Wonderful Bachelor/Bachelorette party weekend!

Guest: Jennifer M.
Date of Stay: 09/09/11 Review Submitted: 09/12/11

We had a wonderful time at the Wahlhiefer Haus. We had a group of 19 guys and gals and the house fit us perfectly. We rented out both the main house and the bunk house. The house is right behind a Tavern which at night did not bother us at all. It was actually great to have it in walking distance. They had great food and a great atmosphere. Horse shoes and washers made hanging outside a blast and of course all the girls loved the tree swing!! The house is so beautiful and very spacious!

Awesome Place to Getaway

Date of Stay: 05/27/11 Review Submitted: 06/01/11

Our extended family rented Wahlhiefer Haus for the Memorial weekend and it was the best time we've had in a while. There was more than enough space for everyone and we enjoyed each others company just hanging out, watching the deer, armadillos, birds, etc. The house is very well taken care of, charming, and very clean. The owner, Betties was a joy to work with, she went way beyond the call of duty to make sure we enjoyed our stay, extremely east to work with and respected our privacy as well. We look forward to renting again next year, thanks for everything Bettie. I'd recommend Wahlhiefer Haus 100% to anyone looking to get away to just enjoy getting out of the city and enjoying quality family time. See you next year Bettie.

Spacious house, wonderful owner

Our group has come down to the Wahlhiefer Haus every year for at least the last five years, and we absolutely love it. There aren't many places that can sleep and feed 22 people comfortably, but the Wahlhiefer Haus manages it. It has everything you need to stay there for weeks at a time. I guess the main downside is that there isn't much to do in Hunter, TX, where it's located (except for Riley's Tavern, which is great), but it's close to New Braunfels and to the Tanger Outlet Mall. The other thing I have to say is that Bettie, the owner, is absolutely great. During our stay this year, the kitchen light wasn't working. She had called us the evening after we arrived to make sure everything was going well, so we told her about the light. The next morning, she had a handyman over to look at the light. When he couldn't fix it, she had an electrician come out the next day. I thought it was remarkable how promptly she addressed our concerns, and how she stayed in touch with us throughout the whole process to make sure everything was taken care of.

We had a wonderful time at the Wahlheifer Haus! This was conveniently located to all of our planned outings and was able to accomodate all of our group. The price was better than any we could have gotten at a hotel/motel and a much better atmosphere than the usual hotel room. We will recommend this quaint house to all of our friends and will definitely stay again the next time we are in the San Antonio area.

College Boys' Getaway

Guest: Roger (Grand Prarie, TX)
Date of Stay: 03/04/11 Review Submitted: 03/10/11

Only one Positive: The house was clean with clean sheets. It is very old and rundown. The water in one bath was only a trickle out of the faucet. It would take 2 min. to fill a cup and 15 min to fill the tank so you could flush. The bunkhouse did not have a restroom and there was a port-a-potty outside the building. The buildings are right up against Riley’s Bar with loud music and drunks. The train track was 100 yds away and trains went by every hour all night long blowing their whistle. The small bunkhouse had two window units and the big house only had one for the whole house. Thank goodness it was winter. The two small bedrooms were walk in closets turned into bedrooms with a twin bed and barely enough room to wiggle by. You had to walk through a bedroom to get to the next one. There is no living room and the back bedroom had no door. The place is for sale… for a reason. We would not recommend it and will not stay there again. If you are a bunch of college kids who just want to flop down and go to the bar at night, it is the place for you.

Owner response:I am truly sorry to hear about this guest’s dissatisfaction in a review instead of during their actual stay. We are quick to resolve issues as soon as they surface, but are unable to address problems that go unmentioned. We called to check in and but no concerns were shared with us. We are surprised to discover they had such a different idea of Wahlhiefer Haus since we clearly detail the bathrooms available, local Tavern, and train tracks. We also provide the port-a-potty as an additional service with no extra charge, simply to make restroom use more convenient for large groups. We certainly would not want to in any way mislead or misrepresent the property. We have never had trouble with “drunks” from the Tavern attraction. Again, alerted to any such problems as they arise we are happy to make every attempt possible to make our guests’ stay a pleasant one. Our plumber and handyman have since rectified any water flow problems and would have resolved that issue for our guests if we had been made aware of it at that time. For the many families and groups which visit and revisit each year we happily maintain our quaint and charming farmhouse.

