We loved this unique property with great access to the Redwood forest, especially since we love to hike :) The home was very cozy and clean. The listing was accurate and the owner very responsive and helpful. We found it easy to climb into the loft rooms, only wishing our kids were still that small to bring them along ;) They would have loved it! The home has every amenity you could need; the only small short-coming is low water pressure, but the remoteness / special locale is worth the trade-off!

The farmhouse was lovely although a bit far from Arcata where our daughter lives. We found the loft ladders a bit daunting, but the kids were fine. I wouldn't recommend it for senior citizens since the stairs to the second floor are steep where the vacation rental is located. It was really nice for all of us to be together, the living room was big enough to fit all 7 of us and the kitchen had everything we needed. Water pressure un the shower was pretty low however. The hike in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove was beautiful. It's a great getaway!

My husband and I have stayed in the Farmhouse twice now, and have thoroughly enjoyed how comfortable the accommodations are. The couch is so comfortable we tend to hang out there when we are not cooking or hiking! Well-stocked kitchen, comfortable bed in the master bedroom and surprisingly quiet with highway 101 so close. The Berry Glen trail is practically just outside the door, and other gorgeous trails are easily within walking distance such as the Trillium Falls trail. In addition there are mountain biking opportunities in the area. Carole has been very hospitable and cooperative with us as the hostess. Though we live in close proximity to the park and the Farmhouse, we will return for more stays and are recommending this as a comfy get away to our friends.

The farmhouse listing is absolutely accurate in all respects. The place is easily accessible on the east side of Hwy 101, yet shielded from most of the traffic noise. It is ideally suited for a couple although the sleeping lofts will accommodate others. Walking and biking trails intersect adjacent to the property and wander through scenic areas. Our only regret is that the majority of the nearby trails do not permit dogs, even on a leash. However, there are numerous other options for your K9 companions. The elk were glorious (the fence and the balcony were appreciated!). We were visiting on the occasion of our 50th wedding anniversary, and Carole had recommended the Larrupin' Cafe in Trinidad for a special meal. WOW! What a wonderful dinner. And for some great seafood in a fisherman's atmosphere, try the Seascape at the foot of the wharf in Trinidad. Overall, an absolutely wonderful week in the redwoods.

We stayed here for a week in July/August and overall found it to be pleasant. The house is centrally located for being a base for exploring the redwoods and beaches, but you will probably want to use your car to get anywhere because you are located right on route 101 and there are no easy paths/sidewalks nearby. The house itself is really nice and has about the most comfortable couch I have ever been on. All the luxuries are there such as a big TV and Internet access. The actual set up is a bit strange as there are 2 really nice lofts that are well appointed, but almost inaccessible for anyone under 10 years of age. Sure you could sleep 5 there, but beware: getting into the lofts is very difficult…and I am rather agile. Though the house is located right on 101, it is not as noisy as I expected. Sitting out on the balcony off of the master bedroom is surprisingly quiet. The home is well situated to block road noise to the back of the house and at night you can sleep with the windows open and not get disturbed at all. There is only 1 bathroom, but it is very luxurious. The kitchen was well stocked and has nice appliances. Be careful with the dishwasher as it is not leveled with the bottom of the countertop and will tip forward spilling all the contents if you aren’t aware. Also there were numerous burned out light bulbs which made discovering which switches did what even more difficult. The stove worked well, but one of the burners had to be manually lit. The oven was so dirty that cooking anything caused a lot of smoke. It is an auto-cleaning oven so there really is no excuse for it to be that dirty. Perhaps it was overlooked by the cleaning staff, but it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for years. There is a nice little propane grill on the balcony off the master bedroom that cooked good foods for us, but the propane bottles were all out so I had to pick up one at the Orick market. Overall though the house worked well for our needs, and the beaches and redwoods are simply gorgeous. Our dogs also enjoyed the property, but we had to monitor them closely so they wouldn’t slip under the fence and wander out onto 101. And beware, all the official state/national parks don't allow dogs on the paths...just in the parking areas. Ridiculous! The beaches however - the non-state ones - are the best bet for your free running 4 legged friends (though they may request that they are on a leash...right!!) Enjoy this unique house. We did!
Owner response:The Farmhouse is set up for guests convenience, check in 3pm, check out 11am, which during a busy summer season leaves a 4 hour cleaning turn around. The oven is cleaned regularly, but in the 4 hour window, it cannot be done between each guest. There are wide wood ships ladders accessing the two lofts. Children need to be seven to sleep up there, they are like being in a tree house. I am 65 and my peer group and I, being of average fitness and bravery, have no difficulty going up or down. It is a comfortable, large, private space as compared to other comparable lodgings. I am quite particular myself, proud of this property, and will assure it is kept up to an excellent standard so you will choose to stay here and come back another time. Carole

Our family stayed here in May 2010. Carole had fresh stargazer lilies on the table and everything we could ask for in the kitchen and bathroom. The location is perfect for hiking the redwoods. We would recommend this to anyone and will definitely try to stay here again. Thanks Carole!

