My husband and I grew up on the Oregon Coast and developed strong ties to small communities and the Pacific Ocean. During college we spent our summers working on San Juan Island and soon realized this was a place of unique beauty that kept calling us back every year. Fortunately our lively-hoods took us in the direction of the arts, nature & wildlife, a perfect combination that allowed us to make this special island our home.

We recently spent a week in mid-September with our son, daughter-in-law and their 3 year old and couldn't have imagined a nicer place to be for a lazy vacation. The private vacation home is situated with water views on three sides with a very sizable yard for playing games with our grandson or just watching the ever-present deer. The home has a open layout that was great for those cooking and those just keeping the cooks company, but quite quiet for late sleepers. The owners have thought of just everything that visitors might need from a closet full of board games to a rice steamer (read over what is listed in the vacation home...all is really there). And the owners greeted us just after arrival with fresh coffee beans and fruit. We spent lots of time on the deck that has lounging furniture, table and chairs and a gas grill. This rental is in Roche Harbor which has good dining and some shopping, but only 15 minutes from Friday Harbor where the ferry lands. We were able to kayak easily from Roche Harbor and saw many seals in the fairly calm waters. Although the island isn't too hilly for biking, the roads are narrow. It's better to take the ferry with bikes to Orcas Island for a day of cycling. But, there are more things to do on San Juan Island than you can pack in in one week anyway. We enjoyed the Alpaca Farm and watching the Orca Whales off Lime Kiln Park.

We had a wonderful week and when the time came, none of us were ready to go home! Aside from being beautifully appointed, the house is comfortable and well equipped. We had everything we needed – the games were especially enjoyed by my boys. They set up the badminton on the lawn area and played all week. We absolutely loved the setting – beautiful, private and quiet, perfect for a relaxing vacation and loved the proximity to Roche Harbor.
