We are travelers who eschew the canned tourist experience; we prefer flexibility to choose our own activities and enjoy a bit of cultural immersion. We enjoy creature comforts but expect value for money. Casa Dena was the perfect home base for our ideal vacation. Its location 90 minutes south of Cancun was just past the last large bastion of large scale resorts, a short distance north of the town of Tulum. We made several easy half-day trips to local Mayan ruins, a variety of beaches, lagoons, and cenotes with great swimming and snorkeling, and a tour of the Biosphere, a vast coastal nature preserve south of Tulum. With an early morning departure for the famous ruins at Chichen Itza, we were able to beat the arrival of the tour buses, have lunch in Valladolid, and return in time for a dip in the pool before dinner. My first view through the front door of the house to the beach - within steps of the back door - was even more idyllic than the picture on the web. The house was spacious, comfortable, well appointed, and immaculately cleaned and maintained by the wonderful on-site caretakers, Daisy and Armando. The husband and wife team made us feel welcome and almost seemed to read our minds in anticipating our needs. For a very reasonable cost, they can cook delicious meals and do laundry. We made trips to a nearby supermarket and cooked many of our own meals in the large, well-equipped kitchen. We gave the blender quite a workout every evening during the cocktail hour! The only thing that marred an otherwise perfect stay was a couple of power outages that lasted the better part of the night our first week. We were told that the length of these outages was very unusual, and by the second week, we’d forgotten all about them.

We rented Casa Dena for a week long stay in early March, 2013. We were a group of six adults (three couples). The house exceeded our expectations! It was very roomy, with lots of areas to relax and enjoy the sunshine and warm weather. The roof deck is just amazing, from sunrise to sunset. The kitchen is large, open, and has the best Most days we stayed right at the house. It was perfect being right on the beach; everyone could take their time and enjoy their individual morning, and saunter out to the beach whenever they were ready. The beach right outside the house was all coral and you could not enter the water without reef runners (though you should not be standing on the coral anyways, as you can kill it). You could easily walk down the beach about five minutes and get in the water there, as well as enjoy the most wonderful ceviche at Chamico's right there on the beach. Daisy and Armando, the house's caretakers, are awesome. Their gentle and friendly nature just resonates. The house was sparkling clean each day and we woke up to a freshly raked beach each morning thanks to Armando. We had them cook for us one evening; it was delicious! Definitely take advantage of that and have them cook for you, you will not be sorry! Sasha is the premise's watch dog and welcome wagon. She is just the sweetest girl, we enjoyed having her around each day. She was happy, friendly, and kept on eye on things. Steve, the owner, is great; he is easy to correspond with via email and answered all our questions prior to booking and visiting. All in all, we absolutely enjoyed our time at Casa Dena, and would highly recommend it if you are visitng Tulum!

My family and I recently rented Casa Dena for a week, and it was phenomenal. The place itself was gorgeous - a beautiful home opening out onto the surf nestled within a natural oasis. The bedrooms and facilities were spacious, and it was the perfect environment for both hanging out and cooking with the family and using as a base to explore the beaches and coves around Tulum. The roof top, with it's couches and double bed was an amazing spot to stare at the stars. The hammocks on the beach provided a luxurious spot for reading and listening to the ocean. Armando and Daisy were wonderful -- attentive, responsive, yet completely non-intrusive. Steve (the owner) was also great to work with (via email). Renting from a stranger based on an internet ad, I obviously had questions about the integrity of the place -- is what was advertised, real. Steve's quick responses and candor -- evening noting that there might be some work going on at the adjacent property and addressing some minor noise issues-- calmed any concerns. In the end, rather than over-promise, Casa Dena was quite the opposite -- so much more beautiful than advertised.

We had 7 people stay over Thanksgiving. The house is gorgeous as are the views. Daisy and Armando are on premise and are great. We had them cook a couple meals for us. Wonderful. The owner was extremely helpful in making our stay exceptional. Very good scuba and snorkeling. Perfect for a laid back restful getaway!

