Aerial shot of Hale`Aha Kai showing the beach and ocean
Location: Punaluu, North Shore Oahu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (About 40-45 minutes from Waikiki, Honolulu & the Airport)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 2-5)
Keywords: House
More than anywhere else on Oahu, Punalu`u may be the most reminiscent of the Hawaii of the early to mid 20th century era. You will find that Punalu`u is a low-key, laid-back, friendly community.
Hale'Aha Kai... which means 'House of Gathering by the Sea,' is a beautiful artist's retreat that is located directly on Hale'Aha Beach in the tropical little town of Punalu'u, on the island of Oahu. This three bedroom, two bathroom Fully Air-Conditioned home is graciously decorated in a traditional Polynesian style with comfortable, over-sized bamboo furnishings throughout. Original art by the owner and other local artists decorate the home. The living and dining room are both oceanfront with views of the ocean, beach and Koolau Mountains, from Laie to Kaneohe. We offer free Wi-Fi Internet, a 40" HDTV with DVR and premium cable package(you'll never need to miss your favorite TV programs while out sightseeing!) and VOIP telephone service (free calling to the Mainland USA and Canada). We also have dozens of games to choose from.
All three bedrooms have air conditioning. The oceanfront, master bedroom has a king-size bed with comfortable plush-top mattress, 100% cotton linens, goose-down pillows, cable TV/VCR/DVD/DVR, and its own private bathroom. The additional bedrooms each have two twins, one in a trundle. These rooms share the second full bathroom. All three bedrooms have ceiling fans and air-conditioning. In addition, there is an outdoor, after-swim shower.
Outside, the yard is fully landscaped and has a large beachfront deck with built-in seating and lanai furniture. Relax in our five comfortable outdoor rocking chairs. There is also a very unique, coconut log raft that is 'anchored' in the backyard. It is perfect for sunning during the day, a cocktail at sunset, and watching the moon rise over the ocean at night. The sunrises and moonrises at Hale'Aha Kai are spectacular.
Hale'Aha Kai sits directly on Hale'Aha Beach, which has soft-white sand and calm turquoise-blue ocean water. This is a year-round swimming beach that is perfect the entire family. Punalu`u is on the NE corner of Oahu, so there is close access to the North Shore if you want to attend a pro surf meet or visit Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Haleiwa. Punaluu does not have the dangerous beach currents, shore break and high surf that the beaches on the North Shore of Oahu experience during Spring, Winter and Fall. Our beach offers calmer, family-friendly swimming. The ocean conditions are also excellent for snorkeling and shore fishing. You will have a lot of privacy at Hale'Aha Kai. There are no attached dwellings or other structures on the property... only the house itself. Our property offers the BEST views of the beach, ocean, Punaluu Bay and surrounding mountains. We offer gated parking and the property is partially fenced for additional privacy.
Punalu'u is located only 40-45 minutes from Honolulu International Airport, downtown Honolulu, and Waikiki Beach, yet it seems worlds away in a beautiful country setting. There are two general stores within walking distance. Within a few minutes drive you will find a full-size grocery store, movie theater, fast food choices, and some interesting local restaurants. If you need to check-in with the rest of the world, Hale`Aha Kai provives free high-speed Wi-Fi cable internet access for your notebook computer. We also provide VOIP internet telephone service, with free calling to the continental USA and Canada.
For activities, there is on-site kayaking with two ocean kayaks for exploring the reefs surrounding Punaluu, there are Kahuku and Kualoa Ranches for horseback riding, the Polynesian Cultural Center with its Pacific Islander villages, luau, and shows, Pounder's Beach - famous for its great bodysurfing, Turtle Bay Resort with its two championship golf courses, the North Shore - famous for its wintertime big wave surfing, and many excellent hiking trails are located within a few minutes drive of the house. If you are a paraglider, Kahana Bay, one of the premier paragliding sites in the world, is within minutes of our home.
For added value, we have taken into consideration some of the hidden costs that might be overlooked by our vacationers, especially in Hawaii, where prices for staples can be overwhelming. Stocking your newly arrived to rental with "basics" can really add up. For this reason, we supply our rental with lots of "extras" that many rentals do not offer, such as paper goods (enough toilet paper and paper towels for the duration of your stay), trash bags, foil, plastic wrap, full-size soaps, laundry softener and detergent, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, a nice selection of herbs and spices, coffee filters, and many other essential every-day items that you would normally need to purchase on your own.
Please note that we only offer "Specials" on last minute reservations for those traveling within two weeks of the requested reservation period requested. Please keep this in mind when making your reservation request, we thank you in advance. We feel that we offer a high value property for a great price. We do not respond to inquiries that do not include a full name or working telephone number so please include these with your inquiry.

