Come enjoy New Orleans like a local in MidCity, a favorite NOLA neighborhood located in what was known in the 19th century as the “back of town.” Two blocks from the streetcars on Canal Street and Carrollton, this home is just ten minutes from the French Quarter, the Fairgrounds, Bayou St. John, City Park, the famous cemeteries of New Orleans, and more.

This beautiful house was flooded during Katrina, but has been lovingly restored by its owners, who wanted to help make New Orleans whole again after the devastation of the storm. Outfitted for comfort and serenity, it is a welcome respite after wild abandon at Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest, French Quarter Festival, the VooDoo Experience or Essence Festival, and just exploring all the magical wonders this unique city has to offer.

PRIVATE HOT TUB! Clothing is optional as you enjoy the cozy round hot tub in our totally private courtyard. Whip up a delicious cocktail and have a bubbly soak, surrounded by lush tropical greenery gracing our new large deck in the back yard. You can go from watching the "river of life" flow by from the front porch that overlooks the lively streets of New Orleans, to enjoying complete outdoor privacy in our tropical paradise in the back yard. And as you move from the front porch to the back yard you'll walk through the graceful rooms of this lovely 100-year-old house decorated in a colorful, eclectic style that lets you know you are in the fabulous and funky city of New Orleans. Nothing generic, suburban, or run-of-the-mill in this house, that's for sure!

When you're ready for some socializin', step around the corner to Finn McCool’s and have a beer, talk to the locals, meet some new people ... New Orleans folks are friendly! In the cool of the evening stroll over to Angelo Brocato’s on Carrollton Ave and delight in their wondrous pastries and Italian ice or gelato. Host a Sugar Bowl party in front of our 52" large flat screen home theater, then dance the night away to the Zydeco music at the Rock-N-Bowl, truly a NOLA experience. Or catch the streetcar on Canal and step right out onto Bourbon, Decatur or Frenchman Street for a night of festivities. For those in the know, Frenchman Street (in the Marigny) is the place to be for great live music. But MidCity has its share of live music going on every weekend too ... Banks St Bar & Grill, Chickie Wah Wah's (on Canal), and others.

Restaurants abound in MidCity and many are within an easy walk of three or four blocks. The Ruby Slipper (delicious breakfast and lunch), Mandina's (time-honored NOLA tradition), Mona's (Mediterranan fare and fabulous homemade pita bread), Juan's Flying Burrito (mmmm-mmmmm), Venezia (rumored to have been a Mafia hangout long ago), Wit's End (said to have hosted Brangelina once), Dosan's Noodle House, Five Happiness, and more. Rouse's grocery store is close by on Carrollton, and it is a New Orleans institution (great fried chicken, homemade Cajun sausage and boiled crawfish). So even if you're sans automobile, you'll be well-fed!

This house has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 14’ ceilings, original heart pine floors, a 6’ long claw foot bathtub in the master bath, new kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, king-size four-poster bed, two queen beds, and a double sleeper sofa. It also features a large private deck/courtyard with a five-person hot tub. It’s perfect for a family getaway, a romantic honeymoon, a bachelor party, a reunion of old friends, a Festival experience … somehow magic happens in New Orleans and you will make memories to last a lifetime.

So come on down and experience The City That Care Forgot!

Owner's Map of Mid-City

My husband and I purchased The House of Mirth in 2006, soon after Hurricane Katrina made her terrible mark on this historic and graceful old city. As a native of the Gulf Coast with many memories of New Orleans going back to my childhood, my heart was broken when I saw the complete devastation that the entire area suffered. We lived in Atlanta and from that far-away place I longed to help and be a part of the rebuilding of the city I love so much. When the opportunity came, we took the plunge and bought the gutted and damaged house. But her grace shone through the dulled and peeling paint, her foundation was strong, and all the beautiful cypress woodwork survived the rising waters.

It took us two solid years to bring the house to its present state, working in hot humid conditions with no electricity, no water at first, and no stores or restaurants open. It was a happy day when the Home Depot on Carrollton opened, and once the nearby grocery store got up and running, things felt a little more normal. With every trip down from Atlanta we saw New Orleans slowly come back, debris disappearing, houses being repaired, red lights working again, electricity back on.

We parked a small RV out front and that's where we stayed when we were down from Atlanta working. Many loving hands helped repair and renovate the house, including family and friends. When we got running water it was a joyous day, and when the electricity was restored, oh boy did we celebrate! That meant lights and fans and radios and electric tools to make our work a little easier.

So The House of Mirth is a labor of love and we hope you will enjoy her lovely amenities and imagine the many people who have lived within her walls over the past 100 years. I think they would approve of how she looks today and welcome visitors who come to discover the quirky, mysterious and delightful place that is New Orleans.

A Charming House And A Great Location

Guest: Salem Traveler (Massachusetts, United States)
Date of Stay: 01/20/12 Review Submitted: 01/31/12

The House of Mirth is wonderfully clean and comfortable inside with a beautiful deck area outside. There are restaurants nearby and the trolley makes this the perfect location - close enough for an easy (and affordable) ride into the French Quarter but far enough away from the crowds so that you can enjoy a quiet morning outside on the deck. The owner was great to work with, helpful and quick to respond. If you are planning a trip to New Orleans, this is a great place to call home while you are there.

