Alma house description
Looking to relax and get away from it all? Enjoy the comfort and conveniences of home in this quiet mountain home. Its remote, yet only a short drive to Breckenridge. Spend your time being active outdoors with skiing, snowshoeing and sledding or sit by the woodstove inside with a good book.
Just south of Breckenridge is the town of Alma, on State Highway 9 between Breckenridge and Fairplay (20 minutes to parking lot at Peak 9 in Breckenridge). Located in the Placer Valley area, you will enjoy beautiful views of the entire surrounding valley and 14,000 foot mountains while hiking the neighborhood. Just down the road, the South Platte River features gold medal fly fishing.
A short drive over Hoosier Pass gets you to Breckenridge for exceptional mountain biking, skiing, shopping, golfing, music and dining. Lake Dillon in Frisco offers boating and paved bike trails. Or, you can enjoy cross-country skiing, fishing, biking, snowshoeing, and hiking, without leaving wonderful Placer Valley. Montgomery Lake and wilderness areas are just a mile away, while the quaint mining towns, Fairplay and Alma, are right down the road.
This well-maintained, family-friendly home is located on a one acre lot and was built around 12 years ago. It sits at the bottom of Mount Bross backed by National Forest and bordered by many other splendid mountain peaks. Want to bag a fourteener? The trail heads for Mt. Quandry is just over the pass. Mt. Democrat, Lincoln and Bross trailheads are a 6 mile drive. A grocery store, several coffee shops and the South Park rec center are within a 10 minute drive. In addition to the restaurants and shops, for a small fee you can enjoy pools, hot tubs and workout facilities at the Breckenridge and/or South Park rec center (also has free wireless access).
The house is equipped with all the amenities of home - basic DISH satellite TV, DVD and VCR, stereo and i-pod docking station, 5-zone heating, and a crankin' wood stove. There's videos, DVDs and books, as well as games and toys suitable for the entire family.
The fully-equipped kitchen contains a gas range, microwave oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, trash compactor, and washer and dryer. There's a coffee maker and an espresso machine for those of you who need java first thing in the morning. On the deck there's a gas grill, patio furniture (including a hammock), a chiminea to toast marshmallows and tons of stars to gaze at night.
Two bedrooms (both with queen beds) plus an upstairs loft (with full size futon and twin bunks) can sleep up to eight people (6 adults comfortably) and there's plenty of floor space so 2 more can sleep on an aero bed if needed. There are three baths and plenty of closet storage for ski/hiking stuff. Linens, towels and starter toiletries are provided.
Rafting, Hiking or Biking? In the summer its a quick 30 minute drive south down US285 to Buena Vista and some of the best rafting in Colorado on the Arkansas River. You will find bike and hiking trails all over the area. A National Forest Service office is conveniently located in Fairplay.
Keep us in mind for skiing in winter too: No need to sit in traffic on I-70. This house is 20 minutes to Breckenridge at the bottom of Peak 9; an additional 25 minutes will put you in Keystone; Beaver Creek is an hour's drive from Alma.
You will be staying in a wonderfully, warm, cozy and secluded private home with every convenience at a fraction of the condominium and hotel prices of resort towns.
Please no smokers or pets. Renters 18 years or older please.

Colorado Family Vacation
Colorado Family Vacation
My husband and I, along with our three year old twins, stayed here for four nights. The photographs are a very accurate reflection of the property though it is quite a bit more hidden in the front due to many aspen trees. It is well maintained, clean, and has all of the things you need to prepare meals in the kitchen. We hit the Safeway grocery store in Frisco and cooked the entire time. We used the bbq grill on the deck once. We found that during our stay it always seemed to rain about 4 pm each afternoon, but only briefly, and then the sun came out. It was cool, and very cool when raining. Bring jackets or fleece for sure. Breckinridge was a pretty drive down Hoosier Pass and took around 25 minutes. Take the free gondola up to Peak 9 where the kids did bungee jumping and had ice cream. If you have multiple kids of different ages and they like the alpine slide, and other physical recreation opportunities check out the peak 9 activities and prices before going up, because once your up, you're soaked for the money and it's not cheap. But it was all worth it! The grocery store in Alma had beef from a good cattle ranch in Salida, we bought the ribeyes. There is a good Italian restaurant in Fairplay and we had an excellent breakfast at Brown Burro in Fairplay (though we never found that egg that slid off the plate!!) . Leadville is around an hour away and has a three hour train ride on the Leadville railroad. There are nice walks right outside the home. The location is quite private on a dead end culdesac and we only encountered people once on our last day. The home is well equipped for kids, both boys and girls in terms of toys and books. We barely watched the tv/dvd/stereo but the setup was nice. Text messaging from the house was hit and miss. Typically texts arrived as going down Hoosier Pass. Cell service (Sprint) worked fine. There is no internet connection but an I pad or laptop would be great for downloading and reviewing photos. And the home was a little bigger than we expected. We made use of only the two first floor bedrooms and never went upstairs to the large loft which i believe would sleep at least a couple more people. Nice to have three bathrooms. The master bathroom is recently remodeled in travertine and stone and is a pleasure to get ready though my kids did not allow me the pleasure. LOL! Book it, you'll lack for nothing!

What a wonderful hideaway. We saw maybe 3 cars on the road in front of the cabin all week, yet were just minutes into Alma and Fairplay. Very convenient to Breckenridge and to the trail heads for Quandary, Mt. Lincoln and Sherman. Thanks for letting us stay. We hated to leave.

Owner response: What a wonderful review. We are so glad you had a great time and hope you will consider staying with us again. Thanks so much.
Not only are the views wonderful but the cabin is just as beautiful. It instantly made us feel at home. The kitchen was well equipped and easy to cook in. The location was far enough to give us the remote feeling while still having easy access to Breckinridge. We are grateful to the owners for opening their home to us.

We loved staying at this house. It is incredibly comfortable and a great place to get away from it all! We spent several lovely nights cooking and relaxing in front of the fire. And it is a great distance to the slopes. We highly recommend this house.

About the owner: I am the second owner of this beautiful mountain home and have had it now for eight years. I love living in metro Denver but also appreciate having a place in the mountains to getaway with the kids. We have had wonderful times here with friends and have started renting it out recently. We have had many return guests.
Why the Owner Chose Alma:
We lived in the foothills of Denver for 8 years before buying this property. We finally had kids and wanted to be close to everything in Denver, but also wanted to enjoy the mountains. Alma is a cute little town and the locals are wonderfully friendly. We love being so close to Breckenridge and the magnificant 14,000 foot mountains. There's skiing, sledding, snowshoeing as well as lots of summer activities like hiking, biking, fishing, boating (on Lake Dillon) and canoeing. Its also a convenient distance from Denver - about a 2 hour drive so it appeals to local and out of town visitors alike - and you can avoid the I-70 traffic by taking US285.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The ride to the house is glorious - what a treat to drive over Kenosha pass to the house on US285 and hit South Park. The views are to die for. Once you arrive at the house its like getting away from it all but with all the convenience of home. Its great to hang out on the decks and read, make s'mores with the kids at night and watch the stars. The South Platte river and reservoir make it fun to fish with the kids. Alma is a groovy little town with some good coffee shops and restaurants and there's a few great parks for the kids (including 2 skateboard parks). Breckenridge always has something going on during the weekends all year long.