A group of us went down to New Braunfels to float the river and enjoy some R&R and the Wahlhiefer Haus is the best place to do it! Two years ago we went down and knew it was perfect for us. Bettie is an outstanding woman and makes the whole process very accomodating. If you're thinking about staying here, stop thinking and call Bettie! Book it today! My post from 2 years ago is under the name Gumby and its all true and more!

Fun Times at a Relaxing Home

Guest: Becki (Mansfield, Tx)
Date of Stay: 06/18/10 Review Submitted: 07/01/10

The Wahlhiefer Haus was awesome. There was plenty of room for our group of 18, and nice that there were so many private rooms. The outside porch was a good place to sit around and just hang out, and the short walk to Riley's Tavern made it nice. I would highly recommend the home to anyone looking for a fully stocked home to just hang out and relax. It was fun for my husband and his family knowing that their great-aunt had previously owned the home and for them telling stories of their previous memories at the house. A great place to stay, and Bettie was amazing to talk to and work with while getting the house booked! We look forward to being back next year.

wow challenge retreat 2010

Date of Stay: 06/06/10 Review Submitted: 06/10/10

Outstanding place to bring a youth retreat of 25 or less kids! Very charming farmhouse with lots of bed space and great outdoor cooking area. Very easy access from I-35 and 20 minutes from both rivers for a float trip and 45 minutes to Sea World, riverwalk, and Alamo. We put the Girls in the Bunkhouse and the boys in the main house and everyone had a great time. Bettie , the owner, made sure we had everything we needed and checked on us several times to make sure our stay was perfect. We had no issues with the property and the house was loaded with games, movies, all cooking needs, and more! Even though there is only 2 bathrooms we still were able to get everyone clean each day, not bad for 25 people (8 adults and 17 highschoolers). There is a occasional train, but that adds to the Hill Country charm of this place. We loved reading the history in each of the rooms and on the property about the farmhouse and outbuildings. We will be coming back here again with another group of kids very soon! A great big "Thank You" to Bettie and the farmhouse from the Branded Hearts Youth Group from the Cowboy Church of Ellis Co.

Thank you so much for a great 4 days! You will not be dissappointed with this charming farmhouse if you are looking for lots of bed space! We took 17 high schoolers and 8 adults and we had such a great time I am sure I will use this place again. We had plenty of beds, towels, and outdoor space and we used it all. We grilled out and made homemade ice cream on the outdoors cooking area. The Girls stayed in the bunkhouse and the boys in the main house and it worked out perfect! We were 45 minutes to Sea World and 20 minutes from the River! Perfect if you are looking for lots of beds and quiet or like us with lots of kids and you need to keep them busy and away from all the distractions of city hotels! Easy access to I-35 and all attractions are close to the farmhouse. We enjoyed the history as well that is posted throughout the property. We found everything in working order and all cooking utensils needed to cook for our small army! Owner went beyond what was needed when getting everything in order and checking on us after we checked in. A/C was colld as ice and felt so great after our long hot days at the attractions. Don't pass this property up if you are thinking about floating the rivers, San Antonio, San Marcos, or New Braunfels and have a group or large family. Here is a huge "Thank You" from Cowboy Church of Ellis Co. and the Branded Hearts Youth Group!

Just right for a BIG gathering

Guest: One BIG Family (Houston)
Date of Stay: 05/28/10 Review Submitted: 06/09/10

