Dune Top Romantic Solitude & Awe-Inspiring Panoramic Lake Mich Views
- Minimum stay:2-3 nights
- Internet:No
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Nestled alone atop a 4 acre sand dune with panoramic views of Lake Michigan, this highly unique, contemporary, clean, fully equipped, artistically decorated cottage is an out of this world experience. Couple the cottage and the almost surrealistically beautiful, completely private site that includes trees, woods, & dunescape, and it is impossible not to fall in love. Private 400-ft association sandy and shallow beach on the big lake is an easy walk on our private path, as are two other public beach sites (one at warm and shallow Stony Lake, the other on Lake Michigan). If you ever want to leave the wonderful cottage, fabulous
deck & breathtaking views, the area abounds with wonderful orchards, farm markets, state parks, lighthouses, hiking trails, cultural attractions, arts performances, live music, dune buggy rides, golf, boat rentals, biking paths, & antique stores.
Site features: Parking for your vehicle is at the bottom of the 100 + stairs (w/3 built-in resting benches) that you climb to access the cottage & the four acre site. No worry, as a motorized tram pulls all your gear to the top. The partly wooded & partly open dunescape is truly the ultimate private, romantic setting. Once on this perch, the diverse views are so awe-inspiring that you may never want to move. Plenty of freighters on the horizon, stars in the domed night sky & wildlife on the dune to keep you interested. Wildlife includes bald eagles, pileated woodpeckers, hummingbirds, deer, squirrel & fox: get up in the morning to spot their tracks on the dune. A trail behind the house leads to the tip top of the dune for even more magnificent views. Follow the beach path to our beautiful private association Lake Michigan beach (shared by only a handful of families) which is sandy & shallow.
Cottage features: The newly stained, unique, nearly round, 15-sided wooden hurricane style cottage has 6 sliding glass doors allowing stupendous lake, dune & wooded views from every room. The afternoon sun is so bright that you'll need your sunglasses in the kitchen! The wooden 100+ stairs, 2,000 sq. ft deck (also newly stained), & circular 4 ft walkway around the cottage provide easy access to/ from each room as well as lots of extra living space. Little private niches with furniture, plantings & views allow you to follow the sun around the decks all day & evening in any season.
Amenities: We call it luxury camping! Our modern, clean & well organized cottage has oak floors throughout (except carpeted bedrooms), new stylish furniture, large sisal floor rugs, colorful artistic decor, nice bedding & towels, ceiling & standing fans, quality kitchen tools & Fiesta dinnerware, stack washer & dryer, & elect baseboard heat. The huge multi-level decks are furnished with comfy chairs & cushions, a dining table w/ sun umbrella, gas grill, an outdoor hot shower (truly sublime), clothesline with a view, daylillies & loads of beautiful potted flowers ... which all make it hard to come inside to enjoy the highly cool cottage interior!

This was a wonderful and clean cottage with spectacular views to go with it. My wife and I watched the sunset every night from the upper deck, the weather was perfect! When we first arrived we noticed how clean this cottage was and the amount of space there is to relax and cook. The kitchen was fully stocked with any cooking utensil you could need, living room was very comfy and the bathrooms were big enough to fit both of us. This cottage has the perfect location and I will recommend it to my friends and family and I will rent this property again in the future.Who knows maybe a 1st year anniversary trip will be in store for the Meffert cottage. P.S. Doreen was very friendly and helpful throughout our entire stay.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Descriptions given at HomeAway were accurate. The property is well managed and the owner provided careful and detailed information. The whole thing was a really pleasant experience. The cottage is situated on the top of a sand dune and accessed through a 120 step staircase. This provide a unique location with a supreme sunset view of Lake Michigan and total isolation and privacy. Stony Lake runs into Lake Michigan right at the beach and provide an excellent basis for swimming and playing in the water. My nice and nephew absolutely loved that part. A stay in this cottage is definitely recommendable and I would love to go back another time.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We came to this dream dune cottage for our first anniversary and had the most outstanding vacation. The owner was helpful, kind and great to work with. The cottage was cozy, comfortable and adorable. As runners we loved jogging through the quaint town and discovering charming, local spots. Our favorite find was walking into town, renting tubes and tubing down the lazy creek into Lake Michigan to play in the waves until the sun went down. We enjoyed the local restaurant as well as staying in and grilling on the porch at sunset. We had a blast at a local rodeo and horse back riding, but we found we were always anxious to get back to the beautiful, peaceful view from the cottage patio where we put our feet up at night and sipped coffee in the morning. We hope to go back every summer. Dune cottage has stolen our hearts!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We really enjoyed our time at this dune top getaway. Thiis the most unique vacation home we have ever experienced. The views are amazing and the sunets are truly something to see. The steps are a handful, but really add to the overall unique and wonderful experience. Our kids had a blast, and we are planning to go back again in 2011. The cottage was clean and comfortable, and the owners are very nice and really want you to have a good time and make some wonderful memories.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We (2 adults, one child 3 1/2 years old) spent one week beginning of July this year at the cottage. It was the perfect size for 3 persons, the view outside was incredible. We didn't mind walking up the stairs every day for being in such a nice place. The cottage was clean, well equiped and had a personal touch which I specially liked. The walking distance to the beach was ok. The place itself is kind of remote, but Stony Lake was close and even Shelby Dunes was easy to reach by car. We can recommend the place. The owners are very kind and provided a good customer service.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.

We've rented a number of places on the Great Lakes & nothing compares to this little gem. Like your very own tree house; you climb an ambitious but manageable set of stairs, into a canopy of soaring hardwood trees and emerge onto a dramatic deck offering an unprecedented view of Lake Michigan. Once up on the dune, among the treetops, you'll not believe the beauty, privacy & tranquility. After you recover from the awe-inspiring view you'll discover a comfortable, immaculate, home that is delightfully-furnished and fully-equipped for a weekend getaway or a week-long stay. The lake is an easy walk where you can enjoy an entire day of sun and swimming. Or head into Silver Lake for ATV rentals, putt-putt golf and ice cream. Just make sure you get home in time for the breathtaking sunsets. Our favorite activity, if we aren't relaxing on the deck or swimming at the beach, is driving the surrounding area sampling and buying the amazing local produce. The landlords are lovely, responsive, people who are truly interested in making your stay wonderful. For a trip you will really love, and always remember, rent this adorable and comfortable Lake Michigan home.Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

There's nothing like being perched at the top of a sand dune with all the comforts of home and a wide angle view af Lake Michigan-not to mention total privacy. Talk about a great place to de-stress, this is it. Great swimming and walks along the beach. I've seen a lot of Lake Michigan shorelines and this area is the best yet. If you don't mind climbing a few stairs to get there, it's like a stairway to heaven.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

I’ve had the chance to spend several weekends at this cabin. From sitting on the deck reading to the spectacular sunsets to the countless hours on the beach this is a place made for creating great memories. Some of the best photos I’ve ever taken were shot in and around the cabin. It was clean, well stocked and very homey. When we did venture out we found ourselves 4-wheeling on the dunes, playing mini-golf and enjoying a great dinner at a casual but elegant restaurant. A weekend or more here is one you wont soon forget.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
