North Captiva harkens back to the way the Keys and a lot of other spots in Florida used to be in the halcyon Hemingway days. No crowds, no neon, no traffic. Neighboring Sanibel and Captiva Islands were like this 30 years ago, before a causeway was built connecting them to a mainland of anxious tourists and hungry backhoes. It's obvious the folks around Safety Harbor are in no hurry to have history repeat itself.
Upper Captiva possesses no hotels, shops or public docking facilities to attract or accommodate uninvited visitors. There isn't even a bridge or ferry to get you here, the sole access from the mainland being a pre-arranged water taxi. Once ashore, you'll find transportation strictly limited to electric golf carts and bicycles, the 80 or so year-round residents disdaining any thoughts of paved roads or traditional motorized vehicles.
For your Island transportation, you will have access to a four-person golf cart (included in your rental price). Should you need additional carts, you may rent them through the Club (availability is limited)
You will have access to Safety Harbor Club which offers resort swimming pools, tennis courts and waterfront restaurant. The Boats & Fun Shop offers boat rentals, jet ski rentals and fishing equipment rental.
North Captiva Island is located north of Captiva Island/Sanibel and south of Cayo Costa. Part of the Charlotte Harbour chain, North Captiva Island is approximately four miles long and one-half mile wide at its widest point. Accessibility to this tropical retreat is just 20 minutes by boat from Pine Island. In addition, there is a 2400-foot, privately-owned, grass airstrip for pilots of light aircraft.
The water is warm and the sand is white. The entire island is a big beach, and you can walk for miles with nothing but sand under your feet, dolphins to your side, and pelicans flying overhead. The only other people here are your neighbors; the beaches are never crowded.
Whether you kayak around Foster Point, fish for snook in the mangroves, shell for sand dollars, build sandcastles in the sand, or just enjoy the sunshine, you will have a vacation to remember.
