Air-conditioned and secluded In the Lee is in Nantucket Town's Old Historic District facing an 18th-Century quiet, working windmill. It is only a 10-minute delightful walk to shops, restaurants, theaters, beaches and Nantucket Harbor, and a 2-minute walk to the Island-wide shuttle bus stop and bike paths. Guests can walk to Brant Point, Jetties, Children’s, Francis Street and Steps beaches.
Families can enjoy In the Lee alone or w/ the nearby magnificent four-bedroom house with a wraparound porch and Adirondack chairs (see # 105381) for multigenerational reunions. This family compound sleeps 12. With this superb location -- the Island's best -- no car is necessary, but both houses have two off-street parking spaces at the end of the long, winding driveway.
This tucked-away home has a tile floor and hand-hooked hand-dyed wool rugs with Nantucket nautical and floral themes, a brick patio for relaxing, showering and grilling and beyond it is a grass backyard with enclosed shower.
Other Amenities : In the Lee also has complimentary high-speed Internet (WiFi), a washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave oven, blender, coffeemaker, all linens, beach towels, all cooking utensils, fish poacher, lobster pot, charcoal BBQ grill, beach chairs (they can be carried or worn on the back and have a pouch for a cooler), books, cable TV, VCR, DVD player, sound system, children's toys, telephone, answering machine, and fresh flowers.
Caretaker: The caretaker lives nearby. She therefore is able to respond quickly to tenants' needs, ensuring their comfort and enjoyment. She gives tenants literature, Island maps and the Nantucket Restaurant guide. For a fee, she will pick up groceries and supplies to stock the refrigerator before tenants arrive.

There are two houses on this propery, one of which called: In The Lee. It is by far one of the best cottages on the island in regards to location and design. I have stayed at In The Lee twice and would repeat my stay time and time again. The cottage is in a peaceful location with the perfect balance of everything. You have your own private patio that is furnished with a grill. Inside you have a washer and dryer, a full size bed and a pull out futon/couch, kitchen/dinning room, and even beach chairs to take with you on your excursions. It's an easy walk downtown and just as easy to walk to the local grocery. Cabs, renting a car, or even renting bikes can get expensive on the island and having such a central location to everything being at this property makes visiting the island easy and affordable to get around. If you're looking for a stay when you can have no stress and truly get away in your own peaceful abode this is the cottage to stay.Owner response: This young woman and her three friends were perfect tenants who are welcome to come back to our one-bedroom house as many times as they wish. As a matter of fact, this summer they have asked to rent our four-bedroom house, which sleeps eight, because their group has expanded. We are happy they have asked to return but sad that the house is not available. But because they have been such good tenants, I was delighted to refer them to a friend who has apartments in Town.

I stayed at "In The Lee" with my girlfriend for a long weekend at the beginning of the summer and had a very pleasant time. The owner was very considerate and helpful when any issue arose. For example, when we first arrived our flight was a bit delayed causing us to miss the scheduled time when we would meet the owner to retrieve the keys. This posed no issue as we quickly worked out a solution that would let us into the home that evening and meet the owner the following day. The home was very clean upon our arrival and provided all the listed amenities except for air-conditioning. This also was quickly remedied as, upon our request, one was promptly installed. I believe the reason it wasn't installed prior to our arrival was there hadn't been any particularly hot days yet on the island, so it seemed unnecessary. "In The Lee" is about a 10-15 minute walk to Main St. where many of Nantucket's attractions reside. I would highly recommend renting/bringing a bicycle to get around during the summer. The home is also about a 25 minute bike ride to Surfside Beach; just long enough to work up a sweat so that jumping into the freezing North-Atlantic water is actually refreshing! My girlfriend and I had a great time on the island thanks to the comfort and location provided by "In The Lee".Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My wife and I had an amazing week long stay in this wonderfully cosy home. For those looking for lodging close to home with a nice, private backyard, this is it! The property was clean, had all the amenities one could ask for (towels, dishes, etc.) and the owner was extremely attentive responding to all of our questions within minutes!! Overall, a great time was had at this wonderful home away from home.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This review is word-for-word from a frequent In the Lee tenant: My husband and I have stayed at In the Lee many times over the years. We've always found it lovely, peaceful and charming. Sun-filled during the day and blissfully quiet at night, it's truly a special place, tucked behind the historic windmill. Perfect for a solo traveler or a couple, the house is fully equipped with a washer-dryer, outdoor patio with barbecue, air conditioning, dishwasher and a private driveway. However, you don't need a car to stay at In the Lee as it's in an ideal location – a short walk to the center of town and an easy bike ride to the island's many beautiful beaches. In the Lee's kind, conscientious owner is always making thoughtful improvements to the property – outside and in – taking great care to provide a pleasant stay for tenants in the hopes that they will return. There is always a helpful, knowledgeable caretaker on call if any needs arise and the cleaning crew does a very thorough job of making the house fresh for each new arrival. In the Lee is a wonderful year-round choice for visitors to Nantucket.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

My 8-week rental of In the Lee was a good experience. It is a darling little cottage with everything you could possibly wish for, although I had trouble with WiFi access. The space was great for one and would work certainly for two (although the closet is small). The cottage is clean, comfortable and well-furnished. The caretaker was readily accessible and came by regularly. The photos are spot-on. Town is a quick bike ride down the hill or a 10 minute walk away. This was my first experience on Nantucket and staying here was definitely a positive aspect of the experience.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: In the Lee's Internet connection is now excellent. An experienced information technologist with an international company has installed a long-range wireless bridge between the main house and In the Lee. He amplified the signal. All our guests must do now to get on-line is plug in their computers--a password is not even necessary. Wireless Internet is complimentary to our guests. Re: the closet. In the Lee has much storage space in a bureau; deep drawers in two tables; and shelves in a bathroom cabinet, under the vanity and in the closet. That closet is so long that it has two separate doors. The house comfortably sleeps four people.

I would definitely stay here again. The location is great. We spent several afternoons enjoying champagne on the main house's well-appointed wraparound porch watching the sunset and enjoying the breeze in front of the windmill. Also, it's very easy to get into town (a 3-min. bike ride down the hill or a 10- minute walk), and returning up the hill is enough as to feel like it's a country estate. Both the main house (Windswept) and the nearby smaller house (In the Lee) were charming inside and out and very clean. Further, the houses were more than accommodating to our large group. We were at max occupancy--12--but it didn't feel like it. The houses make for a perfect base of operations for a fun Nantucket vacation with family or friends. JohnDid you find this review helpful?
