Asheville cottage description
This magical retreat in a wooded setting has picturesque old world charm reminiscent of an Italian Alpine cottage.
Red Gate Cottage, situated on a knoll in Beaverdam Valley, is a vintage log cabin faced with stone. Semiskilled craftsmen working over decades, using stone and antique brick, produced an effect that makes the cottage resemble an ancient stone house in the Alps. The original log walls inside have been restored and preserved.
The luxury renovation by the Architect/Owner features high pine-faced cathedral ceilings throughout. The river stone fireplace is a focal point where people enjoy gathering to watch movies and cable HDTV or to just soak up the relaxing atmosphere. It's a great venue for romantic couples, friends and family groups to celebrate holidays and special occasions.
A hot tub on the stone patio, cradled by massive rock walls, rests under a vine-draped pergola. Beyond, a sunken garden has blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and fresh herbs to use in the gourmet kitchen, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.
From the deck, you can enjoy close mountain views as you dine or sit around a blazing fire in the chiminea. Relax in the hammock, and listen to the sounds of the abundant wild life mingling with those of barnyard animals from nearby farms. Flocks of wild turkeys wander by. Guests recently saw a total of eight black bears (including 4 cubs) during their 10-day stay.
Peaceful and quiet, the cottage is within 10 minutes of the center of Asheville with its many world class restaurants, year-round live entertainment, museums, art galleries, theaters, concert halls, and large exhibitions at the Civic Center. Golfing, rafting, fly fishing and horseback riding are among the local attractions, as well as the Grove Park Inn and the famed Biltmore Estate.
Other nearby activities include spas, YMCA, dancing, yoga, live music, great shops, coffee houses, farmers markets, NC University activities, and the Nature Center. Asheville is an antique hunter’s paradise, and the River Arts District (more than 80 artists’ studios) produces some of the best art in America. Shoppers will love the boutiques and specialty shops. A 24-hour grocery store is 5 minutes away, and there are many gourmet shops – the Greenlife Market is not to be missed!
The NC University (UNCA) campus is just minutes away. Black Mountain is within 30 minutes, and Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Park and Wolf Laurel Ski Resort are all within 45 minutes. Mt. Mitchell, highest mountain in the Eastern U.S., is an hour’s drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The scenic Beaverdam Valley meanders past the country club golf course en route to the spectacular high mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway – where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and scenic drives. Yet the fantastic restaurants and night life of Asheville are only a few minutes away.
At Red Gate Cottage, you can enjoy both town and country, truly the best of both worlds. So bring the children, bring the dog. Here, you can get away from it all but still stay in touch by telephone (free long distance) and high speed wireless internet.

Lovely mountain retreat in the heart of Asheville
Lovely mountain retreat in the heart of Asheville
Our group arrived later in the evening and we were pleased that Georgia had thoughtfully left the cottage well-lit and cozy for us upon our arrival, with delicious cookies and a bottle of wine waiting for us by the fireplace! Her attention to detail and utmost concern for our comfort was apparent from the very start. Any time we found ourselves in need of any extras that one may forget to pack on a trip, the items were often right there in front of our eyes, waiting for us to use them! The kitchen is well-stocked with amenities and we were able to entertain guests & prepare dinner & breakfasts together with ease. There are two fire pits that we very much took advantage of (with plenty of firewood), the yard & porch areas were impeccably landscaped and the hot tub was enjoyed every night of our stay! One of the best parts of our trip was soaking in the tub after a long day of exploring under the star filled sky, we even saw a few shooting stars! It really is a cottage straight out of a fairy tale. The location was ideal for our trip, far enough away to feel secluded and in touch with nature but close enough to make a quick trip to the grocery store or grab a bite downtown. The book of information about the area was very helpful and Georgia went above and beyond to provide ample recommendations on parking, restaurants and other activities in the area that ended up coming in very handy during our trip. We ended up doing several hikes during our stay, eating at many of the restaurants in the book that Georgia provides and going to the NC Arboretum. I can't wait to plan another trip to Asheville, I definitely would stay at the Red Gate Cottage every time I visit and hope to share this gem of a place with other loved ones in years to come! Thanks so much for making our visit a pleasant and relaxing one Georgia, I am happy to recommend Red Gate Cottage to anyone thinking about booking!

We spent a wonderful week at Red Gate Cottage. The location is perfect - quiet and private, yet very easy access to Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Biltmore Estate and all the area has to offer. The cottage is charming and cozy. We really enjoyed sitting on the large deck for morning coffee and in the evening after our day's adventures. Asheville is a very interesting little city with fantastic restaurants, unique shops and fabulous architecture. One of the closest restaurants to the Cottage is Avenue M and the food and service were great. Also we highly recommende the Lobster Trap and Mellow Mushroom Pizza downtown. Georgia a gracious hostess and the cookies, wine and beautiful dog treats were a lovely welcoming surprise. The only negative surprise was the lack of cell phone service at the cottage. Thanks for offering this beautiful little house on VRBO.

