Sandy Cove Oceanfront / Wharf/ Beach/Kayak/Chester Nova Scotia
Year Purchased: 1985
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
SANDY COVE COTTAGE is located right on a cove on the ocean and we have
a large stone wharf with a wooden deck and a floating dock attached
where we keep the 2 person yellow kayak and a small row boat . We also
have a separate swim float with a ladder so it’s fun to swim from the
wharf to the float and back. The warm gulf stream comes in near our
side of NOVA SCOTIA so our water is much warmer than New England’s
ocean. We like to boat in our cove or leave it to explore the bay that
has over 300 islands, some with beaches. We have over 15 acres on the
ocean, including a private white sandy beach where it’s fun to swim or
sit on a beach chair and watch sail boats in the distance as well as
many birds, such as eagles, osprey, great blue herons, loons and shore
birds etc. About 3 miles away is the small resort town of Chester and
I love playing on the golf course that runs along the ocean, and
walking through the town or eating in one of the many fun restaurants.
Spectacular views from the golf course of MAHONE BAY with its many islands. Golf course is open to the public. The restaurant is excellent. Casual dress and a choice of eating on the open deck, screened deck or inside. Also fabulous views from the restaurant.

I am a retired French teacher who was born and spent most of my
childhood years in Montreal, Canada except for 5 years in Orange Park,
Florida where my father was a psychologist at the Yerkes chimpanzee
lab and a year on scholarship at a university in Neuchatel,
Switzerland. When I returned to Montreal I met my husband (on a blind
date ) at McGill University where I was an undergrad student and my
husband was a medical student. When we graduated he returned to Penna,
his home state, for his internship. After that his residency training
took us to Texas, Maryland, London, England and Wisconsin. During this
time we had two sons and later adopted a daughter and took in foster
daughters whom we wanted to adopt but the mothers just wanted to hold
on to them loosely. In 1989 my husband’s friend, from undergrad years
at Gettysburg College, purchased Nisbet Plantation on Nevis and we
started buying land next door. We ended up with 4 acres on the ocean
and now that we are retired we live in our own villa for 5 winter
months and rent CORAL REEF VILLA.I have spent every summer of my life
in Nova Scotia and only stay in Penna spring and fall for doctor
appointments, and other essential visits. I am proud to be a
Canadian citizen as well as an American citizen and Nevisian, too.

Excellent customer service, clean and well maintained, perfect location for sight-seeing, even more perfect for a quiet and private vacation. The cottage was fully stocked with everything we could need and the personal touches were appreciated. .A true, 'homey' comforting family cottage. Highly recommended. We were looking for a comfortable place to relax, with the convenience of being close enough to some of the most incredible Nova Scotia views - our expectations were completely met. T

Your cabin is beautiful and I love the furniture. We found it so nice to come home after a long day of sightseeing and boy did we sightsee! We saw a male pheasant and we got some nice pictures of a deer and the chipmunk here. The master bedroom is amazing. One of my dream rooms! Thank you for the phone calls and Doreen was wonderful. Everyone in Nova Scotia is so friendly no matter where we went it felt like home.

Fourth Summer at Sandy Cove Cottage

We have made Sandy Cove cottage our vacation base for two week long visits in July for the last four summers. Our sons (9 and 11) love the water and the adventures we have at Sandy Cove. This summer’s specials included seeing two fawns outside the cottage one morning, a woodchuck, pheasants, chipmunks, squirrels, seagulls, and the local ospreys. One of Gabe’s favorite activities is hunting for and catching crabs using a string with different kinds of bait attached. We all enjoy using the various boats and this year did our annual canoe trip to Chester against the wind on the way there with a healthy tailwind for the trip home, and had a sailing adventure in the Raven with Jane and Ron. Day trips included an afternoon and evening at Bayswater Beach, horseback riding at Hatfield Farm, and a zodiac trip down and up the Shubenacadie River during the extreme tide, complete with walking on quicksand, sliding down a slippery mud bank, and riding over the incredible standing waves created by the tide going up the river. We also made an overnight trip to Brier Island (down Digby neck with two very short ferry rides) for whale watching with close up sightings of humpbacks, a Minke whale, and a seal. We enjoy the solitude of the cozy cottage, all of the amenities including the washer and drier (great for wet towels and bathing suits), swimming and diving off the fixed and floating docks, and the proximity to Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Chester, which is only five minutes away, is really special because of its small size, beautiful homes and cottages, friendly residents, the kids’ two week long sailing program at the Chester Yacht Club, the Kiwi Café, the deck of the Rope Loft, and all the other places to explore in and around town. It also has a hardware store, several grocery stores, and a Tim Hortons so we can get our fill of maple dipped donuts. The cottage is also conveniently located to other sights and places including Peggy’s Cove, Halifax, Annapolis and the Bay of Fundy. The weather is either sunny with a chance of rain or rainy with a chance of sun. For rainy days and the evenings the cottage has a collection of books, wireless internet and a multitude of television channels to be able to experience programs we don’t see at home. There are many marvelous places to see around the world but we find ourselves drawn back to Sandy Cove year after year for its perfect combination of solitude and adventure, for kids both young and old.