I brought my family to northern California to hike among the redwoods. Carole made the whole process simple and she was very friendly and helpful. The house is in an excellent location for hiking the local trails and was easily found. The house was clean and comfortable and we felt right at home. If you are planning a trip to the Redwood National Forest I would highly recommend this house.

We spent a wonderful week at the contemporary farmhouse. Its location was perfect for visiting the Redwood National Park and the several state parks between Eureka and Crescent City. The kitchen was well stocked and supplied with basic staples with plenty of pots, pans, and cooking utensils. Everything we needed was there. We loved the seclusion, the scenery, the privacy, and the herd of elk which visited us everyday. This was our first visit to the California Redwoods and the farmhouse turned out to be the perfect place to stay for us. We would definitely recommend it to friends and we do hope to go back to stay there again.

I stayed here for two weeks in Jan/Feb 2010. When I first arrived, Carole told me that I would leave a different person and she couldn't have been more right. The rental is an upstairs unit with a separate entryway from the bottom unit. Carole creates a welcoming environment with a full kitchen, including basic spices, teas, canned goods, and food stocked in the freezer, just in case you forgot something important. The unit itself is really cute, as you can see in the pictures. What you don't see in the pictures is the gas fireplace, the ginormous tv with satellite cable (which I didn't even use), the full bathtub, or the computer/printer/internet setup. She also has a basket of hiking trail maps and a book of recommended hikes in the area. The master bed is really comfy, as is the couch. The bathroom comes with everything you need. The property is close enough to the freeway that you can hear the cars passing, if you have the tv on, you can't hear the noise. Also, at night, the sound of the croaking frogs is so loud and amazing, you don't notice. When the skies are clear, the moon and stars shine brilliantly over the shadowed treetops. From the master balcony, you can also hear the sound of a creek running. It is SO relaxing. Unfortunately, I did not get to experience the elk on the property. However, I got to experience the elk on the meadow across the street, on the neighboring property, on several properties down the road in either direction, in the middle of the road, and along several hikes. Hiking trails are close and abundant. I went on a hike almost every day that I was there and only hiked one trail twice - I chose to rehike my favorite on the last day. By the way, Carole is the best. She is such a sweet, caring person. You will be in good hands. Not only did she help me find my way in the area, to the hikes, and to the post office, but she also made me homemade muffins (and gave me the recipe!) and gave me a bouquet of freshly cut tulips - just because... All in all, I highly recommend this rental. Thanks again for everything, Carole!!

Hello, My husband and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary and Valentine's day weekend. We had never been to the area and drove from Seattle. The house was exactly as advertised. Centrally located to trails and close to many elk viewing spots. The setting although right on Rt. 101 was quiet and restful. The bed in the Master was very comfortable. Carole has provided everything you need and is very motivated to have your stay be the best it can be. If you come to the area and stay here you also have to reserve and go to dinner at the Moonstone Grill in Trinidad.

Cozy house with all the perks of home PLUS the elk are really fun to watch from our private balcony (none of us had seen them that close). My grandkids LOVED the lofts, though they hit their heads a lot. Watch the deck and stairs if it is cold out....we all nearly took a header on the ice!!! Grandkids had never seen the ocean...lots of spots to get out of the car and play. The town of Orick was helpful. The grocery store (back into Orick and on the left) had everything we needed. We went north to the Trees of Mystery and took the gondola ride ($14 each and worth every penny). Very cool vistas...one side of the huge deck is looking at a valley and hills and the other is down to the ocean. Bring your binoculars...theirs have seen better days. Oh, the trip is long getting there...we are 30 miles above Nevada City and it took us 10 hours. 299 and 36 are really windy and loooong....with 299 maybe being the better road to take. Slow down in Elk areas, we saw maybe 3 near misses as people roared past our little house. Hope this helps you decide. Have fun!

This farmhouse offers so much more than the rental details could possibly describe. Carole has created a perfect balance of rustic charm and modern elegance. Not only did the kitchen have all the appliances you could possibly need, it was also stocked with breakfast items so we could fix a quick meal before we started out for the day – a prefect blend of convenience and cost savings. Each day we went out to explore the nearby beaches or hike in the Redwoods, but each night it was a special treat to return to the warmth of this charming home. I would absolutely recommend this property.

My family and I stayed at the farm house Sept 21,08 for two days and had a great time! The elk were right there in the backyard and the house was charming and great for my family of five. My kids loved her horse and cat and the whole experiece added to our stay in the Redwood Forest. I felt right at home there and we actually wished we had stayed a few more days. Carole is very generous with her home and for that we are thankful!! Thanks for a great stay!! Arlene Ahola

This is a great place for a family get away. We stayed there over Labor Day weekend and had a great time! The house is clean and comes with everything you could possibly need. There is an elk herd that spent most of the day on the property. It's very close to the Lady Bird Johnson redwood grove which is a beautiful hike and to the beach at Big Lagoon. The resident horse was an added attraction for our grandchildren! I would highly recommend the farmhouse!