First I have to tell you what a wonderful place Casa Dena is! Halfway thru our trip I asked my husband what his highlight was so far. We both agreed it was the house! We had stayed all over that coast, it's been our only vacation destination for about 17 years. We've stayed at all inclusives, boutique hotels, condos, guest houses and your house is the best of any of them all in one! It was perfect. A bit large for the two of us but thank you for letting just the 2 of us stay. Loved the location because Akumal and Tulum are our favorite spots. It was great being in the middle of both, we headed one way or the other everyday. We never had Daisy and Armando cook, as it was just the two of us and we enjoy cooking when we can while on vacation. The guacamole he made was great, and lasted all week. Armando told us he'd been a cook in Cancum for 12 years, he still has a passion for cooking. All in all, a great trip. Super relaxing. We definitely want to go back, hopefully with more people! Casa Dena would be a great place for a bigger group, but is was unbelievable for the 2 of us. I highly recommend it! Again, thank you so much for renting your great casa. Please send Daisy and Armando our regards. We hope to stay in touch!

This is a wonderful place to stay. Idyllic location. Spacious and well furnished property. Private beach. Friendly and helpful housekeepers. Owners very easy to deal with. We stayed with our "older" family of 4 (aged 15 to 21) and it was perfect for all 6 of us. A very quiet location, within walking distance of Casa Cenote for snorkelling (and diving if you want) and a short drive to Tullum for shops & restaurants. We would happily return but distance from London may mean this will nto be for a few years!

We had 10 guess staying at Casa Dena over Memorial Day weekend and every last one of us fell in love with the house and with Tulum. The house is incredible, beautiful, gorgeous views everywhere you look and it is always immaculate thanks to the lovely and helpful Daisy and Armando. The location is perfect for peace and relaxation while having Tulum and the various restaurants, beach clubs, shopping, ruins, diving, etc within a 10 minute drive. Steve went above and beyond in answering my many many questions and was incredibly helpful as we prepped for our trip, this is huge when traveling anywhere. We were a house full of world travelers and we all agreed this was simply the best vacation EVER and the most beautiful house and location. Everyone left feeling absolutely rejuvenated, so relaxed and refreshed. I can not recommend Casa Dena highly enough and 5 stars seems far too few!!! The entire experience far exceed my expectations....and I was the bride:) Thank you, Steve! You have truly created something beautiful and magical and we were so lucky to have been able to soak it all in.

We stayed at Casa Dena for the second time. The house and beach were impeccable thanks to Daisy and Armando. They cooked pork and chicken mole for us. Excellent meals. I highly recommend Casa Dena for that much needed relaxation time. We're going back next year.

We had an absolutely amazing time at Casa Dena. All of us agree that it was one of the most relaxing and beautiful vacations we have taken, and we owe much of that to Casa Dena. The house was superbly beautiful (the online photos do it no justice), and Daisy and Armando were welcoming and accommodating in every way. We also enjoyed their chicken mole and fish tacos! Some additional highlights from the house include: watching shooting stars at night from the rooftop, playing in the tide pools at the private beach, reading in the hammocks, our first day at Soliman Bay and how amazed we were by the stunning color of the Caribbean, and waking up each morning to the gorgeous views. We also, of course enjoyed much of what Tulum and the Yucatan have to offer, but there's much more we want to see. I hope to be able to return another time. It's definitely a disappointment to be back at home and not to fall asleep to the sound of the waves! Thanks for everything. Also, your prompt responses to my inquiries have been most appreciated. Best Wishes,

My family of 12 spent a wonderful week at Casa Dena in March, 2011. The house was perfect for this size. It was a quiet, restful week. Daisy and Armando could not have been better hosts--cooked breakfast for us each day and two dinners. The beach was great but not for snorkling. We enjoyed the trips to Tulum for all our needs and certainly would recommend Tulum Beach over the town. We have stayed in this area four previous times and Casa Dena was as any house we have rented in the area. Steve was great and fulfilled all the obligations of the rental arrangement. Would recommend it without reservations. Jim McGinnis, Fort Collins, CO

When I first started doing research for our trip to Mexico I found Casa Dena on Home Away.com. I was explaining the property to my brother and he said "are you sure it isn't one of those to good to be true things". Well, it wasn't. Truly this was everything and more then we expected. We arrived and met Armando and Daisy. We found fresh pico, guacamole with cerveza and margaritas in the fridge. We knew this was going to be a great week. Daisy and Armando were nearby but never intrusive, We did have them cook dinner for us one night and it was outstanding. The house, pool and beach area were kept super clean and we enjoyed watching the stars on the roof top. Steve was fabulous with answering all my e-mails regarding the house, area and Mexico prior to arriving. Sasha came every night to let us know she would be watching the grounds in the evening. Thanks Steve and company for a great vacation. Can't wait to return.

