A sunny 4 Bedroom stone house with a direct view of the town church, (spectacular at night). In back is a small private courtyard.
The town is mostly medieval and quite picturesque. The people there are welcoming, especially our immediate neighbours who also speak English.
Surrounding the town are rolling hills, farms, lakes, and old woods. There are many beautiful walks one can take directly from the town. Within a short drive one can see many absolutely gorgeous landscapes with mills, rivers, canals, bike paths... It's a half hour drive to beaches and, inland, to horseback riding. In nearby Questembert there is a covered market on Mondays offering organic vegetables, artisan cheeses, and fresh fish and oysters among other things.
The Morbihan is a gentle, elegant part of Brittany. It is not as wild as the points farther west but not as touristy as Mont Saint Michel or Dinan to the north. The climate is usually temperate, although it often goes from being gray to full sun several times in the course of a day. The gray days are as beautiful as the sunny ones; the greens and other colours become more vivid. The nearby beaches are nice and varied. The inland landscape is especially beautiful, largely untouched, and offering so many different textures, even within a five minute drive.
While this town is in a rural setting, one can easily visit several sophisticated, elegant cities within an hour or so, such as Rennes, Quimper, Nantes or Vannes.
Not exactly separatist, the Bretons have a long history of keeping out invaders from several quarters and often see themselves as Celtics more than French. The locals take great pride in the close by town of Questembert where the Bretons stopped the invasion of the "Vikings", by which they might mean Normands? Many of its current visitors are from the U.K. and feel quite welcome.
Rochefort en Terre is a picturesque small town, (400 inhabitants), with an active life of its own. There are several restaurants and cafes, antique stores, and a restored chateau at the top of the village. On occasion there are concerts in the church across the street, some of them surprisingly good for such a location! There is a great variety of walks one can take directly from the house, past fields, through woods, and up on small mountains. There is a manmade lake nearby.
