Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1935
Long Pond has been the summer focus of four generations of the Conant family. Gerda Conant, our mom, leads on our crew of her children; Donald, David,Susan, Peggy and Ellen and her six grandchildren. We all pitch in to maintain the rustic charm and natural setting of Apley House and our other cottages on Long Pond. To insure that development would never encroach on this special place, our family donated 40 acres of the adjacent land to the Wildlands Trust of Southeastern Massachusetts.
Why the Owner Chose Plymouth
Way back when Apley House was built in the early 1900's, city folk built summer homes in the Long Pond area to get away from the heat. They would come by train and carriage from Boston and New York and stay all summer (we still maintain a carriage garage on a nearby property). Since the area sits between Buzzards Bay and Massachusetts Bay, the ocean breezes modify the climate providing natural cooling. Before air conditioning that was pretty important to summer folks. In modern times, it only takes an hour to get here, so no need to stay all summer. But the climate is still great. With midsummer temperatures consistently about 10 degrees less than Boston, you can comfortably enjoy the outdoors.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
Our cottages on Long Pond have been the geographic center of our family -- the place where we go to reaffirm our family roots. It is a fantastic place for kids in the summer. They can have lots of independence, exploring the natural environment every day. The swimming and boating on Long Pond are so perfect that we find it hard to leave. But we do like to visit the area ocean beaches in the Plymouth area and we love purchasing lobster and other fresh seafood from the local fish markets.

What a wonderful time (we) had at Long Pond. We visited historical sites, went to the ocean beaches, got lost in Miles Standish Park. But mostly we spent our time exploring the lake by boat, on foot, and by bike. After dark, we'd take kayaks out, and shine lights directly into the water and watch the fish swimming under us. I rediscovered swimming in fresh water. My sister vistied us. She and her husband know a lot about mushrooms. While she was with us, she found an assortment of wild mushrooms which she said were among the choicest edible mushrooms to be found anywhere...... There is so much to do at Long Pond, but it's also just a lovely place to hang out and do very little.

Thank you very much for a wonderful experience and beautiful memories. It provided us a peaceful respite from the daily rigors of life in New York City. This was our escape from reality. The grounds, beach and waterfront are wonderfully set as is appropriate of its preservation. We saw our first humming bird in their natural habitat.
