About Nezignan l’Eeveque
Nézignan L'Evêque is a jewel of a village tucked 15 km north of the Mediterranean coastline. It is almost exclusively a wine-growing village. Its sunny and mild climate welcomes visitors from around the world. Nézignan L'Évêque was the property of the Bishop of Agde more than eight centuries ago.
By Deed of Gift in the 12th Century, the Bishop and Count of Agde became Lord of Nézignan and retained the title until the aftermath of the French revolution when the château was sold by auction and dismantled.
Some stones were recovered to build the staircase of the Château de Coussergues while others were used to pave the streets of Forensac and to build the village of Nézignan.
The village has a boulangerei (baker), a bar, a green grocer and a first class restaurant hotel. It is located 3 kms from Pezenas where a local market takes place every Saturday in the wide main street of Pézenas.
It offers fabulous peanuts (yes), olives, cheeses, wildly colorful flowers, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. This otherwise sleepy historic vieille ville of art and may have as many artisans as in the fortified village of Cordes. Molière and his theatre company played in Pézenas several times in the 17th century in a theatre that is still standing today.
The charm of Pézenas is that it seems that time has stood still for 300 years. The old quarter is exactly as it was when the Prince de Conti made it one of the most embellished town of the Languedoc.
The village of Nézignan l'Évèque is also located near Saint-Thibéry a typical small town with 15th -16th century abbey church that is close to the Roman bridge ruins that spans over the Hérault river and which was once the Via Domitia, the ancient Roman main road.
Nearby are the villages of Montagnac, an important market during the medieval times, and Lavangnac with a 17th century château with turrets.
About the region
There are many day trips that can be taken from Nézignan L'Évèque. To the north are the Cévennes mountains, the National park of the Larzac, the village of Roquefort, famous for its cheese, the lake Salagou, and le Barrage des Olives, a famous olive grove north of Roujan.
Close by is the Mediterranean mouth of the Canal du Midi, offering a lovely afternoon trip by boat, car or bicycle along the tree-lined canal. Further along is the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct and bridge, the cities of Arles and Nîmes, both graced with arenas also dating back to the Roman era.
The colours of the Languedoc landscape are hot red fields, vivid violets, green vineyards and the deep blue Mediterranean sea. This is the largest wine producing area in all of France. This region caters to those who do not crave the noise and exorbitant prices of the Riveria.
This is where the old Langue d'Occitanie was spoken, which, once abbreviated, gave its name to the region. The language is still heard in the south. The attentive ear can detect a subtle twangs on the end of words pronounced by the eldest among the locals.
