Cheerful, romantic, secluded and air-conditioned In the Lee is on a hill, one of the Island's highest points, in Nantucket Town's Old Historic District. It faces a quiet, working windmill built in 1746, which grinds corn. No other Nantucket house has a better view of this historic windmill, the country's longest continuously operating windmill.

This home is a 10-minute delightful walk--only two turns--to Main Street's shops, restaurants, movie and live theaters, post office, drug stores, grocery stores and the town's several beaches. It is only a two-minute walk to the Island-wide shuttle bus stop and bike paths. With its superb location--Nantucket's best--no car is necessary, but In the Lee has two off-street parking spaces at the end of the long, winding driveway.

Families can also enjoy In the Lee with our nearby magnificent four-bedroom house for multigenerational reunions (see listing #22624). Together the two houses are a family compound high atop Mill Hill that sleeps 12.

This tucked-away home has a tile floor and hand-hooked hand-dyed wool rugs with Nantucket nautical and floral themes, a large yard with flowers, plants and trees, an outdoor enclosed hot/cold after-swim shower, and a brick patio in the rear with a large teak table and four teak chairs. Guests cook succulent Nantucket scallops there on the charcoal grill. From tall and deep blackberry bushes on the long, winding driveway, they can pick juicy, plump berries for pies, cakes, and muffins or eat them instantly.

The caretaker lives a short distance away and responds immediately to tenants to ensure their enjoyment of the Island and this secluded home. He greets guests to give them Nantucket literature and maps. For a small fee, he will shop for groceries and supplies to stock the refrigerator before tenants arrive.

This review is word-for-word from a frequent In the Lee tenant: My husband and I have stayed at In the Lee many times over the years. We've always found it lovely, peaceful and charming. Sun-filled during the day and blissfully quiet at night, it's truly a special place, tucked behind the historic windmill. Perfect for a solo traveler or a couple, the house is fully equipped with a washer-dryer, outdoor patio with barbecue, air conditioning, dishwasher and a private driveway. However, you don't need a car to stay at In the Lee as it's in an ideal location – a short walk to the center of town and an easy bike ride to the island's many beautiful beaches. In the Lee's kind, conscientious owner is always making thoughtful improvements to the property – outside and in – taking great care to provide a pleasant stay for tenants in the hopes that they will return. There is always a helpful, knowledgeable caretaker on call if any needs arise and the cleaning crew does a very thorough job of making the house fresh for each new arrival. In the Lee is a wonderful year-round choice for visitors to Nantucket.

Secluded House Faces 18th-Century Quiet, Working Windmill

Summer 2010

Date of Stay: 07/03/10 Review Submitted: 11/04/10

My 8-week rental of In the Lee was a good experience. It is a darling little cottage with everything you could possibly wish for, although I had trouble with WiFi access. The space was great for one and would work certainly for two (although the closet is small). The cottage is clean, comfortable and well-furnished. The caretaker was readily accessible and came by regularly. The photos are spot-on. Town is a quick bike ride down the hill or a 10 minute walk away. This was my first experience on Nantucket and staying here was definitely a positive aspect of the experience.

Owner response:In the Lee's Internet connection is now excellent. An experienced information technologist with an international company has installed a long-range wireless bridge between the main house and In the Lee. He amplified the signal. All our guests must do now to get on-line is plug in their computers--a password is not even necessary. Wireless Internet is complimentary to our guests. Re: the closet. In the Lee has much storage space in a bureau; deep drawers in two tables; and shelves in a bathroom cabinet, under the vanity and in the closet. That closet is so long that it has two separate doors. The house comfortably sleeps four people.

Praise of Both Windmill Houses

I would definitely stay here again. The location is great. We spent several afternoons enjoying champagne on the main house's well-appointed wraparound porch watching the sunset and enjoying the breeze in front of the windmill. Also, it's very easy to get into town (a 3-min. bike ride down the hill or a 10- minute walk), and returning up the hill is enough as to feel like it's a country estate. Both the main house (Windswept) and the nearby smaller house (In the Lee) were charming inside and out and very clean. Further, the houses were more than accommodating to our large group. We were at max occupancy--12--but it didn't feel like it. The houses make for a perfect base of operations for a fun Nantucket vacation with family or friends. John