My wife (we were married at the house during our stay) picked this home for our wedding trip after exhaustive research online. Steve and family could not have been more supportive and informative before during and after our wonderful stay. I can only echo all that has been said about Daisy and Armando as they are truly wonderful and honorable people. Take the time to talk to them as they are a very wonderful couple and eager to make your stay incredible and in fact work very hard to accomplish this. We did have them prepare our last night's meal and now wish we had them cook a few other meals (I and my friend Ken are pretty good cooks but they are the next level of great authentic local food). From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Bobby until the moment we left all was as promised in the advertising and more. Our wedding planner Jennifer Smith who also owns Turtle Bay restaurant was magnificent and your really need to make the trip up to Akumal and have a meal or two at Turtle Bay or have them cater in. The wedding dinner was outstanding and they make some of the best dessert I have ever had (Natalie you were awesome as well). The area although remote is close enough to many great attractions and we felt 100% safe for the entire trip as this is a very safe area and trouble free if you use the common sense tips provided. We hope to return at some point in the future to enjoy the "home" that Steve and Dena have provided for those fortunate enough to enjoy it. Casa Dena has been one of our best ever vacations.

Casa Dena is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in lovely, lush surroundings, beautiful views of the water, and luxurious living. We spent the week after Xmas there with our family (7 members) and liked the fact that each of the 4 bedrooms had its own full bath. The house is very comfortable and well-equipped, and the couple who lives on the property takes care of all the daily needs. The house is located on a private road, so it's off the "beaten path" but there are two good restaurants very close as well as a diving/kayaking spring. The house is also close to Tulum, beautiful coves and swimming beaches, and excellent restaurants. We ordered several meals--dinners and breakfasts--to be prepared by Armando, and those delicious meals were a high-point of our stay. I would highly recommend turning the food prep over to Arnando and eating out only occasionally!! This is the place to go for a restful vacation and/or active days of diving and snorkeling and surfing. I hope to go back! Sue Tumlinson

Hi Steve, We all had a wonderful time at Casa Dena. You certainly have a beautiful place and very nicely decorated. It is certainly centrally located for visiting all the Mayan Riviera attractions. Daisy and Armando were very nice and helpful and we sure enjoyed the meals they prepared for us. We especially liked gathering on the roof every night to watch the sunset and then the full moon come up over the ocean. The pool and beach toys were a real hit with the kids. The women appreciated all the extras in the kitchen and not having to run out to buy every little thing needed for cooking. Thanks for all you help and advise. Hopefully we will be able to visit again. Curt

Hi Steve, We can not thank you enough for sharing your wonderful house with us. It was perfect. Every morning one of us would say "Ah, just another day in paradise." The ocean breezes kept things reasonably cool (for August, anyway) and kept the mosquitos away when we sat outside at night. The house worked great for kids. When they were upstairs sleeping they couldn't hear us downstairs playing board games and getting loud. They loved the pool and the beach so much we had to drag them away to go other places. I think they would have been happy if we never left the property at all! And all the kids were charmed with Sasha, especially when she was chasing crabs. Daisy and Armando were wonderful. When my daughter found a coconut, Armando opened it for her so she could drink the coconut water and then split it so we could cut out the edible part. It was really an incredible vacation. Thanks again! Kathleen

We just returned from a week at Casa Dena! We had a wonderful time. The house is very large and had plenty of room for our party of 6 to gather together as well as get away if desired. Daisy and Armando were as wonderful as everyone has stated and can make qutie a delicious meal! The house is within an easy drive to many restaurants and activities. We enjoyed meals in Tulum (Le Zebra and Zamas) and down the road from the house (Casa Cenote and Blue Sky). We snorkled, we ATV'd (Punto Venado), we swam with the dolphins (Xel-Ha), we shopped (Playa del Carmen and Tulum), we saw the Tulum ruins and we hung out on the beach and in the hammocks! It was an excellent time! One of the owners, Steve, was very helpful by e-mail with many things and we would highly recommend Casa Dena!

