Wapiti Cabin

Wapiti Cabin is a handsome Craftsman house of stone, shingle and rough-cut pine, set on a quiet cul-de-sac amid the wide open grassland of 3 Creek Ranch. Elegant and comfortable, Wapiti Cabin’s décor is based on the rich and subtle colors of a Jackson Hole autumn. Everywhere are deep couches, leather armchairs, polished wood, striking works of Western art; and in every room, tall mullioned windows embrace the glorious view. The front door opens to an art-filled foyer, which leads to the living room—a sunny, high-ceilinged space anchored by a wood-burning stone fireplace. Across the room, a flat-screen TV rises from a burnished sideboard. The dining room, kitchen and full bar occupy a single lofty, light-filled space. French doors open to a porch where the ample protection from rain and sun allow the outdoor grill to be used in any weather, at any time of year.

A wide, wood plank deck wraps halfway around Wapiti Cabin. The deck has no handrail to interrupt the transition from terrace to landscape—so the unfolding prospect of the grassy valley, emerald-green golf course and smooth pleated hills in the distance is natural and unimpeded. Upholstered wicker armchairs and ottomans provide ethereally restful seating—one group under the vaulted overhang of the porch, the other with no ceiling save the big blue sky. A stone firepit, ignited in an instant by a gas mechanism, makes a glowing focal point come nighttime, as the stars multiply a thousandfold overhead. At another corner of the deck, an illuminated stone hot tub can comfortably hold six. Just steps away is a pond favored by frogs, fish and the occasional elk, and fed by a clear, pebbly stream.

Wapiti Cabin’s master bedroom suite is on the ground floor, where doors open to the terrace, hot tub and the sweep of open land below the mountains. A pair of deep armchairs face the king-size bed, wall-to-wall carpeting is soft underfoot. A comfortable, wood-floored bathroom has a free-standing shower and a sink set in a counter of flaxen stone. A second half-bath, an office and a laundry room are just past the master suite.

Wapiti Cabin has two stairways that lead to separate upper floors; each floor has two bedrooms and a laundry center. The guest rooms are all hospitable and warm, with spreading views of Jackson Hole. One bedroom has a king-size bed and a private porch with chairs that face Munger Mountain; just down the hall is another guest room—with twin day beds, a writing desk, and a small TV—that can happily function as a nursery or second office. On the other side of Wapiti Cabin, a guest room with a queen bed has French doors that open to a small balcony under the eaves; in the bathroom a deep tub provides luxurious bubble therapy. The final guest bedroom has two colorful twin beds side by side, a built-in bookshelf stocked with children’s literature, and a long window seat for reading or daydreaming.

A covered bridge marks the entrance to the enclave of 3 Creek Ranch, and, true to its name, three creeks wind through the private neighborhood’s huge expanse, spanned by footbridges here and there. The famed 3 Creek golf course is truly beautiful and quite a challenge. And when winter comes, the whole wide valley becomes a wonderland for cross country skiing, snowshoeing and animal tracking, when the paths and pastimes of passing animals are inscribed in snow, nature’s secret diary laid open for all to read. Wapiti Cabin is a wonderful place to spend a week or a month, a home in the wilds of Wyoming, yet only minutes from town.
