Welcome to Northern Lights Vacation Home. Our property is located in the Flathead Valley in Northwest Montana along the Swan River. From here you can easily travel to Glacier National Park, ski Whitefish Mountain, dine at fine restaurants in Bigfork village or visit the art galleries. The Flathead Valley is easily accessible by air (Glacier International Airport), train (Amtrak) or car.
The surrounding area abounds with recreational opportunities. Visitors can walk out the door to enjoy the beauty of the Swan River or plan adventurous trips to Glacier Park for the day then return for dinner and theatre in Bigfork. The countless rivers and lakes provide plenty of opportunity for water sports.
The house is just minutes from downtown Bigfork (3 miles) accessible by car or by bicycle on the Swan River Nature Trail. Bigfork is renowned for its galleries, fine restaurants, summer theatre and recreation on Flathead Lake. This 28- mile long lake has superb water clarity and recreational opportunities. Glacier National Park is only 39 miles away. Big Mountain ski area offers summer chairlift rides to the top for hiking and views into Glacier Park.
Our timber frame style home was constructed in 1993 following green building standards. The home commands expansive views of the Swan Mountain Range. The vaulted ceilings, large kitchen, timber-frame beams and wood floors create a comfortable space to vacation. In the summer season indoor air temperatures can be set with the whole house air conditioning system.
In the winter, the ground source heat pump and forced air system keep the house a comfortable even temperature augmented by a cozy Norwegian gas stove. The full kitchen contains all the amenities including a 4-burner gas stove and convection oven. The floor plan was designed to bring the outdoors into the house and make it easy for adventurers to plan their trips. The adjacent Northern Lights Guest Cottage features a queen bed, full bath/shower and studio kitchen.
The property provides opportunities to relax or quickly access adjacent recreational opportunities. We have a large garden and a number of fruit trees including apple, cherry, and pear. Swan River Road provides quick access on a rural road with little traffic to the scenic Swan River Nature Trail with access to biking, hiking, kayaking, fishing or solitude along the river. This section of Swan River road is part of the Continental Divide Mountain bike route--quite biker friendly.
Owners John and Robin and their son Fischer are avid outdoor adventurers. They ski, bike, climb, raft, kayak, hike and fish. They can help guests plan trips to Glacier Park, Jewel basin hiking trails, fishing trips on the Swan or Flathead River, or whitewater rafting on the Middle Fork Flathead. Name the adventure and they can most likely share their direct experience helping you minimize the planning time so you can get to the adventure. They have sea kayaks available on the property on a limited basis.
Need larger or smaller accommodations? We also have the Northern Lights Guest Cottage, built in 1998,containing sleeping quarters for two in a queen, studio kitchen and full bath. Inquire about the cottage if you need additional space or just want a smaller, more private space.

I just want to thank John for letting us stay at his wonderful place. The home was great, the views exceptional, and the location perfect. The house was exceptionally clean and the amenities perfect. There was great fishing and hiking nearby, as well as restaurants and shopping. We stayed with my parents as well as our young children and the home was spacious enough for all of us. The kids loved the cherries growing in the yard as well as the deer that showed up every evening before we went to bed. John was very helpful, courteous, and honest in our dealings with him. I would recommend this vacation home to anyone.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children.

Our family of 6 had a great time here. There is lots of room to run and play. 10 minutes to Echo Lake, 10 minutes to downtown Bigfork with great restaurants and shopping, and also close to Flathead lake. Jewel Basin hikes are beautiful. The house is clean and well-kept, the kitchen is fantastic, and we loved the geothermal climate control, much better than air conditioning.