Can't wait to go back to paradise

This review is way overdue. My husband, myself and our two young children (5 & 2yrs) spent a glorious week in this amazing home in September 2010. Debbie has made sure that her guests have everything, and I mean everything they need. The kitchen cabinets are filled with every condiment you can imagine. There's enough food in the pantry to get you by in case you arrive late and stores are closed. Everything from rice grains, oils, butter, etc. Pots and pans galore along with all kinds of silverware and glasses. She even had sippy cups and spiderman plastic spoons! We never had to buy dishwashing liquid or garbage bags or laundry detergent. The bathroom was well stocked as well with all kinds of shampoos and conditioners. On our first full day there we realized we'd forgotten to buy sun block. Well guess what? Debbie had two bottles in the medicine cabinet. We had the beach all to ourselves with the occasional couple strolling by walking along the shore. My children LOVED getting up just as the sun was rising and we would all run to the beach in our pajamas and watch the beautiful colors of the sky as the sun rose. My 5 year old still talks about kayaking in the blue waters with Daddy. Debbie has more water sports equipment than a store! And life jackets of EVERY size. We felt like we had the whole island to ourselves even though there was another home right next door. We actually spent alot more time at the house than we thought we would. Stores are a short walk or short drive away. We can't say enough about our time here. The house is beautiful and we took care of it as if it was our own. We loved it and hope to go back there again someday.

It was everything it was advertised to be. We loved it. Deborah has made the house have all the comforts of home. In some cases its more than what you would expect. It was far enough away from Honolulu to find yourself in slowed down summer paradise. It was like having your own personal beach. If you wanted to go sight seeing at Pearl Harbor in was only about an hour away. My wife and I took our two 21 year old sons and their girlfriends. We all had a blast snorkeling/kayaking and spending time on the beach. If you are lucky enough to stay at this property don't miss Ted's Bakery just north of the house. We got in late on Saturday and stopped at the Crouching Lion Restaurant after they closed and we had been traveling 20 hours they were more that a fried they were like a neighbor and took us in after hours and served us dinner. That pretty much sums up Punaluu. The area is very laid back and close early but always hospitable. We will be going back to Hawaii in the future and we will stay here again. Don't miss it.
Owner response:Thanks folr choosing our home for your vacation! We look forward to your return!

The best little beach hideout on the island. I have been to Hawaii almost a dozen times and this was definitely my best stay. Hale`Aha Kai is a great spot for kayaking, exotic cocktails, and epic sunsets. Highly recommended =)

what can i say? everything about the house is great. the beach, all the amenities including snorkel gear, kayaks, lifejackets and so much more. even the dvd library was great. the place was spotless when we arrived, the location was unbelievable and sunrise was breathtaking. owners have provided a fantastic place for anyone to truly appreciate the "other" side of life on the islands. no hustle and bustle here. just a great place to hang your hat and enjoy (even a big screen tv with all cable channels). the deck was perfect for our daily barbecues as well and after dinner cocktails. outside shower right there on the lawn to clean-off after your daily swim or time in the water or just laying on your own private beach. this place had it all. there were four of us and we all felt the same. i hope to come back real soon and this would be the place i would stay. thank you deborah and john for providing such a great place and the house was perfectly located to do everything we wanted to do on the entire island. we covered it all, from hiking up diamond head to enjoying some of the most fantastic beaches in the world. and then to be able to come back to the house and have our own beautiful swimming beach right there at our back door was amazing. thank you for everything. i've been to hawaii 32 times now (of course i'm counting) and this ranks as my favorite place that i have stayed. if anyone is looking for a great place to be based out of on oahu, this is the place for you. aloha, mahalo, ohana (my favorite hawaiian words) richie yacovelli

It's been a month now of wishing we were still there. The place is fantastic! Watch out for the sea turtle - he likes to come out of nowhere when you are snorkeling. I think my wife and I will come back without the 3 kids next time so that we can enjoy it that much more.

We just returned from a two week stay at Hale'Aha Kai. We were there for our 25th Anniversary and Deborah made it a very memorable one for us. The house is not just a house, it is a HOME !! It has every amenity that you will need on your holiday plus more. The home is very clean and the beds are extremely comfortable. So much so, that we wanted to take them home with us. We had turtles swimming out front many mornings and a couple of evenings we had whales jumping out of the water on the outside of the reef. We enjoyed being able to go snorkeling and kayaking anytime we wanted and many days that is all we did. Deborah has also done the job of looking for activities to do, for you. She has a bulletin board with pamphlets and discount coupons and has many books with suggestions for what to do and see on the island. We took her advice on many things and were not disappointed on any of them. Unfortunately we did not meet Deborah on our trip but we talked to her many times. She was always available for any questions we had. If you are on this site looking for a "home away from home", you may as well stop looking, because you have found the best valued home on Oahu. If we ever manage to get back to Hawaii, we know where we will be staying. Thank you again Deborah for making our 25th Anniversary such a special one. Mahalo!! After looking at hundreds of properties to rent for our trip to Oahu, I got goosebumps when I came to the Hale Aha Kai website. I knew instantaneouly that it was the place for us and it was even better than I imagined!! We just returned from 9 days on Oahu to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary. Being the nice parents we are, we took our four kids with us(ages 6-15) and spent 3 days in Waikiki and 5 glorious days at Hale Aha Kai. It was heaven on earth from the breathtaking location to Deborah & John's '10' star accommodations (on a scale of 1 to 5 stars!!) I can't thank the Urban's enough for opening their fun & lovely home to us. I can't wait to return! Mahalo!!