Wonderful place to call "Home"

Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful place to call "home" this week. We had a blast working with Habitat for Humanity and the hot tub was great after a long day's work. Left a few little trinkets of our own :) And I think I danced myself ragged on Frenchmen St! We will be back!

30th Birthday New Orleans Adventure

This house is simply gorgeous and we had a blast. You must take a bath in the enormous claw foot bath tub and end every night with a dip in the hot tub. The renter was very accommodating and we couldn't have had a better time. You are a quick walk to the street car which takes you straight downtown in 15 minutes. If you enjoy brunch, walk just one block to the Ruby Slipper for the best shrimp and grits you will ever have. I highly recommend staying in this house.

Great family vacation home

Guest: cynthia m. (Aurora, CO)
Date of Stay: 05/27/11 Review Submitted: 06/06/11

We just returned from a 4-night stay and loved this home! It was the perfect size for an extended family group of seven - plenty of space to gather plus private areas to be alone when we needed a break from all the talking. Great beds, comfy seating, wonderful AC and ceiling fans made the warm weather bearable. Fully equipped kitchen was great although, being New Orleans, we usually ate out! Convenient on-street parking. Nice backyard was a bonus. Great communication with owner - thanks, Elizabeth. We will be back!!

Owner response:Thanks for the kind words, Tica. So pleased that you enjoyed the house and New Orleans. Hope you'll visit us again soon! Elizabeth

Great Time Had By All!

Guest: Txnrse (Texas)
Date of Stay: 01/20/11 Review Submitted: 01/30/11

We went with a group of friends and really enjoyed ourselves! The Ruby Slipper, a small cafe just a block down from the house served great breakfast! There is an Irish pub called Finn McCools literally just around the corner...you can crawl home if need be! The house is very nice! We enjoyed going to see the WWII museum...as well as eating at The Acme Oyster Bar...a DEFINITE MUST! Try the char grilled oysters! Yum! The owner, Elizabeth, was very helpful answering my many questions prior to our trip. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we all did ours! We are planning on making another trip in late July.

Cozy Value

Guest: Nicole Y. (New York City)
Date of Stay: 12/17/10 Review Submitted: 12/28/10

Our family of six had a lovely vacation here. It is located in a lower middle class neighborhood (nearby homes have boarded up windows), which was surprisingly convenient and "real". We loved the proximity to the street car and to a marvelous cafe and walked to the French Quarter every day to use up some of the delicious calories we relished consuming at all the great restaurants. The home is spacious with plenty of room for people to spread out. The owner provides great customer service.

Owner response:Thanks for the kind words, Nicole ... they are much appreciated! So glad your family enjoyed The Ruby Slipper and experienced a taste of real-life New Orleans. Just a note to explain the boarded up windows on some of the homes nearby ... throughout many neighborhoods of New Orleans remain haunting reminders of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation she wrought on that beautiful, gracious old city. Our street is no exception. But bit by bit the damaged buildings are being restored or rebuilt, although in some instances the property owners cannot or will not take action. In our case, the house next door is owned by someone who refuses to sell, tear down or repair the house. So there it sits, essentially abandoned after the storm, yet so deserving of restoration as an architectural gem waiting to be repolished. If we are able to convince the owner to sell it, we hope to buy the house and transform it much as the House of Mirth was transformed. But despite the blight, the undaunted spirit of New Orleans triumphs, shining through even the most crippled of streets or structures. It's the people, the history, the customs, the music, the food, the architecture, even the languid air and the ever-changing sky that make the city special and unique. Those boarded up windows may someday be repaired ... or not ... but don't let that stop you from experiencing the magic that is New Orleans, especially in the "faubourgs" or neighborhoods that are off the tourist grid, like MidCity. The folks who live and work in "the back o' town" are the heart and soul of New Orleans ... they go to work and school, plant their gardens, visit with their neighbors, take care of their frail and elderly, parade with Endymion at Mardi Gras, eat crawfish at Jazz Fest time, and generally live their lives in the laid back New Orleans way. If their houses are not perfect or their streets are still pot-holed, that's okay ... it's a work in progress!

positive vibes in this beautiful home

Guest: Dan (LA)
Date of Stay: 11/04/10 Review Submitted: 11/09/10

This is an impossibly charming, surprisingly large home in a safe, conveniently located area of New Orleans. Amenities abound, and the owner is helpful and quick to respond to any inquiries. The Mid-City locale is perfect for those who want to experience the Crescent City from a reasonable distance. A trolly nearby creates easy access for trips to Downtown and the Bourbon scene, but some local eateries and bars are worth checking out. Overall this is a great set-up.

The House of Mirth was a great experience! We've been to NOLA many times but it was wonderful to stay in Midcity and experience the life, restaurants, and culture of this unique area. We loved the house with its original doors and fireplace mantels..so beautiful! I think it's great that you've shared your home with others. The only thing that would have made our trip better would have been cool weather. We were there the first of August during the heat wave!
