This magical retreat in a wooded setting has picturesque old world charm reminiscent of an Italian Alpine cottage.

Red Gate Cottage, situated on a knoll in Beaverdam Valley, is a vintage log cabin faced with stone. Semiskilled craftsmen working over decades, using stone and antique brick, produced an effect that makes the cottage resemble an ancient stone house in the Alps. The original log walls inside have been restored and preserved.

The luxury renovation by the Architect/Owner features high pine-faced cathedral ceilings throughout. The river stone fireplace is a focal point where people enjoy gathering to watch movies and cable HDTV or to just soak up the relaxing atmosphere. It's a great venue for romantic couples, friends and family groups to celebrate holidays and special occasions.

A hot tub on the stone patio, cradled by massive rock walls, rests under a vine-draped pergola. Beyond, a sunken garden has blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and fresh herbs to use in the gourmet kitchen, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

From the deck, you can enjoy close mountain views as you dine or sit around a blazing fire in the chiminea. Relax in the hammock, and listen to the sounds of the abundant wild life mingling with those of barnyard animals from nearby farms. Flocks of wild turkeys wander by. Guests recently saw a total of eight black bears (including 4 cubs) during their 10-day stay.

Peaceful and quiet, the cottage is within 10 minutes of the center of Asheville with its many world class restaurants, year-round live entertainment, museums, art galleries, theaters, concert halls, and large exhibitions at the Civic Center. Golfing, rafting, fly fishing and horseback riding are among the local attractions, as well as the Grove Park Inn and the famed Biltmore Estate.

Other nearby activities include spas, YMCA, dancing, yoga, live music, great shops, coffee houses, farmers markets, NC University activities, and the Nature Center. Asheville is an antique hunter’s paradise, and the River Arts District (more than 80 artists’ studios) produces some of the best art in America. Shoppers will love the boutiques and specialty shops. A 24-hour grocery store is 5 minutes away, and there are many gourmet shops – the Greenlife Market is not to be missed!

The NC University (UNCA) campus is just minutes away. Black Mountain is within 30 minutes, and Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Park and Wolf Laurel Ski Resort are all within 45 minutes. Mt. Mitchell, highest mountain in the Eastern U.S., is an hour’s drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The scenic Beaverdam Valley meanders past the country club golf course en route to the spectacular high mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway – where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and scenic drives. Yet the fantastic restaurants and night life of Asheville are only a few minutes away.

At Red Gate Cottage, you can enjoy both town and country, truly the best of both worlds. So bring the children, bring the dog. Here, you can get away from it all but still stay in touch by telephone (free long distance) and high speed wireless internet.

The Cottage was everything we could have wanted. I think you have a mini Grove Park Inn! We really enjoyed sitting on the deck with the fire going. Your little cottage made a tough weekend much easier. It was wonderful to come back to its peace after scattering my Mom's ashes. Thank you so much! - Faith & Dave P., family of 7, Brandon, Florida

First of all, Georgia is my Mom's name, so I automatically love you!! We had five people stay (2 couples and one more). We arrived and felt at home right away. Your oatmeal cookies were delicious! Also, thank you for the wine and chocolates. You have great attention to detail. I don't think there was anything we needed that you didn't have. We came here to run a half marathon and enjoy Asheville. Our marathon was a success!! We survived the hills! EEeek. This was the perfect place to stay to put us at ease and get us in running mode. We enjoyed the fireplace and hot tub, especially after the run. We cooked a great dinner here also. I can't say enough. We will most definitely stay here again. Okay. I'm wrapping this up..... We love you and your cottage! Lyndsay, Meredith, Mary, and hubbies.

Thank you so very much for a fantastic stay at this delightful cottage. We can't imagine a better spot to vacation with 4 adults, 1 one-year-old, and a rambunctious dog. The fenced yard worked out so well! Having the gated deck was great too. We had planned lots of adventures in Asheville, but we scaled back so we could spend more time relaxing at Red Gate Cottage! We will most certainly be back! - Michelle & John (Charlottesville, VA); Dave, Mary & Helen (Atlanta, GA); and Hannah (woof, woof) P.S. we heard coyotes on our first night here! Neat!

We can't say enough! Everything was absolutely perfect and your "hosting" and attention to the little details is so very, very gracious. Every day we were torn between staying in and enjoying what the cottage had to offer and going out to enjoy all that WNC has to offer. WNC typically won out but it was always nice to come home. We LOVED the labyrinth and walked it regularly. The kids loved the playset - what a nice surprise - and of course the hot tub! Thanks for opening your place to us - it has made our stay absolutely fabulous. There is no doubt - we will be back!

Thanks, Georgia, for your welcoming touches. We enjoyed the cookies and the wine. Abby and Zoey loved the yard. It was a great welcoming surprise to find out that it was pretty much fenced in. You've done a great job with this little place - so cozy, inviting, comfortable, clean and furnished with care and style. The yard & deck were delightful to hang out in as well. We'll recommend your place to friends who visit and come back again some time. The drumming in Asheville tonight was absolutely thrilling - a true connection of all souls regardless of age, class or race. Greg and I loved that experience! And Tupelo Honey was also much to our liking. This was our first trip to this area and we really enjoyed it. Know that your cabin and your thoughtful hospitality had a lot to do with that. Faith & Greg, and - Abby (woof woof) & Zoey (woof woof).

Thank you so much for a wonderful 3 days. We enjoyed the cottage so much! It reminded us of the stone cottage we stayed in Saignon, France in the Luberon Region. I was able to paint every day, Johnny picked away at the piano, and the dogs loved the large deck. Jodie & Johnny -and- Theo (woof) Teddy (woof) & Grace (woof woof)