Don’t know really where to start, upon our arrival we we're enchanted by the size of the house, it was a family reunion so it was about 25 of us including kids and there were plenty of beds, unfortunately the house is not as charming as it looks in the pictures, it is very old or let’s say "antique", the claw foot tub was dirty and we had to clean it before using it and the shower hose on it didn’t work, we also had to clean the shower in the "master" bedroom, the AC never worked well so the house temperature remained at 85 and as much as we tried we couldn't get it to go below that... we couldn't use the barbeque area because of the bee hives around it and on our third day we got looked in the house when I tried to open the door and ended up with the door knob on my hand, we could've used the patio door but it was dark and there is nothing but woods behind it. There is NOT enough place for group gathering inside the house so we had to sit out in the drive way with the mosquitoes and at one point in the dark because the ONE light bulb out there burned out. It did not turn into a very positive experience with the owners because we did not get our whole deposit back, according to them because a couple of TV tables a DVD player and some pots and pans where move from their original place, I guess I miss understood what the cleaning fee actually covered... This is just some of it, there were other minor things that the house had that its just not worth mentioning here.. The place is perfect for people with kids, since outside of the house there is plenty of room for them to run around...After all our family overlooked these things and just enjoyed our time together and had great memories... I do doubt that we would stay there again unless there is a change of ownership and EXTENSIVE renovating."

Owner response:We are very sorry to hear that this guest had such a poor time, especially since we went over and above-board in our efforts to assist and help with each of her complaints as they came up. We were actually surprised by the above review since we tried so hard to work with her and, even after she repetitively ignored her rental agreement, we attempted to shield her from the full financial repercussions. Our guests consistently have a fantastic experience at Wahlhiefer Haus and we work hard to ensure that.

My husband and I stayed at this wonderful little rental in November. Everything was very clean, and just as the website stated, close to just about all the desirable locations: close to the outlets, not far from the river, and situated conveniently close to town, too. We were delighted with our accommodations. And have to admit, love the little country swing!

A wonderful weekend at Wahlhiefer Haus. The house was clean and the sleeping accommodations were better than most large group facilities I found. Great location too just minutes from Gruene, Texas State University, the Outlet Mall and The River. The owner was extremely helpful and professional. I would recommend staying here to all our friends.

Wahlhiefer Haus-- Hidden Gem of the Hill Country

Guest: Glimmercat (San Jose, California USA)
Date of Stay: 11/13/08 Review Submitted: 12/29/08

Wahlhiefer Haus is everything it promises! My husband and I stayed here in November. It's an old-fashioned farm house, very nostalgic, and there are little educational plaques posted here and there that really add to the overall learning experience. The owners have themed out the property with little farm animal cut-outs--so cute for taking photos. There's a swing on an oak tree for the kids, and a place to lock up the family dog so you take your pets along. They also had a nice video library and many board games. It was very comfortable and clean--the owner was so welcoming and friendly. I would definitely recommend this hidden little gem for anyone visiting the Texas Hill Country!

Our stay at the Wahlhiefer Haus was most enjoyable. During the reservation phase, Bettie was most helpful and responsive to all our questions. Once we arrived, we found the house exactly as she had described it. It reminded me so much of my Grandparents farm house. Very homey feeling and clean. If you have never taken a bath in an original clawfoot bathtub, you will have to try this one. The ages in our group ranged from 18 to 78 and everyone enjoyed the rich history of the house. Several walked over to Riley’s to enjoy the live music in the evening. The Google Map was a little off with their directions, but Mapquest was spot on. There are some train tracks nearby but are definitely not show shoppers. We won’t hesitate to rent again. Bettie, thanks for making a memorable stay. Hope to see you again next summer, Dusty

We loved this house. It really had a lot of room for a large family for group. It was close to everything, the outlet mall, water park, river and tons of other things to do. We saved lots of money being able to cook and grill at the house. It was kid friendly, the house owner had games and movies for the kids.

The Wahlhiefer Haus was exactly what we were looking for. We had a group of 14 people from Ft. Worth wanting to float the Guadalupe and relax for the weekend. This house was very clean and extremely cozy! The description of the house is very accurate. No false ideas about what to expect. One thing I found to be very interesting was each room had a plaque on the wall that contained a bit of history. We all walked around the property learning as much as we could and had a blast!Bettie Smith was very accomodating and made the entire trip easy from the first phone call to book the house to the contact after we left. Riley's Tavern, which is located next door, was a good place to relax and grab a bite to eat or have a drink. Best wings I ever had! Every one of us enjoyed staying there and hope to make an annual visit to the Wahlhiefer Haus.