Sandy Cove is a beautiful little haven, and will become our "home away from home" while visiting our daughter in Halifax. We would not hesitate to recommend it to any type of traveller. We felt completely at home in this cottage nestled privately among beautiful large oak trees (which we don't have at home - just spectacular!), grassy fields of wildflowers and the tranquil ocean. The cottage itself is so nicely appointed - every detail is looked after from the fluffy pillows and lovely linens to Cd's, books and games - we even had internet access, which was a bonus for our kids. Everything is so cozy and Jane's collection of antiques really added to the character. At times we had several people visiting and never once felt crowded - with the deck on the roof, the lower patio, the lovely private dock (complete with kayak, row boat and all the accessories), the shaded hammock - everyone ended up having their favorite spot to relax, reflect and unwind. Chester is a short drive from Halifax (so the big city is close by if you need it), but all amenities are available right in town, including a phenomenal bakery, funky gift shops, used bookstores, great eating spots and a beautiful golf course with breathtaking ocean views. Jane and Ron are the perfect hosts - never intruding but always available to answer questions, recommend activities and dining spots, or just to chat. It was our pleasure getting to know such a wonderful couple. We will most definitely be back!

This summer (2009) we discovered a wonderful place- Sandy Cove. Sandy Cove is truly an ideal spot. Serene and private with beautiful scenery at every turn. The cottage itself suits its surroundings, pretty without being pretentious. It is cozy, 'homey', and clean. It is all a cottage should be with comfortable furnishings, good beds, and even a few good mystery novels. The kitchen is well equipped allowing one to prepare meals quite easily but there are many good restaurants nearby too. The dock is a great spot to enjoy swimming, kayaking, or a good book. The location is a perfect distance to discover many picturesque towns-Chester, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and Peggy's Cove. All with terrific restaurants, markets, and shopping. The thoughtful owners provide lots of little extras to make your stay welcoming and enjoyable. Sandy Cove is a place where you will want to return again and again...

Our week at Sandy Cove was one of the shortest of our lives. It was the perfect location for day trips to Halifax, Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg -- all highly recommended. Our wonderful on-site host was excellent at ascertaining our interests and making suggestions for things we might enjoy. But the best part was just hanging out at the comfortable cottage and deciding whether to enjoy the view from the yard, the dock, the beach, the kayak or even the master bedroom. Our family of four -- parents, one teen and one younger child -- all recommend Sandy Cove!

We enjoyed a glorious vacation at Sandy Cove and Nova Scotia! It was so nicely comfortable, well-equipped, easy, beautiful and peaceful! All of the accommodations are very nice, from the pillows and linens, dishware and cookware and furniture, inside and outside, to the great washer and dryer. The property and place were neat, clean, tidy, well-organized, convenient and very thoughtfully provided, and we thoroughly enjoyed the outside chairs and decks. We paddled the boat and kayak, which was great fun, and sat by the water of the cove a couple of times every day. We loved sighting around the large property the local shy foxes and pheasants, and saw gorgeous bald eagles and bird life, (no bears or mooses which we really wanted to see!). We have never enjoyed so much good lobster, haddock, scallops and mussels - all we ate the whole time there, often at the cottage but also in good restaurants! And necessary shopping was easy - and the local natives are nice and pleasant as can be, even to "outsiders". We enjoyed our explorations all around NS: we really enjoyed the excellent Fisheries Museum in Lunenberg (with an aquarium!) and the Maritime Museum in Halifax, shopping in Mahone Bay and quaint shops, seeking out little lighthouses and the outstanding Peggy's Cove, the North Shore's Bay of Fundy and the whole scenic, historic South Shore, fantastic Cape Breton and all the wonderful history and preservation of history and architecture, and the absolutely beautiful nature and conservation of natural resources - we also loved the Canadian dedication to recycling, composting, smaller, more fuel-efficient cars and no littering! But without question, one of the of nicest things was coming "home" to the cottage in the evening - it was incredibly comfortable, easy-living and beautifully scenic and made this vacation much more restful and relaxing for us far from home. The cottage was so pretty to wake up to in the morning - surrounded by beautiful scenery, gorgeous water, trees, wildflowers, sky and breezes, and as much privacy as one could hope for. When we returned home to SC, we brought those wonderful memories and feelings back with us, amazingly well-rested and peaceful. We cannot thank the owners and the delightful, helpful caretaker Doreen enough for everything they did, all they do, to share the wonderful, beautiful Sandy Cove with their guests! We truly hope to go there again and will never forget this loveliest vacation. Really highly recommended.
Owner response:Thank you so much for your outstanding review of our SANDY COVE COTTAGE. It was a pleasure for me, even though living far away, to know how much you were enjoying your vacation there.I will pass your kind words on to my wonderful caretaker Doreen.

We have been enjoying vacationing at Sandy Cove over the past 14 years, returning to this "little piece of heaven on earth" every chance we get. We love the peaceful setting beside the ocean cove, surrounded by the natural beauty of Nova Scotia's South Shore. The authentic and spacious cottage gives you that wonderful relaxing "I'm on vacation" feeling that will draw you back year after year. The antique furnishings give Sandy Cove a comfortable "homey" atmosphere, at the same time it comes well equipped with all the conveniences. When you are ready for some adventure, the area has some of the best sailing, the best food, the best scenery, and the most interesting places to visit on the East Coast. Our wonderful hosts and friendly South Shore residents have made our vacations at Sandy Cove a permanent warm spot in our hearts. We highly recommend Sandy Cove for a vacation that will leave you renewed and wanting more....
