The CITY of BARGA, one of Italy's officially designated most beautiful medieval walled cities, is the “jewel in the crown” of Tuscany's unspoiled Garfagnana recalling the height of Tuscan civilization with noble palazzi, churches with art treasures, tiny gardens with roses, geraniums, medieval passages.

Its elevation offers relief from Tuscany’s oppressive lowland summer heat. Its grandiose natural beauty and proximity to the Italian Riviera make the city and surrounding region a desired summer retreat for Italian families. The “new town” has a lively contemporary energy with its weekly market and a full range of city services such as a hospital, car rental, banking, internet cafes, etc. while "old Barga" is center stage the year round for fairs, pageants and parades.

Each time one enters THE PALAZZO ANGELIO, one experiences a uniqueness of being, an authentic renaissance aesthetics, a grandiose inspiration and a stylistic purity of calm nobility, festive mood and exquisite harmony of style. The flat's 300 square meters (3,000 square feet) are decked with five hundred year old beamed and paneled chestnut ceilings four to five meters high (14 - 18 feet) . Its intricately patterned parquet floors of East African teak and ebony are irreplaceable. The unusually large rooms are arranged in palazzo fashion, a sequence of long vistas, and furnished with antique and contemporary pieces.

Each room has a magnificent view, either onto the countryside and mountains beyond, or into the city and the Piazza below, the Italian “theatre of life” with children at play, working artists and writers from different countries chatting with local people, restaurants and cafes, making up a vital community small enough to feel intimate and to be enjoyed, and without automobile traffic! Bedrooms are spacious and each has a writing desk and a seating area for being alone time and privacy. Two have a suite character with a joining bathroom and doors separating the unit from common spaces. Two balconies, one from the Grand Salon and one accessible from a bedroom suite, show off art neouveau villas, a broad valley the dramatic peaks of the magnificent Appuan Alps.

Within 100 meters of the front door are three piazzas with bars, cafes, wine shops, fine restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, a public library and an English language library, and a 17th century opera house, fully restored, Garfagnana's nature begins at the city's gates with well marked trail heads, In spring and summer, forests and meadows are ablaze with crocus, narcissus, violets, and capers, all is part of an extensive national “nature park” system. The forests abound with streams, wildlife and fish, and a network of shelters to accommodate overnight hikes. The Appuan Alps hold limestone caves, many as yet unexplored and the Serchio river in the valley is one of Europe’s clearest and is stocked with salmon and trout. Its broad alluvial palins are ideal for horse-back riding (Barga's equestrian club offers horses for fifteen euros per hour) and its roads ideal for bicycling. Local gymnasium, golf, mountaineering, spelunking, swimming at the local pool and skiing at Italy’s famous ski area, Abetone (winter).

Ferry service from Livorno to Elba, Palermo and the entire Mediterranean
