Location: Point Reyes Station, San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA (One Hour from San Francisco and the Wine Country)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 6)
The Mesa Refuge sits on the edge of the mesa bordering Tomales Bay and has far reaching views of the estuary and the surrounding hills. The bay in front of the Mesa Refuge is a vibrant, constantly changing wetlands. Herons, egrets, hawks and many different kinds of wild fowl can be seen and heard from the decks and gardens around the house.
The house was built by the abstract expressionist painter Sam Francis. He spent the summers here with his family and entourage, painting and visiting the nearby Point Reyes National Seashore. Sam Francis died in 94 and the house is now run as an artists' retreat. It is offered to writers who want a quiet and inspiring place to work, think and dream.
The Mesa Refuge is light, colorful, spacious, and full of interesting architectural details. There are original artworks, antique rugs and vintage furniture throughout the house which add to its charm.
The Mesa Refuge has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and sleeps 6 adults. The master bedroom is in a tower and has a queen bed and en-suite bathroom. The view of the bay from the balcony off the tower bedroom is spectacular. The other 2 bedrooms are on the ground floor. One has a queen bed and one has a double bed. Both have private decks overlooking the garden.
The living room has an intricate wooden cathedral ceiling, an extensive library along one wall, comfortable chairs and sofas and a wood burning stove. There is a large, modern kitchen and dining area. This opens onto a rose covered deck with views of the garden and bay.
The house is surrounded by beautiful, mature gardens which include an apple orchard, rose garden, wood burning brick oven and a sauna. Half way down the mesa edge is a viewing deck over the wetlands for observing the birds or setting up an easel or camera. Two writers' cabins are hidden in the garden for people who want to write or dream. There is also a tennis court that we share with a few neighbors.
The village of Point Reyes Station with its cafes, bookstores and restaurants is a ten minute walk. The Point Reyes National Seashore and the safe sandy beaches of Tomales Bay are 15 minutes away. The wine country is an hour's drive.