We want everyone to know how wonderful and amazing our stay was at Casa Dena near Tulum. Dena and I have known each other since 2nd grade and when my daughter wanted to get married in Cancun they offered to share their dream vacation home with us for the big day. So we did just that! Steve and Dena have the ultimate paradise vacation home and are willing to share this beautiful beachfront get away just minutes from Tulum and the Mayan Ruins. An easy flight to Cancun and a little over an hour drive brings you to the peaceful sound of the ocean waves, warm breezes and the comfort of a 5 star resort but MUCH better! Casa Dena has everything you need from a beautiful pool, roof top lounging for midnight star gazing to home cooked meals by Armando and Daisy. Try their enchaladas. We loved arriving late at night and having homemade guacamole and salsa ready for our enjoyment. What a treat! Morning walks on the beach to the cafes down the way will start your relaxing day off with friendly service and faces. Or just lounge in the hammocks while having your morning coffee. There is so much to do in the area and Steve and Dena are so knowledable and helpful in getting you to the great spots. You can fish, snorkle, kayak, body surf or seek out all the great restaurants and bars on the beaches nearby. We recommend your next Mexican vacation be to Casa Dena! It will definitely be a trip of a lifetime! Thank you sweet Dena and gracious host Steve for opening your home for all of us to enjoy and thank you for all you did to help make our daughter's wedding day special and so memorable. We will always remember this trip and your generousity! I can't wait to return! Scott and Sherri, Ashley and Travis, Kyle and Martha, Grandma Lila and Rexanne!!!

We just spent a four day weekend at Casa Dena for my 40th with three other couples and it was a perfect getaway. We loved the house and the quiet and peaceful location. It was wonderful to be spoiled by Armando and Daisy who made us breakfast every morning. You felt welcome from the start with a warm greeting of margaritas, beer, chips and guacamole. This was refreshing after traveling all morning. My husband I really enjoyed our couples massage on the beach. We took advantage of the snorkeling nearby. The house is perfect for four couples, but also has a lot of great common areas to get together when you want to sit, drink, talk and watch the waves. Steve, the owner was wonderful about providing information about the area and answering all my questions, which really helped us maximize our time on our vacation. I can't say enough wonderful things about the house, staff and owners. We will definitely be back.

At first we noticed how beautiful Casa Dena was, then how livable it was, we loved it more each day. Kudos to the dreamers and the architect who made great use of space and light. We loved the house, especially the hammocks and the terrace. Our favorite excursions were to Xel-ha and the beach in Tulum. We loved the pizza at Blue Sky, the lunch and dinner at Casa Cenote, and the dinner and live music at Zamas on Tulum beach. Daisy and Armando were wonderful! Thank you!

We have historically stayed in Soliman Bay and enjoyed it so much, it took some convincing to get our group to consider a new place. They all fell in love with the photos on the web site, and agreed to try Tankah Bay. Upon our arrival, everyone immediately fell in love with the place and over the week, we grew to like it more. We had six adults, and there was plenty of space to hide and take a nap or read. The layout was designed to accommodate room for a larger group so everyone could be together, but also thought through to offer several choices to escape. The sound of the waves and the breeze were a refreshing change from Soliman Bay. Daisy and Armando took great care of us. Take advantage of their cooking...while most in our group like to prepare meals, it was a treat to get some authentic food and a relaxing night off. Would definitely go back to Casa Dena next time we vacation in Mexico.

The house was absolutely gorgeous! Armando and Daisy were fantastic, the guacamole was awesome! We are dog people and loved having Sasha around. :) 7 of us (3 couples + one) stayed in the house and there was plenty of room. We didn't even use the A/C while we were there - the ocean breezes were beautiful. Highly recommend a massage on the beach under the palapa! The kitchen was well equipped -- we were a group of cooks and had everything we needed. The beach was a pleasure to lay on every day! Good thing we had aqua socks, the water was gorgeous but had coral that you wouldn't want to walk on bare feet. Thank you so much for a wonderful week!!! x o x o

We go to the Mayan Riviera each year and have become a little bored with the "resort" experience. This year we changed it up and decided to rent a villa. Without knowing the owners or if the pictures were real we took a chance and rented Casa Dena. First off dealing with Steve, Dena, Joshua and Stephanie was awesome and they were extremely profissional-we are in Canada and they are in the States. Any questions were answered promptly by email and they are also a great source of information on the area and attractions. Now for the Villa - well if you are reading this you have seen the pictures. The Villa will not disappoint. We had an amazing experience and the photos do not lie. Casa Dena is spacious and beautiful!!! The Caretakers, Daisy and Armando work tirelessly to keep the house clean and maintained. When we looked at renting Casa Dena we were concerned that having the caretakers living on the property and coming and going from the house would be intrusive. They are incredibly quiet and efficient. They make your breakfast for the time that you set. They serve breakfast and depart to have their own breakfast and return 1/2 hour later to clean the dishes. Daisy cleans the house and then they are gone. Usually they come in after you leave or about 11:00ish. It is awesome having them there!! There were many times that we would end up staying in Tulum or Playa and get back late. They had kindly turned on the outside lights for our return. Makes finding keys in the dark a great thing. Make sure you go to the Blue Sky Restaurant - they are extremely knowledgeable about the local area and shared a fun Cuban Resaurant with us _ Le Zebra. We will definitely be back!!!! Sheer Paradise. So thanks again Steve, Dena, Joshua and Stephanie for allowing us to stay!!! I took over 650 photos and video. It was truly an amazing experience and the fun things we found and enjoyed made this trip the most memorable!!! Joanne [Derek, Larry & Eileen]