Owner response: Thank you for the nice things you said about Red Gate Cottage! I'm sorry your cell phone did not work there. There is excellent cell phone reception if you have Verizon. The mountains block reception for most other cell phones. Because of this, I provide unlimited free long-distance dial-out / dial-in land-line telephone service. In addition, there is super-fast high-speed wireless cable internet service that works perfectly in all weather conditions. Guests are never out of touch with the outside world, even though the property feels secluded and "away from it all." I live in Asheville and am just a phone call away if you need anything.
We had a relaxing stay at Red Gate Cottage. All of the descriptions of the property were accurate with a great location and a quiet setting. My children loved the cozy backyard and playset. The adults in our group loved the clean and unique cottage interior. The hot tub was also a frequent spot to unwind for everyone. I highly recommend a stay at the Red Gate Cottage!

Our family had a fabulous long weekend stay at the Red Gate Cottage. We sat on the portico for coffee, patio for wine and ate dinner on the deck in front of the chiminea. The hot tub was very cozy, tucked away in a secluded corner with hanging vines and rock walls to make us feel like we were in Italy or France. The cabin is only a 7 minute drive to downtown Asheville. Great house!!

We just spent a long weekend at The Red Gate Cottage with some friends and our two dogs. The cottage is very charming and the grounds are lovely. We would love to come back when the weather is warmer so that we could enjoy the outdoor space. The location is great! Just a short drive from downtown, and several shops are close by to pick groceries, etc. The property is completely fenced and we were able to let the dogs explore on their own. However, there was enough space to accommodate a game of fetch. The perfect vacation for dogs and their owners! The cottage is stocked with anything you could possibly need. Extra towels and sandals are available for hot tub use. The gas fireplace made the cottage very cozy on those cold nights! Thanks, Georgia!

Honeymooners in the mountains!
Honeymooners in the mountains!
We selected Asheville because it was halfway home from Florida where we had our wedding ceremony on 12/27/12, also because we had heard so many good things about Asheville. Since we were traveling with dogs, a fence is a must as they enjoy running around and taking in the smells untethered! Red Gate Cottage was so VERY much more than a fenced-in cabin in the woods. It is hard to describe all the personal touches that Georgia has put into the cottage to make it so magical. In fact, we probably missed some awesome Asheville sightseeing because the cottage would not allow us to leave! We enjoyed the limitless options of vegetarian/vegan fare the city had to offer and are already looking forward to future visits.

It was a pleasure dealing with Georgia, she handled all of the arrangements with great attention to detail. The cottage was darling, all of our needs and expectations were met and surpassed. The gated yard was wonderful for exercising our 2 year old golden retriever with no fear of traffic. It is in a great location, close to the Grove Park Inn and Asheville. There are cute outdoor spaces, some of which we never found time to enjoy, altho hours were spent talking, drinking and snacking on the deck. The washer and dryer were handy as we were heading to the beach after our 3 night stay. The gas fireplace took the chill off of a cool fall evening. We loved exploring how the cottage has evolved over time, altho we never did find the secret storage place in the master bath cabinet. Thanks, Georgia, we had a good time and would recommend it highly...

Charming Asheville Getaway
Charming Asheville Getaway
My husband and I and our 1 year old Labrador, just returned from another delightful stay at Red Gate Cottage. This was our second trip there, having spent a week earlier in the summer. Red Gate Cottage is cozy, charming, and very conveniently located. The owner has thought of all the details to make your stay comfortable. We loved relaxing on the deck by the chiminea in the evening and on our last trip, we enjoyed using the beautiful stone fireplace inside. The cottage is just a short drive from both downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway so you can enjoy the best of both worlds, that is, if you do decide to leave. Our dog loved romping around the large, lush yard as well. We can't wait to stay there again!

My husband and I stayed at the Red Gate Cottage for a week with our son, daughter-in-law and three grandsons ages 4,7 and 9. Georgia was the perfect host. She has thought of everything to make the cottage comfortable. It was clean and well equipped. There was a ton of information about restaurants, golf, rafting, the Biltmore, hiking , etc right there in the cottage and we took advantage of it all. Best of all was the information on the history of the cottage and the wonderful labyrinth that our grandsons were completely fascinated with. A great location, private yet close to everything. We all loved it!

Several friends and I have just returned from a wonderful stay at Red Gate Cottage. I loved the porches and stayed on them as much as possible. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. Everything we needed was right at our finger tips. We are already trying to find a time to return to the delightful Red Gate Cottage.
