La Joliere – a house for all seasons
Newly-renovated and privately situated in its own 2 ½ acres
Near Gathemo, 6 miles from Vire set in the glorious rolling hills of Basse Normandy
4 bedrooms, sleeps 2 - 9 people + cot
Solar heated pool in summer, crackling log fire in winter
Chris & I, when looking for a holiday home, in lower Normandy came upon La Joliere ‘the pretty place’ an area set high in the rolling hills, on a scenic route, where the air is clean and fresh. We immediately fell in love with the 360 degree views over the glorious surrounding countryside and the large, old stone farmhouse that enjoys sole residency in this magical spot. With a wood close by that is ribboned by little streams, it is a haven for wildlife and several unusual species of birds. If you mention La Joliere to the locals they will respond ‘Ah, La Joliere, tranquille!’ And tranquil it is with your nearest neighbours 1/2 kilometre away. However, 2 miles in either direction will bring you to 2 well-appointed villages and a recommended restaurant. We are just 6 miles to the bustling town of Vire with its wealth of restaurants, cinema, theatre, railway station (direct line to Paris) large market and numerous shops.
La Joliere has been restored and renovated to the highest standard with your (and our) enjoyment in mind. We have tried to put into it all the ingredients that we ourselves would hope to find on holiday. There are many houses for rent in Normandy but we have aimed to provide that little bit extra to make your stay special and I think that the comments from our visitors book will bear testament that we appear to have succeeded (please click on the entry to our own web site at the foot of the page for a sample).
La Joliere is available all year round as each season offers different enjoyments, festivals and fetes. We have a solar heated swimming pool for the summer and crackling log fires to be enjoyed in the winter.

This year (2010) was our third visit to La Joliere; our second visit with our 6 year old daughter. La Joliere is a beautiful, well equipped house - everything you could need is provided. The house is tastefully and elegantly furnished, the bedrooms and beds comfortable. Best night's sleep you could have as it's so quiet at night. The kitchen is great and we had some lovely meals round the kitchen table, and also outside by the BBQ. We took the opportunity to BBQ whenever we could, especially the merguez and steak haches! We were very lucky in July 2010 as we had heatwave weather and were able to use the pool at least once most days, sometimes 2 or 3 times, and eat outside every day. On prior visits, we have had wet weather but La Joliere is equipped with satellite tv, a dvd player and an excellent games room so there was always plenty to do, for us and for our daughter. The pool is fantastic when the weather is good, safe for children, and we also enjoyed several games of petanque on the special ‘pitch’. The views and surrounding scenery is wonderful and we had some lovely evening walks from the house, especially the one through the woods and over the stream, using the stepping stones to cross. If you want to, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area – Vire’s market on a Friday was really good and it is an interesting town to wander around. On earlier trips we ventured further afield to Granville, Deauville and Trouville. In July we walked around Lac Dathee which was very picturesque but really hot! There are some good watersports at Lac Dathee. But what we really enjoyed this year was relaxing at La Joliere and soaking up the fantastic weather, making daily trips to the boulangerie in St Germain de Tallevande where the lady owner is really friendly and our daughter could try out her French, having a leisurely lunch and a swim and then time for dinner! A really wonderful house with helpful but relaxed owners. Thank you Moira and Chris. We have already booked for summer 2011!

We were a party of 6 (3 couples) and our stay at La Joliere was a most satisfying experience. The house was immaculately kept and the grounds a delight to stroll about. We enjoyed cooking our evening meals in the wonderful French kitchen which was well-provided for. The farmhouse was even better than the photos provided and the Normandy countryside lived up to all expectations. We highly recommend this property and thank our gracious hosts for the invaluable information and help.

This charming farmhouse on lovely grounds is very comfortable and well equipped. It is even better than advertised. Comfortable beds and plenty of room. We enjoyed preparing meals in the family size kitchen and dining area. The outdoor grill and covered area with large table was the scene of many an afternoon wine and cheese get-together, discussing the days events and watching the sunset. The pool is an added plus - large, clean and well maintained. The farmhouse is well located for numerous sightseeing day-trips. The quiet and idyllic location is still close enough to towns with shops, restaurants and wonderful markets. Very hospitable and helpful hosts. Thank you Moira and Chris. We loved our stay!
Owner response:Thank you Ron and Janie, thanks also for inviting us to one of your cheese and wine soirees during the month that you stayed at La Joliere we very much enjoyed it! Hoping to welcome you back sometime. Best regards, Moira & Chris.
