Very quiet and private, post and beam cabin newly built by island craftsmen in secluded Polly Cove, within Carvers Cove on the north side of the island looking across the Fox Island Thoroughfare to North Haven past Widows Island and Goose Neck Rock Lighthouse.

The beach is wide and shallow, near the cabin, providing easy water access for kayaks, water dogs and children after a warm day when the tide comes in over the sand and gravel heated by the sun. A nine and a ten foot kayak are provided.

The cabin comprises a spacious open floor plan with a full kitchen, dining room table for eight, and a living room area with a wood burning stove and a fold-out couch that could sleep two young children. The loft above is sizable with a solid double bed, reading lights and sound system (radio, CD player, ipod and mp3 hookups).

One tent platform for aging children is two hundred feet from the cabin with a beautiful view across the cove toward Deer Isle. Another tent platform with a more dramatic view hangs over the cove.

Two sets of sliding glass doors provide spectacular views. From the wrap-around deck sit in the sun on the south side or on the north side watch the seals, blue heron, osprey and an occasional bald eagle dive in the cove next to a land preserve with hiking paths and a salt water marsh.

A composting toilet, solar heated showers and a hand pump for drawing water into the kitchen maintain a limited imprint on the land and its resources.

We had a wonderful time at Polly Cove. The cabin was well-appointed and having internet was a treat when the weather was bad. The solar shower and composting toilet satisfied our need to "rough it" since we decided on not camping for this year's vacation! I was thoroughly impressed with Vinalhaven's attempts at sustainability; the rest of us could learn something here. Everyone (our two dogs included!) loved hanging out on the deck, splashing on the beach, and exploring the island's trails. Although getting on and off the island does add to the logistical challenge of the vacation, it is well worth it to be on a gorgeous island with no neighbors around.

We had a LOVELY time at Polly Cove in July 2011. The cottage was just as described, and the cove itself was even better than we had expected. The location is amazing; we loved watching the boats going by in the Thorofare and also those anchoring up at night in the cove. And our two young boys enjoyed the tidepooling here as well. And kayaking. And bird watching. It was all great. We also hiked several of the Vinalhaven Land Trust sites. It is an easy drive to the downtown area to pick up lobsters and other necessities. The owner was very helpful in answering our questions and making our stay as trouble free as possible. We are hoping to return in 2012.

Owner response: How nice to see this and glad you were able to come back. Hope to see you again. George

Our family of four (kids ages 7 and 4) spent a week at this property in August 2011. What a delight! The owners met us at the property, answered questions, and helped us settle in. We felt free to contact them with any concern (although we never had too!). The cabin is just as described and Polly's Cove and the beach were beyond our expectation. We hiked and kayaked and searched for shells and crabs and sea treasures. We picked wild blackberries and blueberries and watched lobstermen check their traps from the kitchen window. We read lots of books and enjoyed the warmth of a fire in the wood stove. It is extremely quiet and secluded, but we were happy to occasionally check-in with the outside world via the wireless internet! Don't let the idea of using a composting toilet, hanging a solar-heated shower (water in a bag) from the rafter of the bath house, or pumping cold water by hand in the kitchen scare you... for us, those only added to the adventure of the experience! [FYI, you need to drive on dirt roads to get to this cottage... they were a little tough on our Prius, which has very low clearance.] Overall, we highly recommend this property... we all loved our week there and hope to return someday!

Owner response: Renee Warnick, Of course, we would love to have you and your family back in Polly Cove this summer and promise to smooth the drive in the spring with added gravel. :) George

My little dog and spent a few days at Polly's Cove last year. I am a naturalist, a college professor, researcher and writer and I fell in love with the beautifully crafted house and the surrounding area which is stunning in its beauty. My dog and I went beachcombing and bathing every day on the pristine beach. We are both walkers so having a nature reserve as one of the border properties offered us many paths to explore. I loved the place so much that Bridgee and I didn't take the car out once. We walked everywhere, and met friendly folks and explored our surroundings picking wildflowers along the way. I am delighted to be returning to Polly's Cove this summer for another stay.

My long review of Polly cove: I love to visit new places but Polly Cove is one spot I want to return to regularly. I could curl up in a chair on the deck for hours watching herons and seals and the passing sailboats. Or paddling around in a kayak getting a close-up of the island's beauty. Or trying to decide whether to watch sunset from the cove or atop Tiptoe Mountain. There are beautiful forests for hiking and a great quarry for swimming. The town of Vinalhaven is a picturesque lobster fishing village that has whatever you need for your stay but is small enough to get an ice cream cone and go for a stroll. My short review of Polly Cove: It's idyllic. Go there.

We stayed at Polly Cove during the summer of 2009. The luxury of coffee on the deck, evening paddling on wide and protected water, rock sculpting in the sunshine, and enjoying conversations with the eagles and osprey is something not to be forgotten. When it rained, we had a spacious and wood-heated haven with large windows to keep us in touch with the indoor-outdoor commune. The tent platform in the woods was a bonus for the young people...and when we were able to pull ourselves away from the waterfront, the trip to town was brief enough to be made each day as needed.
