My extended family including my 12 year old daughter and my mom and aunt both ~80+ had a wonderful vacation staying at the Waldenser Estate. There is a bedroom on the lower floor, so my aunt didn't have to attempt the quaint but uneven stairs. It is very rural but has a nice restaurant down the street and grocery stores in the next town over. Great hiking especially if you like to walk far into the woods (go up to the castle and continue into the woods - I ran this almost every day). A car is a must for site seeing the beautiful walled cities in this part of Germany. One cautionary note about car rentals (nothing to do with this lovely home): Do Not Rent From Terstappen! They are subcontracted by both Thrifty/Dollar and they are crooks. Google them or check Trip Advisors - many complaints and no compliments.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

My husband, two children, and parents 'met in the middle' (we are in Bahrain and they are in the US) and spent 10 wonderful days before Christmas at the Waldenser Estate and it was perfect for us! The location was perfect for day trips to Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Worms, Darmstadt, Wurzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and more! There was more than enough space for us all to spread out and sleep comfortably, the courtyard outside was a great, safe place for the boys to play on the days we relaxed locally, and the house had everything we needed. We were even greeted by Christmas decorations and an array of food to get us settled in! Marianne was wonderful to work with, even through several changes in our dates, and even helped us recover a notebook we left behind! We can't wait to visit again!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Our family of 9 stayed at the Waldenser Estate from December 19 2010 -January 6 2011. We had a wonderful time together, and enjoyed the well equipped kitchen for cooking; the spacious dining room for our delicious meals (the grocery stores and local products are great!); and spent many hours relaxing together in the living room. Three of the bedrooms have king sized beds, there is a smallish single bed in one other room, and a fold down couch in the upper living room,. Old houses can be cold in the winter, but radiators worked well in almost every room (We did not ask for help getting the other radiators to work better.) It was at first a challenge to find this small town about 20 minutes from Darmstadt. But we loved it! A pizza restaurant is right across the street, a lovely bakery about two blocks away, a great butcher as well as quality restaurants nearby. (honestly, the best vanilla ice cream in the world at the Landhof, and not-to-be-missed saurbraten) The cafe up top (close to the castle) has incredible desserts and a view to match. The owner answered my many questions by phone, by mail and by emails. She contacted neighbors on our behalf and even arranged for a beautiful welcome basket of food and locally produced items. (and had a dish set up with food for our dog!) Nearby attractions that we loved were Lindenfels castle, the Darmstadt baths and Burg Frankenstein. Further, but still less than an hour away, we had great times in Frankfurt at the Christmas market, in Heidelburg (castle and pedestrian shopping area, with more great places to eat!), and in Worms with its many historical sites and churches. We had trouble getting an internet signal, but the owner is trying to get a system hooked up for the house. Some of our party had learned a little bit of German before going. This is extremely helpful, and respectul of culture.. I highly recommend this listing as a wonderful place to experience life in central Germany.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, adventure seekers.

This large home in Fischbachtel is a distance from Frankfurt but this small village is a nice place to stay. There is a wonderful restaurant & a local Christmas market. The house is very large & everything is provided including a supply of kitchen utensils, pots, pans, etc. The beds are comfortable. The house was very dusty & needs a deep cleaning. The carpet on the stairs should be replaced & the stairs should have a rail, not a rope!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This is a unique property located in a quiet, rural community. I recommend it for those who have an appreciation for history and anyone looking for lots of space. This is a good option for anyone with kids, since there is both outdoor and indoor areas that are good for exploring and playing. It is located about 15 minutes from Darmstadt, a medium-sized city with good shopping and restaurants. We spent quite a bit of time in the local region, including a tour of Schloss Lichtenberg (castle in walkling distance behind the property). We spent two afternoons in Darmstadt seeing the sights and doing some shopping. Also rode the train into Frankfurt, toured the Römerberg area and had a nice dinner there. We also took several driving day trips as well. Heidelberg and the Weinstrasse region are good options. The rural location of the property does add to the drive time (takes about 30 minutes reach the nearest autobahn) however the local area is very beautiful and makes for nice scenery. Good restaurants and grocery stores are within 10 minutes drive.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children.

We chose this location to use as a "home base" for our 2 week stay in Europe. It is located in a quaint area that is just a relatively short drive to the A3 or A5. We were able to to many day trips from here...Mannheim/Heidleberg, Wertheim, Rudersheim, Lindberg... There house was spacious and comfortable for the entire family. We were welcomed with a lovely basket of goodies and local wine. The bakery, just a short walk down the block, provided wonderful treats from a staff who was very patient with our non German speaking skills and the local restaurant had an english version of the menu. We ate there twice and were not disappointed either time.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, age 55+.