There are many times that we would end up staying in Tulum or Playa and get back late. They had kindly turned on the outside lights for our return. Makes finding keys in the dark a great thing. Make sure you go to the Blue Sky Restaurant - they are extremely knowledgeable about the local area and shared a fun Cuban Restaurant with us - Le Zebra. We will definitly be back!!!

We had the absolute pleasure of spending a magnficent week at Casa Dena near Talum, Mexico. Casa Dena is a perfect blend of luxurious, beautifully appointed accomodations with total privacy on a secluded stretch of the Yucatan. The property is spacious and maintained to perfection, daily by the caretakers, Daisy and Armando. The setting is ideal for stargazing on the rooftop lounge, enjoying meals prepared by the caretakers with delicious local fare on the patio overlooking the beach to lounging in the pool for refreshment. We loved every aspect of this beautiful property. We ran on the beach from the house and strolled to the unique local restaurants with amazing grilled seafood along the shore. We highly recommend a seaside massage under the palapas rooftop provided by the Mayan masseuse. This vacation was ideal, we were provided guidance for exploring the area rich with locals and great restaurants. We enjoyed Salsa dancing in Akumal and pizza in the tiny, charming town of Chemuyil. We visited the cenotes for snorkeling and zip line tour through the caves. The vacation was a "10" and we highly recommend families and /or friends to enjoy Casa Dena for their next Mexico getaway!!.

Many memories to remind us of our stay at Casa Dena. We hope to return again some day with our children and let them experience Mexico in a rural beach front/jungle setting with all the attractions and villages nearby that are off the beaten path. Very convenient location and easy to get to from the airport. We had a spectacular time at the casa. Amazing place to retreat to!

Our stay at Casa Dena was incredible!! The views and constant sound of the ocean are breathtaking! The property is so clean and beautiful. It had everything we hoped for. Traveling with a group of people, my husband and I were able to be close to the group but also able to get away and spend time alone. With so much room to sneak away on the roof top, the hammocks, patio, pool or walk along the beach. The pool was so refreshing and the constant sound of the ocean was relaxing. We really enjoyed the rooftop in the evenings. We were very impressed with the hired staff and how friendly and efficient they were. We are used to staying at resorts but this was truly a new and enjoyable experience. We loved the privacy and peace and quiet of being in beach house. It was truly luxurious. We enjoyed massages in the Palapa, out near the ocean, what a great experience! We visited many great places and my favorite was Le Zebra in Tulum. We look forward to visiting Casa Dena again and highly recommend it to our family & friends.

Our stay at Casa Dena was fantastic. The house is very modern, comfortable and has incredible views. Armando and Daisy keep the grounds and house in great shape and order. They can prepare traditional meals with advance notice, which are just the right touch for a Mayan experience. The location is perfect between Tulum and Alkmar. Tulum has the most amazing beaches, white sand and turquoise waters. Casa Dena is on the ocean with beautiful views and is very peaceful and quite. We had a wonderful stay and plan to return as soon as possible.

Casa Dena exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival we were met by Armondo and Daisy, the house staff, what wonderful people they are. They kept the home and grounds tidy and offered outstanding traditional meals. The house and grounds are beautiful and well planned. We had 4 couples, all of whom had their privacy and still enjoyed each others company. Each bedroom has its own bath and wonderful views and breezes from the ocean! This remote breath taking setting is the best place in the world to enjoy a vacation. We loved cooling off in the pool, napping in the hamocks under the palapa, the friendly locals, and the surrounding area restaurants and attractions. A massage on the beach is a must! We are definitely planning on returning and will highly recommend Casa Dena to our friends.

My husband and I stayed here for 10 days and we loved it.Beautiful house and breathtaking views are just the beginning of what the place has to offer! Their staff takes care of everything; making your stay a total pleasure! We will go back and we will recommend this place to all of our friends. It is also the perfect location to explore all of what the area has to offer; while still keeping that more private location.
