much promise. During our visit it was adequate.

Owner response: Our farmhouse is on a country road - one lane each way- with the highway 1 mile away. As with all country roads in Lancaster County, it is busy with summer visitors. Years ago trees and bushes have been planted to absorb the noise from the road, and the large back yard, patio and orchard are quite peaceful. We have many comments of peace and quiet, but this is the first complaint of noise. We had guests destroy the inside of the farmhouse on New Year's Day. Professional cleaners made every attempt to remove all the alcohol smell, but the wood floors still need to be sanded and refinished to remove all the smell. We will close in winter to do this properly. The smell is minimal, and this is the first comment about it since we opened again in April. Furniture that was destroyed, was replaced with good furniture from local farm auctions. The rest of the furniture and decorations have been in the house for generations. Some still needs refinishing and cloth repair from the New Year's incident, and we will continue to make the repairs until all is back in top condition. We have satellite TV and a slight adjustment corrected the problem which we were not aware of until receiving this review. This farmhouse has always been a home where guests were welcome. It is our goal to continue this tradition that has been passed down to us. We hope all our guests feel at home and can relax while on vacation. It is a place where children can romp and play without worry. We have added all modern conveniences, however, the farmhouse does not have a magazine look with expensive antiques and exquisite decor. If you are looking for a home with a magazine look, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a place that is clean and comfortable where your family can relax and the children have plenty of room to run and play, we would love to welcome you.

We stayed in the farmhouse for a week and it was very comfortable and clean. All the amenities we needed were there - including toys, a pack & play and highchair for our young boys. The farmhouse is close to all the area attractions. Our stay was very relaxing and we hated to leave when the week was up.

Owner response: Our goal is to provide a comfortable and relaxing home away from home for families.
The house was like walking back in time 30 years ago! At first I was unclear about my feeling of the over all appearence of this home. After a good nights rest. I woke to find myself spellbound by this home. It was as if "time had stop!" I fell in love with the charm and warmth of the house. I noticed a picture of an eldery woman sitting at a sewing machine. Hanging in the kitchen. Right away, I knew this had to be her home. I honestly had a feeling of welcoming in "her home." In no time at all, the daily stress of the 21st century disapeared. If for a weekend or a month. Anyone wanting to excape the reality of the real world. This is the perfect place! HONESTLY: the only reason I did not rate this house as a 5 star (EXCELLENT) Was the very large open window in the Dinning area of the house. With the home being so close to the road. It would have allowed for more privacy from the outside world at night. It left me feeling a bit like a "fish in a bowl." The lace panels around the back door was beautiful. You might try something like that in the Dinning area. For anyone that reads this post. Simply go into your visit with an open mind and heart. After a day or so, you will understand for yourself. How there is something about this farmhouse. It opens it's self up. Welcomes you to sit, rest, and enjoy the romanice it has to offer! Thank you for opening your family home up to my family! The saddest part of our visit was when it was time to leave. -asn

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful farmhouse with us. It has been a truly restful vacation. The location is perfect. The Landisview Market is truly a place where you can get anything. The homemade soups were excellent for cool nights(the steaks were excellent as well.) You were very thoughtful with the welcoming staples so we didn't have to go straight out for supplies. The farmhouse has all the modern conveniences without losing the old charm. Watching the equipment work the farms was not only entertaining, but educational as well. They sure have it down to a science. We will definitely be back for another vacation. We will also spread the word that this is the place to stay. Thank you both so much for sharing this farmhouse and keeping it "as is" for future generations to enjoy.

This was a perfect vacation home for a family with 2 toddlers, a baby & grandparents. Not only is the house charming, clean & well-maintained, but loaded with all the necessities-including toys, books, toddler bed, & high chairs! We were also happy to see the stocked kitchen, plentiful linens & towels-not to mention the perfect location in the center of it all. We never traveled more than 20 min. to see every Amish location & the farm view from every window was amazing! Thank you for everything-we will be back again, next time in the fall!

About the owner: Our children and grandchildren loved to visit great grandma and great grandpa, run in the big yard, help in the garden and pick apples n the orchard. After an extensive renovation, we are happy to share the farmhouse with other families. Joe restores antique European Motorcycles, and Joyce is a Professional Travel Consultant in addition to doing the bookkeeping, caring for the farm and farmhouse , and together we escort small group tours to Europe. We especially enjoy spending time with our children and grandchildren, as well as hiking and reading in our spare time.
Why the Owner Chose Lancaster:
The property has been handed down for seven generations since the immigrant bought it in 1770. We are privileged to care for the land and pass it on to our children. The farm is in the Lancaster County Farmland Preserve, so it will forever be a farm to be enjoyed by all who visit. Mother and Dad enjoyed sharing their home with guests, and in remembrance of them, we want to continue to make this a place where all feel welcome and at home during their stay.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The location of the farmhouse is convenient to many popular tourist areas, but at the same time, it is a great place to just relax and spend time reconnecting with family and friends in comfortable, spacious, and peaceful surroundings.
